I’ve been going camping quite a bit recently for various environmental classes, and I decided it was time to get my own tent after using friends’ for previous trips. I did some research, heard mostly good things about it, and decided to make the purchase. I just took it out for a weekend trip. It rained the whole time. My friend and I stayed dry all night. Even though it’s advertised as a three person tent, it’s definitely more reasonable to use it as a two person tent and have room for gear. The side pockets are super convenient, and the gear loft is perfect for holding your light source. Overall, I’m very happy with my purchase!
I have had this tent for 8 years and it has served me well. Too well. It has gone above and beyond the call of duty to the point that i'd rather repair mine. Not because I'm unwilling to purchase a new one at the drop of the hat. But because the tent and I have been through so much it feels like a family pet. I'm 6'6" and my fiance is 6'1" so we got this 3 person to feel more like a 2 person. It still fits us and our gear comfortably. All the details that more expensive tents have are there. From aluminum poles, to the bathtub design to keep water out to the footprint to help the tent last longer, to the vestibule, to two doors on opposite sides so you don't have to trip over your partner to use the bathroom at night. It's all there. This isn't some cheap Coleman tent. This is a fair priced yet resilient tent. You won't regret it. PS: The stakes are lousy but generic. I've replaced those over time and keep having to as I'm prone to the rocky mountainous regions that are hard on stakes I guess. I refuse to let that detract from the tent given that they are sub 50 cents at walmart.
Took the Mountainsmith for a quick over nighter. Just to try it out. First, the tent weight for ours was 7lb 13oz. So not light. We split it up between myself and my wife. The tent stakes are adequate. They can not handle the soil and rock around here. That's the bad. The good is this. This tent has a lot of room. PLENTY for the wife and I plus small dog. All of our gear fit inside as well. Something we are not used to. The included ground cover and vestibule are thick and sturdy! A plus for the rock and cactus we experience here. The tent itself breathes really well. Yes, there is condensation, but not as bad as I expected with the thickness of the vestibule. For the price, we like it. Probably wont take it on multi days. But for over nighters, it's great
I am still testing this tent out. I have only used it twice. So far so good. It is a little difficult to get a nice tight floor at first, but I found that stacking the tent down first before putting in the poles helped a lot. The foot print is smaller then the tent which is kind of wired IMO. It has a nice rain fly, I think this is going to be great in a down pour, which is why i got it. Its a bit big, but I took it backpacking, and it is surprisingly light for a 3 person tent at this price point. I do like that if it is nice out you can take the rain fly off and it has large mesh panels. So you feel like your really outside.
Most 3 man backpacking tents can’t hold 3–this one can. Huge interior. Super easy dome setup by 1 person. On the heavier side but split between 3 people is not bad. I use it car camping.
My scale indicates 8.2lbs, Description indicates this tent is best used for backpacking, in reality it is too heavy for backpacking and it might be better for camping
Bought this on sale and used it for a night in the woods by myself. good for 2 adults and real roomy for one person. easy set up and felt solid.
So far so good. Used once in benign conditions. Me, wife, and dog fit in the tent without issue, though dog was making a bit too much noise in her sleep. Otherwise, a good sturdy tent and awesome for the money.
After searching around and reading other reviews, a lot of other reviews, my wife and I decided on this tent for us and our youngest daughter to share. Not only did this tent perform awesome on its first trip out, it has me excited to get back on the ground after many years hanging in the hammock. Thoughtful and intuitive setup and design make this even better. Can’t wait to take this on many more trips. Hopefully the durability is as good as the initial experience.
Easiest and quickest to set up tent that I have ever owned - and I have owned everything from 2 person backpacking to 4 person car camping tents! Large and roomy. Light inside even with fly on. Large vestibules and so great to have two doors.
