Great Accessory for Securing Our Kayaks
These have made it so much easier to secure our kayaks. We are able to use then I nder the front hood as well as under the tail gate. We feel very confident driving at freeway speeds that our kayaks are secure.
great product & easy install
I bought this pair of anchors to tie down the kayak. We do not have a place to anchor a strap to the front of the vehicle. It’s very easy to attach a rope/strap to this and then place it under the hood.
Poor Value and Quality
For the price, these loop straps feel cheap and thin. However, let's assume that Yakima diligently performed its R&D and that the look and feel of these straps are misleading, and let's focus to my experience. First complaint: Loop strap material. The plastic-y rubber feel of the loop strap creates a friction that prevents you from pulling some types of rope through and tightening it against the loop strap. In such instances, tightening bow and stern lines requires you to pull down on one side of the rope tight with one hand and pull sideways or up (taking up all the slack) on the other side of the rope with the other hand. For the type of rope I used, I found this workaround to be more sufficient for dry rope than wet rope. It was difficult to pull up all the extra slack of the wet rope, which resulted in badly vibrating bow tie downs even after stopping to re-tie and tighten the lines. Luckily, I had some other straps on hand that use Nylon for the loop strap, so when I stopped a second time due to vibrating bow lines I removed the Yakima plastic-y rubber loop straps and replaced them with a nylon loop strap and was able to properly pull and tighten the bow tie downs without hassle. Second complaint: Length of securing "bar." At the end of the loop strap, the "bar" that goes under the hood or in the trunk is long. For my sedan, it barely fit between the edge of the trunk and the support bracket that slides up/out and down/in to raise and lower the trunk lid. By "barely fit," I mean that the loop strap's "bar" is pressed against both sides. How much wear will the Yakima loop strap's "bar" receive from the trunk lid raising and lowering? It will probably fair better than the fabric trunk lining it is forced against for the entire car ride. The other loop straps I had on hand have a shorter "bar" that fits better in the trunk of my sedan, so Yakima gets replaced for stern tie down points as well. I would give this 1.5 stars if I could, but 2 stars is probably fair because it's a little cheaper than the other (blue) brand with big name recognition and because it will work better with some materials than other. Both are overpriced for what they actually are, but this Yakima product proves to be less functional.
Great strap anchors
These worked great on my vehcle to ancor the bow of my canoe. In the past, I had just strapped down to the recovery points on my truck and the straps eventually worn marks in my paint. This keeps the straps off the paint and minimal contact with the hood.
