After trying 7 different boots, I have found what makes my feet happy. I have old, tired feet (67yr. olds) with multiple issues - one foot larger and wider - I've had surgery on each of my big toes (hallux rigiditis, i.e., arthritis) - my ankles tend to roll - all this contributes to the difficulty in finding a good/great boot. My podiatrist recommended a stiff boot for support and protection. I was concerned that this boot did not come in a Wide, but it fits comfortably. Construction is on a par with other similar boots (Asolo, for instance). So I am very pleased to have found them - online as none of our local store carried them. Happy feet !
This boot has everything I look for. Great traction on various trail surfaces, excellent lateral stability, a strong last, and bears heavy loads easily. Whether out for a 0ne hour walk on a sandy trail or five hours on granite, they never have failed me. I can stand in nearly ankle deep water and won't get a drop in. The large toe drop gives this boot a fluid rolling stride that reduces foot and leg fatigue that I really appreciate. The tough leather outer provides awesome protection. Ankle support is super. I am a perfectionist and a nit picker for details when it come to boots- and these check all the boxes.
I have been wearing Zamberlan boots for 20+ years, and they are the most consistently good footwear company in my opinion. These boots are awesome, but I made an initial mistake in sizing, and this review is to help others from making the same mistake. I wear a size 8 tennis shoe, an 8.5 Merrell MOAB (lightweight boot), and my feet are average in width. Initially I ordered a size 8.5, and replaced the original insoles with the ones in my Merrells (New Balance 1200 memory foam insoles - high volume). The boots seemed really comfortable at home, but once I hit the trail I realized my foot was too close to the top of the boot. I then tried a medium volume insole (Oboz O FIT Plus Medium Arch Insoles) and that configuration might have given me enough room, but it still seemed tight when my feet swelled, and I missed the cushioning of my other insoles. I then ordered a size 9, and am a lot happier because I can wear the high-volume insoles and still have enough room in the toe box and area below the laces. I needed the extra cushioning because I am an underpronator (I roll towards outside of foot). I would classify these boots as TRUE TO SIZE, with an average-sized toe box, but the full-grain leather does not flex like nylon and mesh, and this should be considered when choosing a size. In my case, I had to go up a half-size from my usual boot size. If you plan to replace the insoles, I would suggest sizing up. Your feet will thank you once they start to swell. Other notes on these boots: 1) They are comfortable but stiff out of the box, and it took about 10-15 miles to break in and forget they were on my feet. 2) The traction is not as good as lighter-weight boots, but this is a byproduct of the stiffer soles and harder rubber used in those soles. Both of those things are necessary in a boot like this, so I did not deduct a star. The traction is great on softer materials like dirt, gravel and mud, but when you're wearing a boot like this and you step on fist-sized rock, your foot will tilt in the direction that the laws of physics demand. If you are used to a softer sole that flexes more, this can be disconcerting at first, but it is no fault of the boot - that's how it's designed (to protect your feet). In terms of the hardness of the soles, I've had some slippage on larger wet rocks, and the ceramic tile floor of my kitchen when my boots were wet (do not walk on tile!). 3) They are waterproof - I wore them in a downpour and there was a river flowing from my rain pants onto the boots 4) The breathablity is better than expected, but this boot would get hot if worn in the summer. 5) The boot has a significant toe-drop, which I love. I have problems with the big toe on my right foot, and the top-drop minimizes the flex on this toe, and thus the pain. It's good for hallux limitus/rigidus and other arthritic conditions. In summary, these are great boots, especially for harsh and wet conditions, and I recommend sizing up. Finally, thank you to REI for your generous return policy, which afforded me the luxury of getting the right size. I returned the 8.5 but the size 9 will be my friend for the next decade.
hiked Zion and the Grand Canyon and it was like walking on pillows of air and the soles gave me a boost of confidence that on the rock scrambles going up and down, my footing and grip was secure!
I have hallux rigidus of the first MTP joint in both feet. These boots provide a stiff sole and a rock forward shape which is a heaven send for me. I tried trail runners, but the flex of those shoes about destroyed my arthritic joints. When I switched to these boots, the pain went away and kept me hiking a lot more miles than I otherwise would have been able to hike. These boots might be heavy, but for me it's equivalent to driving in a full suspension 4 wheel drive jeep on rocky terrain. Trail runners was equivalent to driving a Prius on that same rocky road.
I have very hard to fit feet. My foot is narrow and my heel is even narrower. I had a very old pair of leather hikers similar to this, that I purchased from REI probably 20 years ago. At year 17, on a hike, they bit the dust. I have looked for a good pair of leather boots since then and finally found these. I've worn them probably a dozen times now, on mild hikes, and love them. They are a good fit and at almost 63 years old, my feet don't get tire in these. They are really well made and this will probably be the last boots I'll ever have to buy.
I just did what no one would recommend. Went on a backpacking trip (admittedly short) with barely worn boots (5 miles tops, nearly all on streets and sidewalks with no pack.) But I was counting on my experience with my first pair of these boots from a decade+ ago and this 2nd pair of Zamberlans did not disappoint. Nary a hot spot, waded shallow creeks and stayed dry, didn’t slip much on snow patches, and the leather uppers stood up to the volcanic rocks of the Three Sisters Wilderness. Particularly good fit in the heel. Well worth the investment.
I'm going to focus on how amazing these boots are for someone with Hallux Rigidus (stiff, arthritic big toe joint). If you need a boot that does all the bending for you, look no further. They are comfy and supportive and they allow for miles of completely pain-free walking. I wish I could wear them everyday. I have custom orthotics on order to the tune of $350 so that my everyday shoes can hopefully be as user-friendly as these are right out of the box. They are soooo worth the money.
I had read about these books and went in to try them on. Our store didn’t have them on display but the very friendly shoe person told me she would check in back. Amazingly someone had turned in a pair. (She had tried on two and kept her size) they fit perfectly. I have hiked over 40 miles since I got them. My boots make hiking like walking on clouds with support for my ankles I never have felt before. Women should have the option of trying on these boots in all the stores!!
These are AMAZING....the most I have ever spent on any pair of shoes and worth every penny. I went into REI to get some winter hiking socks and stopped by the one off rack. These beauties were there at 20% off. I thought, oh, I will just try them on... nope..they went home with me....custom Italian Leather with amazing arch support. Perfect addition to my hiking boot collection.
