Fantastic Tent!

The REI Co-op Passage 2 tent is very well designed. I first set it up at home, and was immediately impressed that I could pitch on my own in about 3 minutes. It has color-coded tabs to match up the tent, footprint, and rain fly. There are also grooves in the plastic pieces at the ends of the poles that help them stay in place. And, clips make it easy to attach the rain fly. We are both tall, so I also measured the inside to be sure we would fit. For reference, the tape measure in the photo is set at 6’5” (the yellow part). We then loaded up our packs and headed up to the White Mountains (New Hampshire) to test out our new tent. Once we are all set up and settled inside, we found that we fit inside quite comfortably. We both took advantage of the handy pockets on the side walls of the tent. We also used the pockets in the roof of the tent and the loop to hang our small lantern. Another nice feature is that the doors open from either side—making it easy to reach in and access items at the head or foot without letting bugs in. I highly recommend this tent!

Great with an Integral Flaw

My girlfriend and I have been using this tent while cycling across the US. After having used it over a few months the zippers began to malfunction. The sliders constantly became stuck and some areas of the track would remain unzipped after the slider passed over allowing for the whole zipper to become easily undone. When passing through Dallas we exchanged the tent for a new one, but in just a few short weeks we experienced the same problem. A number of teeth on the zipper have become mangled as the slider passes over and will no longer zip shut. The slider snags in these areas and it requires considerable effort to continue zipping. Often moving the slider over these areas leaves a large unzipped area and requires the slider be moved back and forth, snagging the whole way, several times until only a small unzipped area remains. As we continue to use the tent more and more problem areas creep up. Other than that we both really like this tent. Unfortunately we will need to go with a different tent when the doorways become completely unusable.

Product is amazing. Easy to assemble, light tent and very accessible in and out big door on each side of the tent. In the inside, the tent has a lot of pockets where you can put your essential stuff (lights, knife, watch). Love this tent.

Excellent quality on a student budget

I took this tent on a two-week car camping field trip through Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas in the dead of summer. It was fast to set up in buggy areas, durable on high-wind beaches (~17mph), and provided lots of ventilation in high temperatures (90°F+ at night). This tent was my only option on a graduate student budget, but the good reviews were very encouraging and I was not disappointed once the tent was in action. It fit myself and my gear perfectly. The loops and pockets within the tent were very helpful, and I like how the entire ceiling is mesh so you can see the sky at night. The tent made it though the trip with no issues and I am looking forward to using it again.

Awesome Quality and Value

I have the older green version and love it! It has been camping in Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama during fall, winter, and spring (and even early summer one year) on all kinds of terrain from state campgrounds to national forests to backcountry cattle pastures. I bought it as my all-purpose camping tent for both campground camping and horsepacking. The full-coverage rainfly offers enough privacy for crowded-to-capacity camp grounds on holiday weekends, extra warmth for December and January camping, but also has enough ventilation when the fly and/or doors are open for afternoon naps on hot summer days. It sets up really quickly (under 5 minutes, even when I put the tarp the wrong way and have to shift it). It holds up well to rain (although it hasn't seen anything more than a shower or two in well-drained areas). I find that the tent has enough features to keep me happy, but not so many that I'm concerned about stuff breaking or tearing. There are conveniently-located pockets for stashing my glasses at night so I can find them (and not crush them). The overhead gear stash is perfect for holding my headlamp while I'm putzing around in my tent and want more generalized lighting. The gear loft is also sturdy enough and high enough to hold up sweaty clothes and breeches that need to dry out over night without hitting me while I'm sleeping. The vestibules are plenty big enough to keep my boots and saddle bags dry and out of sight. My saddle does fit in the vestibule, but it's not a great option if it is going to rain. The tent itself is very spacious for one person, even when I have my saddle, saddle pad, and all my other tack and gear in the tent with me. I can sit up and kneel in the tent and don't have any problems getting dressed (even getting into and out of full seat breeches!). Full disclosure, I'm only 5' tall. The tent comes with a generous storage sack (and separate ones for the poles and stakes). The tent does compress down really well: I bought two 5L compression sacks for when I'm packing out; the tent goes in one, the fly goes in the other, and the tarp goes in whichever has more room. The compress down very small and both fit in one saddlebag. I love this tent and highly recommend it.

Sublime Design affordable too!

Purchased a Passage 2 about four years ago and have probably spent over two months of nights in it on extended canoe trips, backpacking, music festivals and travel and camping excursions. At one state park I awoke to find the Passage was literally in two inches of water due to poor campground drainage inside I was totally dry. I removed the stakes picked it up and moved the tent to higher ground and went back to sleep, and this with the "factory" seam sealing. Sets up oh so quick you'll be cooking supper while other's are fumbling with their fancy gear. The netting top is a thing, watch Orion travel across the heavens on clear nights. Cozy for two but the double doors prevent the scrum of climbing over your partner during a late night bathroom break. For one person its a luxurious suite. Its rated three seasons I've withstood some pretty squirrely storms and moderate snow, if you're serious about staking it out you can get it nice and taught. Ample and well thought interior pockets for your all your necessaries. Purchased the Footprint and hope it continues to extend the life of the floor packs quite small too. I'm sure there's lighter and pricier options, for me this has been a faithful and dependable piece of gear.

Great Beginner Tent

Great tent!! Holds up well in the pouring rain. No leakage. Fairly lightweight and extremely durable. This was my first REI tent and I'm very impressed. Very easy to set up.. takes two minutes. Lots of internal gear storage and a gear "attic" which is very convenient.

Lightweight and easy to set up

Initially I thought this would be perfect for the backpacking trip I'll be taking with my father later this summer. It's lightweight and easy to set up, plus it seems to retain heat rather well overnight (especially if you close it up while it's still warm outside). But after trying it out I think it's just a bit too small for father-daughter quarters. It would be perfect for a couple- two average sized or small people that are comfortable sleeping right next to each other. Two tall people could make it work if you really don't feel the need to put anything inside the tent other than sleeping bags and bodies. The tent floor is rectangular, with a nearly-complete-circle zipper door on each long side of the tent so that each camper can enter and exit without having to crawl over the other, and each door also has two zippers so that you can open the whole door to get in or out or just open part of the door from either the top or bottom of the arc to allow for airflow. You can also open the whole flap and just lift it up to rest the flap on the roof of the tent. The fly pulls out a bit more dome-like on the long sides, which is great for leaving things like shoes outside the tent but still covered (in case of rain). When you get out of the tent you can unzip the door on your side, put on your dry shoes, unzip the fly and get out of the tent. The first night of my trip I test-drove this tent with some car-camping (hate to get all the way out in the backcountry and discover a problem, especially since my two fairly large dogs were joining me) but I was very comfortable and satisfied with this tent. Although it was quite cool outside (I believe it got down into the 30's), the tent retained enough heat that I didn't realize how cool it was until I got up at 5 am to let the dogs out. After exiting the tent I closed the flaps of the tent and fly, and so when I got back in the tent a few minutes later it was still quite warm inside. But I also suspect that the body of heat of one human and two large dogs contributed. Had I slept in the tent alone I think I might find it a bit cooler in the morning. Pockets in the roof are also convenient for storing a few items. Two larger rectangular pockets are big enough to store bear spray and/or an e-reader, maybe a few other small and light items. The two smaller pockets are a bit oddly shaped, but could also hold a few small items (I put my car keys in there the night we car camped). Since I was the only human in the tent, I just brought my battery operated lantern into the tent for light. But two people in the tent isn't likely to leave enough room for a lantern. I think there was a little fabric loop on the ceiling, so you could maybe clip a carabiner or something similar to it and hang a very lightweight lamp from it. Or perhaps a lightweight latern/lamp that doesn't get very hot could be placed in one of the pockets. Overall I was really pleased with this tent. It's easy to set up and take down, fits nicely in the stuff sack that comes with it (the footprint fits in it as well) and it easily slides into my backpack. I can't wait to get to use it again!

Excellent budget-friendly tent

Purchased the tent after doing extensive research on backpacking tents for a bike-packing trip. The Passage 2 came up consistently as a budget-friendly, relatively lightweight (less than 5lbs) option. Color-coded tabs means you have the tent pitched in less time - important when you get to your campsite and it's raining despite all forecasts. The walls aren't vertical but it still feels spacious inside - space for you and all your gear on solo trips; space for you and your plus one and some of your gear for duo trips. The mesh pockets on the side won't hold much but there is a mesh "shelf" at the top that is handy for a headlamp - or use the small fabric loop to hang a small light. I particularly like the two doors and vestibules - each person has the space they need. I have not noticed any leakage during rain. The tent is a breeze to pack up and be on your way quickly. Definitely recommend this tent!

2 or 1 person great option

I've used this tent about 8 short trips with just myself and daughter with great results and ease of use. Having a free standing tent that was quick and easy to put up by myself was important as well as weight for a 2 person, and so far this tent has exceeded my expectations. It's not the lightest, but for the great price, especially if on-sale, the quality and details are just right. Nice inside pockets and hanging loops for lights and other items. I've been out in very gusty and freezing temps in N. GA mountains with good protection and stayed fairly comfortable inside. We've not been out in the heat yet, so warm weather ventilation is to be determined. Had to very rainy outings and stayed nice and dry and had to pack up wet with not too much retained water in pack. Very happy so far!
