If you are new / newish to using trekking poles!

I am a middle aged (OMG I just wrote that..... ! Nope I'm a young at heart and head person trapped in a 62 year old body) moderately overweight (Used to be obese still working on SLOWLY getting fit and kicking away the damaging extra pounds). I used to use my poles only in winter for snow shoeing. Took off the baskets to use in warm month hiking. Never even knew rubber tips were available til a friend showed me hers. So I got these..... what an amazing difference! No reverberating shock waves on hard surfaces, no more tips skidding if I strike a large rock at the wrong angle. No more metal on rock noise. Been using them for a total of 9 months now and can hardly see any wear and tear... they fit as snugly now as they did when I first got them. In the remote chance you are reading this as you decide whether to even use trekking poles..... don't hesitate.... Using trekking poles gives you greater stability in rugged terrain, and you use the strength of your arms to help you move.... giving you opportunity to strengthen your arms as you work your legs, heart and lungs.

Too loose!
Lori
I purchased these tips specifically for my Black Diamond trekking poles and they were very loose. Even though I tried to add material inside the tips to make them more snug, one tip fell off within the first mile of use and I never found it. Uugh! So bummed!!! Really needed these trekking over granite rock in the Sierras

Simple, Easy, Functional and Virtuous, Too!

Pretty simple concept - friction slip over the carbide pole tips to protect them (and the walked-on surface). Used them so far on a combined paved/natural path hike and they worked just fine. The tips were OK in the woodsy part and great on the paved. You *could* pop them off as the surface changes, but I suspect they might become looser over time coming on-and-off. I'll leave them on a while for use in my county park system trails. I got them to protect MY tips on paved trails; since then, I've learned others like them for protecting rocks and other natural surfaces from carbide-tip marring on popular trails - as another component of "leave no trace."

Nice to have but I keep losing them

I like these protectors very much when they stay on. Unfortunately I keep losing them. At first, they lasted me tens of hikes but one developed a hole and the other one eventually fell off. The replacements though keep getting stuck into the ground and getting lost on almost every hike. At least for the last 3 hikes I lost both tips on each hike! This is not sustainable at this price. How much profit does BD and REI make off of these? Do they really cost $10? Could it be made cheaper or tighter around the pole tip? or maybe add some sort of ribbed structure inside these protector tips AND on the pole tips so that it would take more force to remove them?

Came off on first hike

When they were attached they were great. Went out on first hike with them and the hike had some muddy spots. When using the poles through the muddy areas had no issues pulling the poles in and out of the mud as it wasn’t even 2” deep but then noticed just after the mud section that the little suction the mud must have had pulled the covers right off. Didn’t feel any extra force or anything during that section and yes before we started the hike confirmed that they were screwed on tightly. Great concept but poor execution. If you are on a hike that is all rock with no sections of mud to traverse through then these would likely work out fine.

One of the tips fell off on the second campout.

One of the tips fell off on the second campout. So the tip did not even make it 30 miles. I can not say enough how unhappy I am with the black diamond company. First of all, the trekking poles did not come with the tips but instead came with a snow basket. I will never, ever, ever need a snow basket. However, I do need the plastic tips. These tips are made by black diamond for their own trekking poles and it still came off. Outrageously expensive for two pieces of plastic and they still came off. I now have two expensive poles and one expensive tip. REI, please stop selling the black diamond brand.

Reasonably durable for rubber tips on asphalt

I’ve got around 230 miles of brisk Nordic-style walking over course asphalt road surface on these tips and the bottom pads are about to wear a hole in them. The only issue I’ve had is that the sidewall develops hairline cracks around the top openings. A couple wraps of electrical tape seems to have resolved any further cracking. Rotate the tip for an even wear pattern as you use them. The sidewall cracking brings the rating down to a 3 of 5. Otherwise, these seem to be reasonably durable for rubber tips on asphalt.

Not Quite as Advertised

I have a very old pair of BD twist lock ski poles I have repurposed into trekking poles. In addition, my wife and I have two sets of BD Flicklock ski poles that we occasionally change out the baskets and use as trekking poles. I was hoping these tip protectors would fit one are all of the older poles because the product description states: "works on all Black Diamond trekking poles except the First Strike and Distance Series Z-Poles". They didnt fit any of these older BD poles. Fortunately, the tip protectors did fit on my set of dedicated trekking poles, the BD Trail Cork Flicklocks, so all was not lost. Buyer beware.

Pretty Simple, Really

The concept and execution of this product is pretty simple - press-on rubber tips to protect the carbide tip of your poles when on pavement or rock, or you're on surfaces that you don't want to scratch up ("leave no trace" philosophy). They work fine, and fit tight. I imagine, over time, the tips will wear larger and no longer fit as snug from repeated install/remove cycles, but I'm not worried about that now. I notice, beneficially, when on rock or pavement, the poles also won't skitter across the surface as readily while these tips are in place, which (skittering) could be a concern.
