Full disclosure we just got the rack today and haven’t taken it out driving yet. However, we bought this rack because it said it could fit a wide variety of bikes including kids bikes, but I couldn’t find many reviews about how well kids bikes actually fit. It’s not a perfect fit by any means but we were able to secure my sons 16” bike. However we could only use one of the wheel clamps. In the attached photo we have the clamps lowered as far as possible, and we cannot move the wheel trays further to the left/centered. I hope this helps others.
I was looking at the 4 bike Kuat but I just found that it stuck out from the back of my car way too much in addition to being more expensive than the Saris. The Saris is solid and well built. Securing a bike is way easier and faster than my old Yamika hitch mount. Folded up, its very compact and does not stick out that much compared to competitors.
The assembly wasn't that bad. My 12 year old daughter did most of it. However, that same 12 year old daughter broke the wheel tray. I loaded the bikes, but had her zip all of the tires to the tray (small hands and limber back to get in the tight spaces). As she was pulling the ratchet strap through, the front of the bike fell to the ground. As you can imagine, she looked at me horrified as if to say, "I didn't do anything wrong, I promise!". I was watching the whole thing, so I can attest to the fact that she wasn't doing anything wrong. After seeing how that bike dropped to the ground, I was happy that it didn't happen on the interstate, but disappointed at how flawed the system is. I don't think such and otherwise sturdy rack should have such a critical part made from plastic. I have a claim into Saris. I have not heard back from them. We'll see how they handle it. I am inclined to return it to REI - at least I know they will stand behind their product. I received this on April 10th, 2020. I think it shouldn't be a problem to return.
So happy we splurged on this rack. We had a thule hanging rack before and this is well worth the money. Easy to install (although watched a YouTube video bc instructions were terse) and so easy to use. Bikes super stable (so much better to have them sitting on a platform than hanging.) Easy to mount, four fit easily, and are very secure. High quality parts and worth the money. Will have this for a long time!
Having been a Yakima fan for 20+ years, we were disappointed with the extension to the 2 bike rack and the top bar rack. The Saris 4 bike hitch rack is AWESOMe. Not only does it hold 4 bikes easily and securely, it fits into the hitch receiver snuggly
We used this bike rack on a trip out of town and someone cut the locks and stole one of our bikes, so beware. I also tried to contact Saris since their website says this has a lifetime guarantee, and heard nothing. I would even be willing to pay to get the locks fixed, but still haven't heard anything from them and this was over 7 months ago. Also, like the other reviews have said, it is difficult to get 4 bikes on this rack if they are similar in size. It is nice that it folds easily and was not too difficult to assemble. For the price, I feel like the company should stand behind their products.
We have this rack for two years now, and it served us very well on quite a few trips in California mountains and on the shore. Any type of a bike fit, very easy to load ( I have a sensitive back yet never pulled a muscle doing it), 4 bikes take less than 10 min to put on the rack. Everything is sturdy and feels in the right place once on the road. Recently my husband has damaged the main bolt while taking the rack off, so we had to cut it off. That was the reason to contact customer service - two gentlemen on the phone were amazing helpful, knowledgeable, suggested a few tips for the future, and it's a pleasure to hear that they really care about their product. I am so happy we bought our second Saris rack, quality really matters.
It broke within a week, letting a bike fall to the road and get mangled. REI replaced it, and it happened again even after I added zip ties as added support for the plastic wheel holders. This is a piece of junk.
There are so many great racks these days it was a tough choice. Here's some pros and cons from me having just installed and loaded this for the first time. * EXCELLENT: Easy to install. Unlike an IKEA bookshelf this unit is mostly pre-assembled. Only 5 bolts were used. For some vehicle hitches a socket wrench is likely a better choice than a crescent wrench (which is what the instructions suggest). Written instructions and diagrams were excellent. * EXCELLENT: Bikes seem very well secured, with tire-only contact. * GOOD: Looks nice. There are other racks that look more cool or high tech, but this thing looks polished enough, and much better looking than my previous rust bucket rack * GOOD: Integrated locking system. It is so well integrated that at first I thought I was missing something "wait, wasn't this supposed to have some kind of locking feature?" I found the cables after a moment and found them easy to use. I would prefer it if they were a little longer and tougher looking (more visual deterrent to someone thinking about using bolt cutters). Also, I wish they were partially retractable for times you don't need the full length... making it harder to get a good angle with a grinder or cutter. GOOD: Isolating bikes from each other. Make no mistake it will always be a jigsaw puzzle fitting 4 full size bikes in such a small space (and to be fair I have only loaded two so far), but with the offset positioning of the wheel trays, etc. I am feeling good about my chances. Also, once the bikes are clamped, they can't really move at all so I don't expect to see unexpected contact from swaying, etc. * MEH: Plastic wheel trays and straps feel vulnerable to breaking. I am trying to take it easy on them after reading of others accidentally breaking them. * MEH: Easier to load than my last rack, but not as fluid to load as an upright system like Velocirax, Alta, Recon, etc. You need a strong and long-limbed adult to lift each bike up and into place before securing. Since you are trying to hold the bike horizontally in the air and control both wheel positions at the same time, it feels more physically challenging than just hoisting a front wheel into a basket Velocirax style. * MEH: The rectangular tubing shaft which goes into the receiver hitch didn't fit tightly in my receiver, allowing for some wiggle with other the poor hitch bolt to handle potential swaying/twisting loads. I think I will add one of those tightener accessories to lock down the interface more Once I have more experience with it I will update with any major new pros or cons.
Have owned this bike rack for 6 mos and very pleased with it. Load mostly all mountain bikes without issues once you figure out ideal loading order of your various bike sizes. My only gripe is the clunky threaded metal piece or bracket that goes inside the of the rack arm that enters the hitch on my vehicle. Have to carefully place and slide in so that thread stays aligned to where bolt goes in, otherwise you have fish for it and pull it out again, reset it and try again. This could have easily been resolved by making a better fitting threaded bracket instead of having to fish for it if not aligned perfectly. Otherwise as stated before, very pleased with the overall quality and steadiness. Haves used the locks as well. No issues. Would definitely recommend and would buy again especially since I am able to put on and take off fairly easily due to manageable weight of the rack which is below 80# compared to competitors.
