Buy a heftier lock
I had such high hopes for this lock that were quickly shattered. I was impressed by how lightweight it was and had heard such good things about Kryptonite's locks I decided a 6/10 security rating would be enough for me, and it wasn't worth buying a more expensive (and heavier) lock for my purposes. First, I did have some issues with the key and locking mechanism getting stuck. Then about two weeks after purchasing someone came along with a pair of bolt cutters and stole my bike. I'm currently still trying to see if I can qualify for Kryptonite's anti-theft protection offer (which is great, I will admit), but the time restraints on both registering and reporting are making it look like I won't be eligible. It might be an investment, but save yourself the cost of having to buy a new bike and invest in a better lock!
The standard
had a few of these in my lifetime, only reason they've ever been replaced is lost keys. I see a lot of people saying they jam, they don't; in 7 years of proper daily use I have never had a jam. Now, this lock uses a disk detainer type lock, pretty much any lock of this type will jam if you turn it without the key fully inserted. It even says this on the packaging. So I dont know why people are having this issue. 90% of the real cyclists I know use this lock, don't listen to weekend warriors that can't follow simple instructions.
Ruined my vacation
Bought this lock brand new right before leaving for my beach vacation. Set the lock with the provided instructions and used it without issue for times. The fifth time it jammed. It jammed with my bike attached to a bike rack in a town I've never been to. I have to get to a ferry to get home from where I am and I don't know if I'm going to make it because I'm stick waiting here for someone who can help me remove this post and free my bicycle. This is one of the worst experiences of my life and I've never experienced so much anger. This product is garbage and no one should buy it.
I hate, hate HATE this terrible lock
I bought one from a local bike store few months ago and I hate it so much I can't tell you. The lock jams ALL the time. Again this morning. It's so frustrating to spend 5 minutes turning key this way and that until it finally decides to let you lock or unlock it. I finally gave up on it even though it cost $50. And am about to buy an Abus on this site. I have another Abus for my ebike, and it's fantastic. But pricey. Now I know why. You get what you frustrating. I will never buy another Kryptonite lock again. So terrible!
Just ok
The inner locking mechanism shifts sometimes and I can’t unlock it. I’ve had it for a month and it’s happened three times.
feel secure leaving bike out in public
this is a great lock. i own a previous version with a longer loop and was initially concerned the new one would be limiting. so far i haven't encountered bad situations probably because the city has installed more bike locking stations (e-bikes everywhere). the sliding cover for the keyhole is welcome to keep out rain. my only gripe is the bike lock mounting apparatus. instructions say to use torque wrench to tighten bolt onto frame to mount. it's hard to find a 3mm allen key that will mate in line with my wrench. ugh!
Good!
Good enough insurance coverage, easy to mount on the frame. Very satisfied.
Lost key. Very expensive! No more Krytonite for me
The lock works fine, it's strong, easy to use. So far my bicycle was not stolen. I agree with other reviewers that it might fall off if if caught in pants during riding. I lost one key and I don't want to use it in case I loose the second key and I am stuck. Replacement cost is $12 for one key. $20 for two keys. $25 for three keys. A lower strength Kryptolok at Walmart is $19 with two keys included. Replacement keys should be in the $5 to $9 each. Needless to say that I will throw away this Kryptolok and find more user friendly manufacturer. I still have a sour taste about spending almost $1000 for two lost fobs in my cars. Sorry Kryptonite, you lost a customer for your outrageous key replacement costs. I cannot get blank keys to cut myself.
Decent urban lock
I have used this u-lock on my commuter for about 10 years. Of all the u-locks that come with a mount for carrying while riding, this mount is the best one I have found. It takes some effort to attach it to the bike so it stays secure without twisting or moving but once installed, it's solid and lasts for years. The lock itself is adequate to prevent urban "smash and grab" theft. Locking up in busy, visible areas still applies. U-locks are vulnerable to cutting and this one is no different. This isn't the solution if you leave your bike out overnight. Otherwise, it's small enough to fit in a frame triangle, lightweight, and a quick solution to lock up on frequent stops. I run errands and make several stops before/after work so the lock cycles 6-10 times each day. I haven't had any issue with the lock mechanism. You do have to sometimes have to wiggle the key back and forth a little to get all the disc layers to line up when inserting the key, but it isn't a problem nor does it compromise reliability. With lots of use, the lock mechanism wears out and becomes difficult to turn. I get about 2.5 years of daily use out of these before I replace it. TLDR: This lock is reliable, includes the best on-bike carrier I've found and, for me, is the best combo of size, weight, ease of use, and provides a reasonable level of security for high visibility, modest risk lock-ups at a reasonable price point.
Mount broke within 5 weeks of moderate usage
Great lock, but the mount is extremely poorly designed
