After reading a description of this product, I was sure it was what I needed . However, when I received it I was disappointed. I am 5'10", 172#, pretty close to average American male. I have always bought a size large. To my surprise, the shoulders on this vest are four inches narrower than my Patagonia down vest. The small elastic arm holes ride on the top of my shoulder and well up my armpit. Raising my arms causes a lump to rise on my chest. The collar is also strange. It is a tight turtleneck, an inch taller than my other Patagonia gear. I am average height, and it is uncomfortable fully up. I love the material and the finish, but I am not sure I can wear this.
I love the materials and Forge gray semi-translucent color of this vest. I plan to use this for summer backpacking in warmer weather, and love how it is so light and compressible. I also take it to work with me - just to be prepared for changes in the weather. The only real problem with the vest was discerning what would be the best size. The Patagonia website says the Micro Puff is a "Regular Fit," and the REI size chart for this item says I would fit a large too. Couldn't test the size because the REI Berkeley store currently does not stock this item (in any color). Basically, I did did not know it was a slim fit. Really slim. I am 6'2" 193lbs with broad shoulders and 34" waist. In the past, when it comes to jackets and vests, I usually fit a Patagonia large. (I own a Patagonia size large 2016 Nano Puff Vest, and a size large 2015 Down Vest.) I almost fit a Large Micro Puff vest, if I was only wearing a thin baselayer underneath - but it is tight. Since I usually wear something more and don't wear clothes so tightly, I opted for a xtra-large. Techs at REI helped me re-order it at the Customer Service desk. The REI tech I spoke with actually knew that these ran slim.
The only complaint I have about this Vest is that they run a little big.
