This jacket is really light weight. That was my impression from the moment I put it on for the first time and that impression really stuck with me. You can almost forget you're wearing it. It's noticeably lighter than comparable down-filled puff jackets. On the flip side, it doesn't pack as small, so the Micro Puff will take up about 30% more volume in your pack than a down one...but at these weights and pack sizes that wasn't a big factor for me. Despite the light weight and thin material, Micro Puff provides plenty of insulation. I've tested it in a variety of conditions, from wearing it around the city as an outer layer during a Nor'easter to ski tours in New England to wind blasted summit chair at Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondacks. As an outer layer it fared much better than its deceiving fragile looks would suggest. While the thermal insulation it provides is similar to other comparable products, Micro Puff blocked wind much better than I expected. Wind blocking performance makes it much more versatile and more useful, especially as an emergency/always in the pack layer. It is very comfortable for travel too and I found myself leaving it on unzipped over just a base layer for the car ride. When making food and gas stops, I would just zip the jacket up and getting out of the car mid-drive wasn't that bad any more. As a mid layer it worked well in a combination with a Goretex shell. On a couple of occasions I was overheating a bit (hiking up a boot pack) but the Micro Puff was breathing well, and despite my intense sweating, the inside of the jacket stayed completely dry - there was non of that gross, wet-down feeling. My only gripe with Micro Puff is the fit. I'm a 6'1", 210 lbs athletic built and I usually wear size Large. While the overall fit of the jacket matches what I would expect from a size Large, there are a few things I didn't like about it. The collar is very close to neck and fairly tall. When zipped up all the way, collar is too tight to fit the chin inside of it...and at the same time, it's tall enough to poke you in the under-chin. I wish the collar was either a bit shorter or a bit roomier. Also, while the fit in the torso is pretty roomy, sleeves are fairly tight/skinny. They are not too tight for when there's only a base layer or a shirt under the jacket, but add another thin mid layer, and the sleeves start feeling a bit restrictive to hand movements. Meanwhile, in the torso area, I could easily fit a full weight fleece or two under the jacket. This only makes things a bit confusing when trying to figure out how to layer it on those really cold days, but won't be a problem in most cases. To sum it up: overall, it's a very good, versatile, comfortable, light weight and windproof jacket. On the flip side, I wish the fit was a bit better, especially in the collar area.

I really wanted to love this jacket, but I'm returning it because of the fit. Any attempt to zip this thing all the way and I'm uncomfortable (even with just a shirt), especially when I sit down. I have a pretty thick neck but I haven't had this problem before. Not with the nano puff, down sweater, ultralight down, R1 etc. Even my MH ghost whisperer vest has more than adequate neck space. And if I can't zip it all the way and be comfortable, then I can't use it as a technical piece. Besides that, it looks awesome and it's very warm for its weight. I'd say to try this on before you make the buy - doesn't fit like the rest. Hopefully in future seasons they will make an update. If they do, I would most def re-buy.

Initial Impressions

I cannot speak to the Micro Puff's durability as I have only had mine for less than a day, but I can say that I like it so far. I am 6', 217 lbs, with a 44" chest, 35" waist, and 17" neck. I bought my jacket in size XL and it fits me perfectly. It is lightweight and packs up nice and small. Since my Micro Puff will be reserved for backpacking and travel, I am not too worried about reports of its fragility. I have been looking for a lightweight, packable puffy for my layering system; I think I found it.

The jacket that sells itself

Once upon a time I was on a three week business trip and in the first week, second city, my jacket was stolen. I have at least five replacements (at home) out of reach and headed to the wintery east coast for ten days. The logical choice is to go with what you know works. So off I go to REI, poked around but I knew I wanted something compact for travel. This jacket was the third one I tried on, I proceeded to wear it as I looked around some more and then to the counter for purchase. I slept in it that night. A week later I bought 5 for my sister and her family. I looked like a hero, and we all lived happily ever after.

Solid. Best one I could find.

I opted for this version over down to keep the insulation when wet or sweaty. I'm amazed at the warmth to weight ratio. It is so light that it feels like it would only be warm under a shell. To the contrary, it's plenty warm for windy and drizzly Seattle winters, and I actually have to take it off if I spend more than 10 minutes in a grocery store, etc. I haven't tested its mettle in an alpine environment yet, but I have no doubts that it will hold up well. Despite claims to the contrary by other companies, this is the first jacket I've had that actually doesn't impede range of motion. The zipper baffle is a nice touch.

Warm for the weight

Jacket fits well with some extra room in the torso. Very comfortable and light. It’s pretty warm when stationary, but once you get moving that’s when it really retains heat I’ve brushed up a few freshly cut bushes and no nicks or tears, durability is good.

Fragile stitching conundrum

To test this jacket before a trip, I spent two weeks in late winter wearing this jacket to and from my office job. It took that short amount of time and extremely gentle use for the jacket to have stitching come undone, which led to insulation leaking out. I can’t imagine this jacket lasting long when it’s used and abused for its intended purpose. Inexcusably poor quality given the high price.

Not quite normal Patagonia durability

I gave this four stars because it is unbelievably light weight which makes it perfect from Fall to Spring regardless of the temperature. The jacket is great and now my favorite of the many I have as it doesn’t feel bulky and it’s one of the few jackets I have owned that I’ll gladly leave on when driving though normally the restriction warm jackets generally have can make it frustration. My main complaint is that I haven’t had the jacket for two months and am not out trudging through brush or climbing in fix holes but the stitching is coming out one at a time. About every four days or so I see a loose thread when passing by a mirror and gently snip it off only to see another one soon in a different spot. I definitely don’t think I will get three years out of this which is a shame because nearly every other Patagonia jacket I have owned has stood the test of time. Great look, very comfortable and light but quality in the manufacturing is lacking which stings a bit for $250.

Successor to the Nano Puff?

Bottom line up front: I like the Micro Puff (MP) but prefer the Nano Puff (NP). The MP (8.3 oz) is noticeably lighter than the NP (11.9 oz). That makes it my preferred jacket for backpacking and any other sort of travel where weight matters. Despite being lighter, I'd say the warmth of the MP is nearly identical to that of the NP (nice!). However, I prefer the comfort and looks of the NP. The MP material reminds me of trash bag plastic (not as bad as it sounds though haha) and is also "louder" when the material rubs together. I can't speak to the durability as I've only had it a few days, but I suspect my NP will last longer. The MP material is very thin, but that's the trade-off for shedding those extra few ounces. I'm 5' 6", 162lbs, athletic build; the small fit me well. Compared to the NP small, the MP has slightly more room around the chest and slightly less room in the arms (always kinda thought the NP arms were a bit poofy). I prefer the MP small because it fits my build well; your mileage may vary. I wore this with a t-shirt in 50 degree F weather and was comfortable. I would need a bit more layering if it went into the 40s. But then again I also have slightly below average tolerance for cold weather. At the end of the day, I prefer the NP for its lower price tag ($200 vs. $250) and more applicability towards everyday use (better comfort and looks). But if you're a dedicated light backpacker/traveler who wants to minimize every ounce, you won't be disappointed with the MP.

Unbelievably light, and warm

I was amazed at the lightness of the Micro Puff when I took it out of its shipping bag. Too light to be warm, in even cool weather, I guessed. This synthetic material will never be as warm as down! Well, I wore the jacket today. With gusty winds dropping the wind-chill factor to 32-degrees, I walked briskly in an overgrown cranberry bog on Cape Cod, with my two dogs, waiting for the cold to seep in to my cocoon; two cotton shirts underneath the too-light-to-believe environmentally correct impostor jacket I was wearing. Warm, warm, warm. Delighted I made the purchase. And, will add so little weight to my hiking forays in the future. Yes, the upstanding collar can be a bit irritating since it won't lie down flat. I was happy to have this stand-up feature protecting my neck on a blustery day, wearing a collarless shirt.
