I found there is simple way of addressing the zipper. Just mash the ends of the upper and lower zippers together with your left hand ( making them both go as low as they can go). It helps if you turn the edge of the jacket so you looking at them from behind. When you are looking at them from behind the two shapes fit together symmetrically when they are aligned. There is a way to hold them in place with one hand (by basically using your left thumb to push them downward and hold them there). Then use your right hand to feed the teeth through. I had a lot of trouble at first with the zipper but now it’s a cinch.
You can spend a lot more on an arctic-type coat like this but I doubt you will beat the quality and value for the money, although this coat isn't cheap. Lots of pockets in the right place. The shell is waterproof and breathable. The cut is really nice and long enough but not too long. Roomy in the arms and shoulders wearing a sweater under. Alas, the zipper is reversed which is somewhat annoying but not a deal-breaker by any stretch. Contrary to other comments, I find the sizing to be just right for this type of coat. The XL is generous without being too big, at 230 lbs and 6'2". Made in China but you'd never know it...I thought Finland by looking at it and wearing it. Two thumbs up.
Last week, I ordered the Autumn Leaf color, size L and received it today and just wanted to alert people who are considering purchasing this color. It is NOT orange as the photo conveys. It is a redish brown brick color, much closer to rust. I really like it and am keeping it because it is an amazing coat for so many reasons. I just want others who are considering buying this color not to be surprised at how much darker it is than the photo. Otherwise I would have given 5 stars.
My childhood was deep south Alabama but have chosen to make Pennsylvania my home. Once the first frost hits I'm generally found to be rating my cold weather gear for the levels of cold. This coat will keep me warm and toasty for the deep winter walks with the dog, the shoveling out the truck, the standing around and complaining about the frozen tundra landscape we navigate in February. Seriously. A coat for those of us who suffer three seasons of frozen phalanges. Thank you Fjallraven for developing a coat that will keep me warm, that I can stash a full travel coffee cup in one pocket, keys, wallet, phone in others, and still have another pocket available for a travel sandwich.
Quality...very good Sizing...very good...Medium for 5'7", 160 lbs, average..easy to layer However, as strange as it may seam, the parka is challenged by cold weather. Purchased it for temps of 10-15, and below, when something more sturdy than my Feathered Friends jacket is needed . Very weird, but even layering, the parka has odd cold spots. This one is cold on inner portion of sleeves, between the elbows and armpits. Also, overall, although not complete failure, the comfort level is just adequate, not really warm. Just feels like it will not stand up to really severe weather. Does not invoke confidence This was chosen in lieu of a LL Beam Baxter Parka.....feel I should have gone with the LL Bean product BTW...the layering was Patagonia Regulator 1 waffle top and Mont Bell down Sweater with hood
I like everything about this coat except for the zipper. I was all set to return this coat the day after I bought it because I couldn't work the zipper. But I figured it out and now I'm very glad I kept it. This is a five star coat even considering the bothersome zipper, which get's easier to work every time I wear it. I'm 5'8" 150 lbs and normally wear a Medium size jacket, but this coat in a Small fits me just right with enough room for added layers and sleeves long enough so I can pull my hands in (which works better for me than gloves). Today I took a 45 minute walk in 3F weather and it did the job. The construction feels very durable and I expect this coat to last a very long time.
I love this jacket. It is my go coat on a cold day.- the weight of it, pockets, hood, neck area, etc., it all makes for a great winter coat. The one issue is the zipper which has proven to be a real pain at times. First of all, the zipper is on the 'wrong side'. It also begins about 4" from the bottom of the coat and (at times) can be difficult to align so it can be zipped up. The zipper itself appears to be a high-quality item but has been a frustrating experience. I actually gave up a couple of times and had my wife zip me up. Again the zipper is the only flaw in a great jacket and it is the only reason for a 4-star review. (Zipper practice has made this less of an issue but it still is there.)
While only three stars, this jacket is easily one of my favorite winter jackets I've ever purchased. The issue with this jacket is the zipper function--it's not easy. I can get used to it being reversed, but it takes finesse to get it in the right position so I can zip. Without finding that sweet spot, you can easily find yourself frustrated and five minutes into the zip process. However, the jacket is very warm as long as you're still dressing smartly for winter weather. I purchased a size up so I could wear a lighter jacket underneath during freezing temps. The hood is large as people say; however, the drawstrings can easily make the hood fit my normal man head. While I do recommend this jacket, I also remind you that patience will be needed for the zipper.
I normally take Medium size shirts and jackets (suit jacket size 40). The Small size of this parka was too snug, while the Medium fits well. However, the hood is enormous. It fits over my ski helmet with lots of room to spare. Even with all the adjustments cinched up as tightly as possible (without the helmet), it looks kind of like a monk's cowl with fake fur trim. Since I don't intend to wear a ski helmet around town, I'll try wearing a baseball cap so the hood doesn't fall down in front of my face.
Everything about this jacket seems top notch. It's extremely warm, does great in the rain, and blocks the wind well. It's not an bargain jacket by any means, but these days you see a lot of winter parkas selling for much more than this. I've tried many of those brands on, but couldn't justify the cost - I think this is easily the same quality as those jackets that sell for considerably more. I bought the black color, and it looks great either dressed up or dressed down. It's not as dressy as a wool coat or something like that, but you wouldn't look totally out of place wearing this with dress slacks on a winter day. The jacket has a total of 14 pockets: two hand pockets, four exterior snap pockets, two exterior zip pockets, two interior zip pockets, two interior snap pockets, and two large mesh pockets that are suitable for putting gloves, hats, or even scarves in. One caveat: the sizes run exceptionally big. I'm a large in most jackets and shirts, and an extra-large in some slim cut shirts. I bought a medium and it fits great. I probably haven't bought a medium anything since I was thirteen years old. That being said, the cut is a fairly trim fit for a parka-style jacket. It's not tight, but it's also not super bulky like some parkas. One other small criticism is that the hood is too large. The hood does have drawstrings and velcro adjustment (to keep it out of your face), so the size is manageable. Still, if I were designing this I would have used a smaller hood. The hood does zip off too.
