Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements.
SHORT: Some pants are available in short sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 2.5 inches shorter than regular sizes.
TALL: Some pants, shirts, jackets and parkas are available in tall sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 3 inches longer and a rise that is 1 inch longer, a shirt or jacket body that is 2 inches longer, a parka body that is 2.5 inches longer and sleeves that are 2.5 inches longer than regular sizes.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

As usual, REI made a good product that is competitive with top brands, but sell for nearly 1/2 as much. I got these for mid-winter lift and bc skiing in Washington. Like any synthetic they dry really fast. Fabric is somewhat stretchy, like most longjohns. Not stretchy like spandex bike shorts. One nice thing is the fabric is kinda slippery so middle layers of fleece slide on and off easy, and they don't bunch up. My jeans are 33-34 waist and 32 inseam. I tried on a couple sizes and bought mediums (just like the size chart says). These have a fly. Some guys have to have the fly. It's a dumb invention if you ask me.
For some reason the threads come loose after one washing. I can't imagine how bad it would be after a couple wearings. TOTAL failure on the manufacturers part.
The REI bottoms are really well made. The outside is smooth to touch and the inside is a soft but not too. Wear these for sports and casual. Learned mountain biking this year in northern CA. But I'm not used to the cold weather so I wear the REI bottoms over my bike liner shorts and long bike pants over that. Works great! They don't restrict movement while hiking and keep my bony legs warm. Probably have worn and washed the bottoms over 50 times and they show no sign of wear from the bicycle seat. They look GAN. When I put these on I feel I am just about ready for anything on the trail. I hope REI never stops selling them!
My husband bought these to supplement his other pair of REI long johns. He usually wears a large size mostly because he needs the length but he is slim. The store was out of everything except an XL so they needed to be ordered. The clerk suggested the medium size so he reluctantly went with a medium. He had it shipped to the house as we live out of town a ways. It arrived today, 5 days later, and fits him perfectly! The waist isn’t too tight and the legs are fine! Great price as well! Go REI! And your awesome staff!
I saw another recent review with similar issues: threads started to snag and run after a single wash. I don't expect these will last me very long. To their credit, they are quite warm and comfortable--I bought them to wear under jeans/regular pants for a trip up to Quebec City in February (-10 to 10 degrees F the whole trip). They kept me nice and warm, and weren't too thick (could wear comfortably under slim fitting pants).
Wore these under my ski pants and they kept me warm in 20 degree weather with some strong winds. Very soft, not sure how they will hold up to repeated washes as I have only washed them once. Comfortable without underwear underneath. Bottoms have elastic but are not very tight so i could pull them up out of ski boots. Plenty of room for wide range of motion. I am 6'2 and slim and a medium fits well.
I bought these bottoms specifically for a snowboarding trip and I was worried that the midweight would be too much. That was not the case. These were so breathable but still kept me warm all day even when they got a little wet. Another thing, my other bottoms seam will leave bruises on my ankles when I lace up my boots but these seams did NOT leave any bruises and were so comfortable tucked in. Highly recommend and will probable buy more pairs for upcoming trips!!
Light yet warm. Easy to wear under other layers and feels like it is not even there. Plenty of room but not excessive in the amount of fabric. I wore on a 0° December day with strong wind pheasant hunting in SW MN. Stayed warm without overheating. Even broke through ice up to my knee and got some water above my boot. These wicked the moisture and I hunted the rest of the day and stayed warm.
I am not usually a fan of base layer bottoms but I am hiking the white mountains in winter. We started our hike of Jefferson with snow on the ground at -2 degrees. I was glad to have a good base layer. The sun was bright so we warmed up quickly once above the tree line but I never overheated. I hardly noticed that I was wearing the RIE Midweight Base Layer which is the best thing I can say about them. Oh - and my legs were warm. Are the stylish? No. Do they work? Yes.
I purchased these for my son who is 6'2" but very thin. The medium fit well in the waist, but the 32" inseam is a bit short for him; adequate. Wish there was a medium tall option. Nice weight of fabric. Washed once and hung to air dry. Seemed to retain shape alright.
