Have Tilley Will Travel
Classic rugged cover. Stands up to the elements as well as it does the confines of minimal packing.
Pricey but worth it; great fit
I got the Tilley Wanderer for fieldwork and kayaking. The price was definitely a stop-and-think amount, and never thought I'd spend this much for a hat! But I love it. It has a great snug fit on my head so it feels quite secure even without the strap. Many hats I've tried fit too shallowly on the head and blow off easily. Some hats look dorky and unflattering and I was surprised how much I liked the aesthetics of this one. A keeper, and so long as I don't lose it, I expect the cost-per-wear over its lifetime will be very low. Will be sure to wear a clip-on hat retainer when I'm on the water!
Love this hat, but the sizing is weird.
I have an older version of this hat which I love, so I decided to get another in the gold color. I love the new one as well! The only strange thing is their sizing. I measured my head at 21.5” and ordered their size 7.125 to have a little wiggle room. When I got it and tried it on the hat was extremely tight and barely fit. I ended up returning that and reordering a size 7.375 and it fit well. Snug enough to not fly off but not tight enough to cause headaches or cut off circulation. Overall I love this hat, I wear it everywhere. just know that if you’re ordering online the sizing will be weird. Best to try it on in store if you can!
64 year old bald guy finds love in Alaska!
I took a trip to Alaska and forgot my hat, Anchorage REI had this one. In the first three days, pouring rain, hike with high wind, direct sun over my bald head. Best hat award! I must own 20 hats this is in the top 2-3! Comfortable and functional.
Great hat, unmanageable brim.
Great hat. Well made. I got a very oversized one at 7 7/8ths. Only thing I didn't like was the brim would not stay in a position that I liked. So instead of returning, I cut the hem of the brim slightly and routed a 12AWG solid copper wire through it. Perfect now, after I fixed it.
Keeps you dry even in the wind
Happy to say that this hat really works in wind and rain.
Bombproof
Not your standard sunhat. For those who backpack in regions where rain, sun, and wind are all concerns, the Tilley is perfect. The brim is wide enough to keep the sun off your face and back of your neck but narrow enough to wear easily while carrying a backpack. The cotton fabric is water resistant enough to keep the rain off your head in all but the most constant downpours. And the chinstrap-neckstrap design will keep the hat on your head in high winds. If you're looking for a practical utility hat that will take real trail abuse, this is it.
My Tilley hat...
My hat is awesome. Life time warranty is great. I totally love shopping REI.
Great hat!
Just spent a week backpacking in Yosemite and this hat rarely left my head during the day. It was comfortable enough that I often forgot it was there, which is great considering I'm generally not a fan of sun hats. It seems really well made and like it will last, and I like the look of it much better than many similar options. It's pricey, but in this case the quality matches the cost.
Quality hat but not suitable for PacificNW climate
No doubt about it - this is a well made hat - but too hot to wear on a scorching NW summer day hike. And, the cotton duck material may be good in damp conditions but maybe not so great on winter hikes through a cold rain-soaked forest. Sadly, I didn't grasp this til I bought the hat & wore it one very hot afternoon last week. After one sweltering hour in it I knew I was going to have to take advantage of REI's gracious return policy & take it back for a refund. I bought the hat because 1.my doctor advised me to start wearing brimmed hats 2. the REI sales clerk raved about Tilley's product quality & 3. my wife really liked it on me. OK - I should have been a more enlightened consumer. At least I had sense enough to buyt it at REI. They gave me a refund & I bought another hat made from a modern & more suitable fabric - thank you REI !
