Perfect for what I use them for
In 2018 I bought two of these bags, this 120L and the companion 90L, and used them to carry my gear on a van-supported Trans-America bicycle trip (a camping trip from the Atlantic to the Pacific). Every evening we got off our bikes, grabbed our duffels from the van and set up camp. Every morning we packed up camp, threw our duffels in the van, and rode our bikes west. These Duffels were perfect for this trip. They have handles everywhere you want to grab them, they are sturdy and simple, they can take a beating and not show it. The backpack straps come in handy now and then when you have to walk a distance, and the rest of the time store out of the way. I'd buy these duffels again in a heartbeat (but I don't have to, because my two are in great shape even after an 83-day camping trip, surviving daily in a bouncing van pile under my friends bags).
seems sturdy but no separate crossbody strap
I have not used it yet but I was hoping for an actual proper duffel bag shoulder strap. The product description mentions 3 options for carrying, one of them being this shoulder strap, and these options are listed with "and" in between. The actual design is to re-purpose of one of the backpack straps. I learned this after having a second one shipped and the rep herself being misled that there is a separate shoulder strap. I tried out the suggested setup but I don't believe the strap can withhold the weight (up to 50 plus anything extra when being pulled or flung rapidly) or that this carrying position is comfortable, of the weight would be distributed evenly or correctly.
Baby needs so much stuff
My wife, newborn, and I recently traveled to Grand Teton and Yellowstone NPs for about a week and this bag worked incredibly well for what we needed. This 20 lb baby somehow requires a million things (diapers, wipes, so many clothes, toys, other things) which very quickly use up more space than you can spare in a carry-on. My wife and I filled this bag up with everything the kiddo needs plus a few things of our own and checked the bag through to our destination. Carrying this bag was a cinch with the backpack straps; and being able to squish everything down using the compression straps was great for keeping everything tight so carrying the large bag wasn't a chore. There are also some well placed pockets inside the bag which helped us keep smaller items separate. Honestly I'd recommend this bag to anyone who needs to travel with a lot of stuff. Does the job perfectly.
Good Backpack Duffel
We Bought two of these for my sons to use for two weeks traveling around Norway. They hold a ton of clothes and the backpack straps make it easier to haul the heavy loads. The straps are comfortable for shorter periods (an hour here or there) but not for all day use with a heavy load.
tremendous gear bag
This is part of a gear setup for myself and two boys - skiing and boarding. We pack our skis/boards in two boxes and include North Face and REI base camp bags as our “boot” bags. The REI 120 liter ends up weighing around 40 pounds with two pairs of snowboard boots and our outdoor gear. It opens fully around the perimeter of the bag so it’s very easy to load out edge to edge. Loads like you would a box. The North Face bag has a large border from the edge of the opening to the side of the bag. I load the NF bag and then have to grab the end and shake the contents down to free up more space on the side. The border make it a hassle to get more clothing or any gear in the extra space that’s created on the side. The strap handles on the REI, absent on the NF, are great when one person is carrying to the car. The side grab handles are good when you have two people carrying. This is a well thought bag that allows travelers to pack a bag up to the 50lb limit very easily.
Excellent gear hauler for 4x4 the back country
REI amazing duffle I am able to get two metal detectors and a huge load of snow gear, dry close, communications electronics, and food into this duffle without any trouble! Love the backpack strap option and nifty metal "T" bar quick connection system at the end of the straps. The duffle is great to throw in the back of the rig but every better knowing I can hike out with my gear if need be with the backpack straps. Well done!
Makes long term travel easy
I was between the 120L and 90L for a trip to Australia and settled on the 120L so that I could pack absolutely everything I have into 1 bag. Was not disappointed. Comfortable and durable. The variety of straps on this bag also allowed me to sinch the thing down when I had extra space in the bag. I am about to buy the 60L as a companion to my 120L. Highly recommend the size for long term travel.
Traveling with family of five
It’s the perfect bag if you like traveling without a rolling suitcase. I used this bag for 8 days in Greece with my family (two adults and three kids). It opens like a suitcase but you wear it on your back. All the straps can be stowed very easily when checking the bag on the airplane. Definitely a great purchase if this is the type of bag you are looking for.
Great Gear!
This duffle met all expectations and needs. Used during 2019’s Oregon Classic Bicycle event. Gear accommodated tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and a weeks worth of clothing all of which stayed dry when exposed to rain. The optional backpack straps worked well to transport. Additionally used as airline checked baggage without markings. Highly recommended.
Great duffle not great for travel
I love the size of this because I can fit everything in it but unfortunately when I fit everything in it it ends up way too heavy for my small frame. Sent it back and opted for one with wheels instead.
