Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spot on for travel So over the years I've used many different types of checkable luggage (as in Airline checked baggage ). None really dazzled me over time or on long trips. They either deteriorated with use or had some annoying design flaw. Now my new REI 90 Duffel proved spot on in a 2 week travel to the northwest that ranged from Portland OR, Mt Hood, Mt Rainer, Seattle, and Mt Olympic Park. The backpack harness system IMO is perfect. I easily carry and store large amounts of gear and clothes. The multiple pockets and synch straps are perfect for managing the load. The material is durable and when I get home I can return the entire Duffel to is small stuff sack for storage. Really neat system. Love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Made Bag for Extended Trips The first thing I noticed about this duffel was the heavy duty materials and put together very well. It had ample space for all my gear on a week long fishing trip, and the compression straps were a excellent addition. I had to fit a bunch of gear in my Jeep Wrangler, so minimizing unneeded bulk was helpful. I especially liked the organized pocket so I could find things quickly, like phone charger and other items. I also really like that it had backpack straps that stow away, but are easy to access and attach. My only issue is the bale handle strap attachment. It is unique and easy to use, and while I never had problems with them coming unattached, I'm afraid in the future the loops will become worn and easier for them to pop out, and I wouldn't feel comfortable checking the bag in the airport without the handles stowed away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great features This bag is loaded with great features which led me to purchase it over others I was considering. The handles detach easily for quick storage, something the airline employee commented on as I checked my bag. Likewise, the pack straps store quickly in their padded compartment. The pack straps and padded top make the bag comfortable to carry as a backpack, and the eight handle/pack attachment points provide different carry options (e.g., over the shoulder, handle, backpack). The external compression straps allow you to strap the bag down tight, making the bag easy to load or check. The ripstop fabric on the bag's upper sections is lighter weight than other makes, which reduces the bag's weight but may be less durable over time. I did notice abrasions in a few places after checking it the first time. Overall, the Big Haul Duffel is a well constructed bag with great features.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight and roomy, great value for travel Our family of three bought this for a 10-day trip to Europe. We packed light and put everything into vacuum bags. Doesn't leave much room for souvenirs, obviously, but a sub-30lb bag is not terrible to haul around by the backpack straps, but assumedly this is a far denser load than most people will put in this. It definitely doesn't feel good for long hauls as it's not a backpacking pack with a hip harness. Its profile being square and not round is great for vacuum bagged clothes. It's not the most comfortable load but it sure beats dragging rolling luggage through the cobblestones! Pretty great. Zippers and fabric seem sturdy. I am mildly concerned about the durability of the plastic buckles over time but that may well be fine. The stitching and fabric seems to be of high quality and it offered in subtle colors if you want it. It handled five planes and a train without any issue. It also costs 45% less than the Osprey and notably less than the Patagonia.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Massive(ly) Versatile The Big Haul 90 Duffel is fantastic for travel on longer trips. Not only does it hold a ton of equipment, but it uses the space wisely. There are a few external compartments for things you may need to grab quickly (like a passport) and a zip compartment internally that is great for stuff like a shaving kit. The vast majority of the space inside is one open compartment which gives you lots of room for clothes, gear, laptops, whatever. Even large or odd shaped items fit easily. My favorite feature of the bag was the multiple carrying options. There are sewn on exterior handles at the sides, and removable handles for the top (made with metal fixtures so they won't easily break). In addition, there are backpack straps which stow in the top of the bag so, even if your hands are full rushing through an airport or something, it's still a breeze to carry.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Bag for Travel I used this bag on a 6 day trip that involved a flight and multiple airport shuttles. This bag provides a lot of space and versatility. After packing everything I needed for a 6-day trip, I still had plenty of space in the bag. The cinch straps allowed me to get rid of the extra space and everything was packed in tightly. The bag has lots of handles and strap options. There are backpack straps that tuck away and I didn't end up using them since I had a small backpack I was using as a carry-on. I did use the detachable handles to carry my bag around and they were easy to unhook and stash away when I checked my bag. There are handles on every side of the bag, so without the detachable handles, there are plenty of place to grab the back for a quick move. You wouldn't want to carry the bag very far without the backpack straps or the detachable handle but the other handles are handy for quick moves. I had a hard time figuring out how to access the ID pocket. I searched and searched and couldn't find the opening. I asked my husband to try to figure it out and we both couldn't find it and thought it had been sewn shut. I eventually found the somewhat hidden zipper that provided access to the ID pocket and I placed my ID in the slot. The cover of the ID pocket is colored/shaded in such a way that is was very hard to read the text of my business card in the slot. I did wish there were more pockets or dividers inside the bag (there are two small pockets on the top flap of the bag) but I also realize this is meant to be more of a duffle bag so that is why it didn't have more pockets inside. My husband was excited when he saw this bag and he asked if he could use it for his upcoming fly fishing trip to Yellowstone. He will be driving there and I think the bag will be perfect for his trip. As a shorter (5'3") woman who hasn't done much weight lifting lately, I do think this bag can be a bit hard to manage for airline travel when you have to move it between flights and airport shuttles. I think this bag is perfect for camping and car adventures where you don't have to carry or move it too far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rugged Awesomeness This bag is awesome. It is huge. I was able to pack for eight days for relief efforts in Houston, TX. With clothes, rescue gear, and a bottle of bourbon. The backpack straps were surprisingly comfortable. The buckle system is very cool. The zippers are rugged. We will see how it stand up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Plenty of room for your next adventure Overall I think this is a good duffel bag that needs just a few tweaks to make it great. Initial thoughts after one weekend trip: -I love that it packs away into a small bag for easy storage (though it would be even better if it packed into itself somehow...non attached bags are easy to lose...) -Materials seem durable yet light -Love that it includes backpack straps -Love the number of handles on the bag, very easy to find a place to grab it -Huge amount of space (though that's to be expected with 90L!) -I wish that it included a detachable over the shoulder strap (first thing I did when full was to sling it over my shoulder using the top handles...wasn't really comfortable. There are many times when I already have a backpack on but need both hands free). This is probably the biggest thing I would like added to the bag -I wish that it included some sort of secondary compartment separate from the main area. Often times when I travel I need to bring boots or cycling shoes or whatnot and I do not always want them intermingling with my other clothes (same goes with dirty clothes). I also find end pockets very useful on bags like this even if they can't expand to accommodate shoes or larger amounts of clothes. Potentially could also be used to pack into itself. -The internal pockets on the top of the bag work fairly well though I wish the smaller one had a second zipper on its side similar to the larger one. I can see how the current placement would make it easier to get into the pocket without opening the bag entirely, however, when the bag was open, I found it harder to get to stuff in the pocket than if the zipper was what would now be the top (I think 2 zippers would work great) -I think the shoulder strap (and handle) attachment system works fairly well and should certainly never break. However, I find myself preferring a carabiner style clipping mechanism

Can I use as a checked baggage?

Asked by: Superwoman
This duffel measures 29 x 15.4 x 13.4 inches and will be okay for checked baggage with most airlines. That said, we recommend checking with your airline prior to purchasing.
