A+ for features, but questionable durability.
Found these while looking for duffels we could use on a trip to SE Asia. After a lot of time comparing the Big Haul to the Patagonia Black Hole, we went with the Big Haul for a few features that we really liked: 1) Lid is the size of the entire bag, making it easier to pack and unpack. 2) Carrying handles can be removed so they don't get caught by luggage conveyor belts. 3) Grab handles on sides, making it possible to carry the bag at your side more like a suitcase. 4) External compression straps can be cinched down to make the bag smaller. We checked the bags on our flights, and unfortunately this is where the review turns bad. After just one trip, the bags took a major beating. I know baggage handlers aren't gentle, but the material on both bags already has cracks and sections where the coating has come off completely. This really surprised me as we have other bags that have lasted years even with the abuse from air travel. So, based on how much damage they got after just one trip, I lost confidence in the long-term durability and returned them. I will give the Patagonia a try even though it lacks some of the features I mentioned above as strengths for the Big Haul.
Well designed duffel for all the essentials
Traveling with this bag has been a breeze. It has held all the gear my wife and needed for long weekend trips and could easily hold enough gear for a week or more for a solo trip. The organization pockets are well placed and protected some more precious items like my glasses and electronics. The seems very well constructed and kept everything completely dry in the rain. Being able to carry as a backpack also came in handy when trying to navigate crowded spaces while traveling. So far my only complaint is the buttons that hold the two top handles together can be difficult to snap. It's a minor issue on what is otherwise a great product.
Perfect
Bought this bag for a week long trip to Hawaii and it was perfect. I used this bag with Gonex packing cubes I purchased on Amazon. I packed 4 cubes plus flip flops, an extra pair of shoes and my small bag of toiletries and everything fit nicely. There was also a small amount of space to spare. Even with everything that I packed the bag didn’t feel super heavy on my back and was comfortable to carry backpack style. 100% satisfied with my purchase. I had planned to use the bag as a carry on but ended up checking it with the airline. It amazingly held up to the abuse that the baggage crew puts travelers luggage through.
Versatile duffel for trips!
I recently took this duffel a two-week trip to China. It's safe to say this will be my go-to bag for short and longer travel trips. I loved how I could literally grab the bag anywhere -- to get it off the luggage claim conveyor belt, load it in and out of vehicles, or just pick it up and go. The compression straps were great as they kept everything in place. It was nice to open my luggage once I arrived and find everything in the exact spot where I had packed them. The stowable shoulder straps are brilliant. They made it easy to wear the bag through the airport and around the country. I liked that I could tuck the straps away in the hideaway pocket when not in use. The bag works wonderfully as checked luggage. I didn't try it as carry-on but I think it can cinch down tightly enough to be used as carry-on. I'm a fairly light packer so this duffel and a backpack were all I needed for the trip. The bag is absolutely perfect except for some minor inconveniences that ultimately led to a 4 rating instead of a 5: the bale handle snaps were difficult to snap into place more often than not. I also would have preferred the bale handles to be thicker. The thin fabric made the bag a bit unwieldy to carry when using the bale handles. So I often carried it with the shoulder straps or using the other handles when it wasn't on my back. While this bag was great to wear around, I think it would be difficult to use for backpacking and carry around for hours because there are no chest or waist straps to hold it in place. Overall, excellent bag and well-designed.
Nice size for a multi-day trip
I used this bag for the first time on a two-night business trip. The bag is large enough for a 2-4 day trip. Things I really like about the bag: it doesn't feel at all bulky but holds quite a lot, it has handles on all sides, the side handles are comfortable to hold the bag over the shoulder, it's pretty comfortable wearing it is a backpack at least for a short period of time, feels high quality. In the picture I do show the bag with the shoulder straps out, but I think I will end up mostly using this without them. The padding on the top of the bag where the shoulder straps get tucked away make it look like the bag is upside down. It just takes some getting used to, but I keep picking up and putting down the bag upside down. I wouldn't mind an ability to separate a compartment inside the bag. The name tag/ID window is a nice feature if I use it on a plane (which I will). I recommend this bag if you're looking for something a little larger than an overnight but also not bulky and easy to carry. This will be my go-to travel bag for any trip over 1-night.
Very Versatile
I got this product last week and used it for a weekend trip to New Braunfels. I love the versatility of the bag. You can hold it as a duffel or as a backpack or you can also hold it from one of the four handles available. There was plenty of room to put everything i needed for my getaway. There are three compartments (two on the top of the bag and one on the side) to keep things organized and separated. I also loved that it came in a bag where I can store it when I am not using it... which I also used to store a few things and stow away in the bag during my trip!
Never pay for a frontier carry-on ever again!
Love this duffel because it rocks. But the unbeatable aspect to this bag is that it is easy to sneak onto airlines as a "personal item" when worn as a backpack. I travel for weekend trips often with cheap tickets on Frontier and Spirit. This bag allows me to pack 60L worth of stuff without having to pay $40 for a carry-on each flight. This is tried and true. I've flown on 10+ frontier flights and 4 spirit flights since getting this bag and have never been stopped at the gate and asked to pay for a carry-on.
Weeklong trip to Europe
My husband and I each have one of these 60L duffels and used them for a trip to Europe that was a little over a week. We were able to fit all of the clothes we needed for walking around European cities as well as attending a wedding. I think my packed bag was around 25 pounds. I wore it as backpack when we were moving between cities catching trains and planes and it worked very well. Only at one point during a 30 minute walk did it get painful for my shoulders (in which case I was wishing I had a true backpacking backpack with a belt!). I chose this bag over the Patagonia version because of the cinch straps, and I think was the right choice. It helps a lot to be able to cinch down the bag! We flew American Airlines and British Airways and technically this bag is longer than the carry-on dimensions, but we managed to carry on this bag on all of our flights, including old and new Boeing 737s, an Airbus A380, and a Boeing 777-200. The bag fit into all of the overhead bins perfectly. It also worked well in overhead space on trains. All-around great bag. Looking forward to using it for other upcoming travels!
Great travel bag
I purchased this bag to use as a checked luggage for my 6 months trip. The bag easily held a bunch of my clothes and gear, with room to spare. It only weighed 25 pounds once full. This bag is great for a weekend trips or longer vacations. Very versatile and convenient to use. It was easy to carry through the airport, but I wouldn't recommend taking it on a long hike or backpacking trip. The weight and structure isn't designed for long use. My only complaint is that I wish it had more compartments on the inside. I purchased compatible gear bags to separate my different items (otherwise its basically one empty space ) I love this bag and will be using it for many trips to come!
Best weekend to week long bag EVER
Most airlines accepted it as carry on (if not packed to “bulging” - which it handles very well.) Scrunches nicely into overheads. Light weight but very tough. The backpack straps and compartment are EXTREMELY handy. I love this bag - especially the orange color (easy to find when checked). It is very accessible and the sides come in nicely as it is packed so that zipping it up it painless. Used it in Europe for a three week bicycle tour (it was handled in the sag-vehicle and by the occasional hotel help... I had no worries and no problems. I have already had three friends buy one!
