I’m a bit surprised at the low ratings and critiques from the other reviews of this bag. I bought this as a travel bag for a trip to the Philippines this past summer. I knew this wasn’t big enough to carry all of my clothes but that’s not what I bought it for. I wanted a bag that I could carry all of my high valued gear as well as stuff I knew I might need that would be easy to access. Through my 3 week trip, it carried my laptop, a jacket, change of light travel clothes, a small essential toiletry case, additional shoes and my DJI Mavic drone. I can honestly say it delivered on everything I was hoping for in a travel bag. The bag itself was comfortable to carry – no pinching or cutting off circulation, and unlike another reviewer’s experience, I did not have issues with it being top heavy. I’m also confused about some reviewers’ claims about build quality as I did not have any issues regarding the zippers or the bag’s overall construction. It held up very well throughout my trip and even now still looks brand new. Since returning from my trip, I’ve used the bag for several weekend excursions, using it as my only luggage and it was able to accommodate enough clothing for 2-3 days. In these instances, I used the bottom compartment more for my dirty clothes rather than a shoe compartment and it was fine. The only initial critique that I had was the bag’s lack of compression straps to cinch down everything. Honestly though, this has not been an issue at all. I don’t feel like things are moving around when I’m carrying it on my back but I’ve also not used this, and wouldn’t intend to use it for long back packing outings. The bottom line is if you plan to use this for short, weekend trips or as a back pack carry on, this is worthy of consideration. Speaking of carry on, I know that one review talked about the bag being too big for that purpose but my trip to the Philippines involved a total of 6 different plane rides, a couple of long bus rides and even a few boat rides. I was always able to fit this under my seat on the planes. It stuck out a little but not in a way that was prohibitive or obstructive. For the bus and boat rides, I would store it in the overhead compartment without any issue. Overall, I would highly recommend this bag.

The only daypack with a respectable waist strap

I have had this bag for 6 months. I really do not love it. It does not meet my needs, which are primarily business air travel with a heavy laptop and accessories. I spent about 3 hours at an REI store shopping for a suitable bag when my older Victorinox-knockoff split at the seams in the middle of a business trip. This was the best available bag, but there is a MAJOR void across the board in daypack offerings - this is the only one with a remotely padded waist strap!!! The waist strap on this bag is NOT comfortable, but it is more supportive than anything else in the REI store that was not a backpacking bag with a billion straps hanging off (as is, I use velcro ties or binder clips to keep the excess straps on this bag out of the way). This bag is built to transport large laptops - my 14" Lenovo ThinkPad is definitely on the heavier side - and has enough space to pack for an overnight or, for my use, business air travel. The problem is that it's very top heavy even with all the load at the bottom of the bag. It looks weird in the photos because it's built with a narrow bottom and wide top. It does NOT sit on its bottom - it is always rolling forward (and pulling away from your body while worn, which is VERY bad for your back) so in order to set it down you have to lean it against your leg or a wall, else it will be lying on its front. I have some difficulty using the largest compartment of this bag, as it's wide at the top, narrow at the bottom and the zipper really doesn't seem to go far enough down the bag. I would like to put my lunch box in the bottom and purse on top during daily commute/use, but accessing the bottom of the bag is just awkward and difficult. I travel with my medium-sized purse in the bottom of the large compartment and it is horribly inaccessible. There are unfortunately no compartments/pockets in this bag that are accessible while in use, so plan to use your pockets or I have not found any practical use at all for the bottom "shoe compartment", as putting anything in there messes up the utility of the largest inner compartment of the bag and it's awkward to access. I use the side pockets (one is longer than the other) for a 16oz coffee mug and a 32oz Nalgene bottle. Both fit well and I have not yet had any issues with items slipping out, but I also noticed during my last trip that the elastic is starting to stretch and I do not expect it to last much longer. I wish there was a strap above each side pouch for securing items. All in all, this bag has gotten the job done, but in a way that has me scowling at it after every trip and pushed to the back of the closet until I need to travel again. It's not great for air travel because it has a lot of straps and does not secure to a roll-aboard bag. I will probably bring it back to REI when I'm next in a city that has one and try a different style of bag altogether.

Larger laptop sleeve than the Router pack!

I needed a backpack to carry my 17" Dell Precision work computer and serve as a carry-on for work trips. There is a real lack of backpack choices for 17" computers and I was looking for a backpack to fit my work's 17" Dell Precision and wanted to try on anything I bought. So I went into an REI and a staff member measured the laptop sleeves for me. Result: the Router pack, although labeled as being for 17" laptops, has a SMALLER sleeve than the Overhaul! It mattered a lot for me as even the Overhaul sleeve was a tight fit for my large computer at first (it has since relaxed a bit and it fits perfectly now). I feel that this bag treads the fine line between being a real "outdoors/travel" bag and being an office-appropriate briefcase alternative. It's much more comfortable than a shoulder bag, and the sternum strap and waist belt are very helpful when it's fully loaded. Don't like the waist strap? Tuck it in the back panel or buckle it around the front (as it is in my photos). You can even stow the shoulder straps if you're checking it, although I wouldn't check this bag unless I had to. So far it's served me well for about 6 months and everything works great, even the sternum buckle whistle is loud. I'm very happy with it! To address some other reviews' concerns: -Yes, the side pockets are elastic and a bit narrow. They fit a 16 oz S'ip/S'well and a 20 oz Klean Kanteen great, but I don't put my 32 oz Nalgene in them. -I normally use the bottom pocket for a bulky laptop charger, but it's a good size for shoes, laundry, etc. -This bag IS compatible with a rolling carry-on. Turned sideways, there's a slot for the roller bag handle. It fits under airline seats if you don't pack it super full (don't use the expansion zipper). -It does tend to fall over. My previous shoulder bag didn't stand up on it's own either, so this wasn't a problem for me. In airports, if it isn't on my back, it's on the handle of my roller bag anyway. -The top is slightly wider but I haven't found it to be top-heavy (maybe because of my brick of a charger in the bottom pocket!) but there are a few inches between the bottom of the laptop sleeve and the bottom of the pack to prevent computers from hitting the floor, so if you don't have much else in the bag it could be top heavy. -Yes, the zippers on the main compartment don't go all the way down; this hasn't bothered me. The zippers on the laptop sleeve pocket and organizer pocket do unzip all the way.

Great for it's purpose!

Comfy-worn bag! Gym shoes, extra clothes, ipad, laptop, AWESOME. I used this for work and carried a massive 17" macbook, lenovo laptop and external monitor all inside, PLUS the shoes and change of clothes for like a year. I JUST BROKE THE STERNUM STRAP CLIP STEPPING ON IT!!! They're sending me a replacement clip free of charge. This bag rules, I have a bag addiction and this one ended it. Great grab-n-go for running on a plane as carry-on with just everything you need for a few days. Sternum strap and fit is awesome and essential. Belt strap I rarely use and it slides nicely into the pack itself. No flopping around. Bought one for a lady friend on her way to China. Fit her great and she digs as well, Very different frame than me so I think this works great for everyone.

Big Travel Pack

I bought this pack to become a carry on for air travel, in addition to my rolling suitcase It is well made and has a ton of pockets. This North Face bag carries a ton of stuff. The issue is that it is huge. It barely or doesn't really fit under the seat on planes. You should not purchase it for this purpose. Instead buy it if it will be your main pack that you put in the overhead. I am going to exchange it for a smaller pack.

Absolutely love it!

I bought this bag for carry on only travel and so far it's been fantastic. It's comfortable to wear, if I pack efficiently it fits everything! Laptop, accessories, shoes, clothes, toiletry bag. Everything! I plan on using it for international travel soon! I've owned it for almost a year and is held up wonderfully with near daily use. Highly recommend.

Stellar Pack

I am using this as a daily pack. It does well at being thin and convenient when I don't fill it to capacity. With the expandable zipper, this pack goes to it's full 40L capacity. I look forward to using this feature during my Europe trip this summer, which it will be absolutely perfect for. PRrce was good for the Quality. The only problem I have is that it's only two loops on the front for clipping on gear seem thin and not very durable. I wish there was just one (or two) heavy-duty loops on the outside front face just to clip my 40oz Thermoflask, which doesn't fit in the bottle sleeves on the side.

One-bag travel!

I purchased this two years ago and have zero regrets. It's comfortable to wear in airports, train stations, and city streets; it's easy to stow in overhead compartments or luggage lockers. Sometimes I forget where I've placed something because there are so many suitable pockets and compartments. I love that it looks classier than my daypack for hiking, and the straps stow away if I ever need to check the bag. I spent a long time test-wearing and test-packing all packs in this category and none of the others were satisfactory. I've used this for weekends in NYC, SF, and CHI, and I've used it for full weeks abroad. Pair it with a "personal item" for the perfect travel and day bag set up.

Much smaller than it appears

I was looking for a large backpack to be a carry on for travel. I was very excited to get this backpack from The North Face which is known for having very excellent quality in their products. Although this bag says 40L, there's and insane amount of individual pockets everywhere and no single large pocket to put the majority of my clothing. This may be a great bag for a student or someone who needs lots of separation between books, laptops, notes, etc. But it's a terrible design for someone that needs one large pocket and just a couple other smaller ones, for example. I ended up returning it.

For the highly-organized commuter and student!

Love this backpack for the ample space for laptop, soft protective material for laptop and for glasses, and plenty of pockets to keep organized. The side handle is perfect for negotiating it in overhead on commuter train and on airplane. The opening to slide over carry-on suitcase handle was a LIFESAVER traveling in the UK and France. It seems heavy, but with the protective back, the weight is worth the extra protection and comfort on back. Can't emphasize how wonderful it's been to "set it up" for success in always putting items in predictable pockets so that I can quickly fish out flashdrives, shoes, water, pens, glasses, train tickets, books, etc. I'm organized and always ready to hit the ground running.

Great for quick lightweight travel

I go to china pretty often. This bag is great for crossing borders and lightweight overhead bin or under the seat travel. It fits what I need to be on the ground for 4-5 days. -2 pants and shirts -4 underwear and socks -workout outfit plus water shoes to workout in -Computer -chargers -passports and money -Toiletries -rain shell -running pants and sleeping t shirt Good to go. Only drawback is that it needs a little better organization for travel docs but it is ok. Best one on the market for guys. My wife needs more room due to show issue.
