Great utility, confident coat!
Have been learning about and trying on jackets for the last couple months. My friend picked this jacket off the rack at REI and said "you're done looking...here it is". Have been wearing it for several 1.5 hour hikes in the -5 to -10 deg. F temps with -20 to -28 winchill in East Central WI along the Lake. Wore a 25 lb pack, a light synthetic REI jacket and a thermal long sleeve with a t shirt underneath and felt warm and protected. Blocks the wind completely. Pit vents were nice to get rid of some excess heat while hiking. Not as high tech as the premium brands, but the feature set is great, insulation is great without being overly puffy, the shell doesn't notice scratchy branches, hood cinches down effectively, pockets are large enough to put heavily gloved hands into for rewarming and my large phone easily fits in the chest pocket with a lot of room to spare. Was comfortable while wearing my pack. Plan to wear it on all winter weekend hiking/camping trips and normal daily activities. Very happy with it.

can't compete with my other down coat
As waterproof, windproof down jackets are hard to come by, I had high expectations for this reasonably priced coat. Bottom line, this coat is not warm-even though it uses 850 down, there just isn't much of it. My arms and back got cold very quickly in only 35 degree weather with very strong winds. The locking mechanism to adjust the fit of the hood is buried under material making it impossible to make adjustments on the go-- make sure you have it adjusted prior to going out with it on. My Mountain Hardware Downtown coat purchased also at REI is infinitely warmer and the far better choice, keeping me warm in single digit and teen temperatures with no problems. I returned this Stormhenge coat.

Staying Warm And Dry

This is the first down jacket that I have owned and I have been more than pleased with my purchase. My complaint with down jackets in the past has always been their traditional lack of water proofing and overly puffy exterior. Good news for me that the Stormhenge addressed both of these issues! I’m 6’ tall,185 pounds with a 6’5” wing span and the medium fit perfectly. I’ve warn this jacket in the rain, on the mountain and to and from work daily with it meeting all of my needs. The down instantly warms me up and when needed the hood fits snuggly and comfortably. If anybody is looking for an all purpose down with utility then this is the jacket for you!

Warm and air tight

Great jacket and form-fitting. It offers wind proof protection and the 850 down fill really keeps me warm. From skiing in the French Alpes to sauntering around the streets of Warsaw, this jacket was perfect to keep me warm without many under layers. Plus, it compresses nicely into the hood. It offers long zippers under each of the sleeves for ventilation, the zippered pockets are lined to offer a warm retreat for your hands. The hood is a great supplement to keep the heat in and it has various pulls to make the jacket tighten up around your body. It even has a pocket around your heart area for additional storage.

Warmest puffer

This jacket is been great so far. I live in the nj/ny area and it has kept me plenty warm in the recent deep freezes into the single digits (f). I was a little afraid this jacket would be too warm, but it breaths well while also being breaking the wind. I like that the fabric is water proof too. You’d still need a shell if it’s seriously wet or raining but it’s less tempormental than a traditional puffer. It also packs to about a liter if you get a stuff sack. Sizing is a notch big. I’m 190 and 5’11” and a large was a bit loose in the body but the medium was too small to add a fleece or sweater mid layer. Went with the large

Excellent, stylish, warm, and waterproof!

Now that I've had the jacket a couple months I can do a proper review. This jacket is warm! I've used it several times down to the mid-40s (F) with just a t-shirt underneath and didn't feel the cold at all for the 30-minute periods I was out. I've also worn it in very windy conditions at the same temperature and didn't feel a thing through it. I'm 6'0" tall, 210 lbs; so a relatively chubby dude. The Medium still fits me perfectly. It's snug enough to look stylish for going out and about around town but not so snug that I can't layer underneath it. The hand-warming zippered pockets, adjustable hood, and two-way zipper are all pluses (though the main zipper is a real pain until you get the hang of it, definitely a bit of a flaw like others have said). I took it out on a camping trip this past weekend and was still able to layer underneath without it being restrictive- base layer, t-shirt, and sweater. With the layers under, it took several hours in mid-40s temps to even start to feel the cold, and even then it wasn't unbearable. It rained the whole second day and I never got wet wearing it. The water beads up nicely off of the surface. Though I will say, the water droplets I didn't wipe off the hood did start to soak through after sitting there for an hour, but had only just started to before I wiped them away. Highly recommend the jacket!

100% Worth It, I Absolutely Love It

I lucked out on my purchase when it was on sale just before Christmas 2020. It was on sale for 100$ off normal price. I also got a GREAT color - its a sort of burnt orange/copper tone. See picture attached. Someone here wrote that they could wear a T shirt and nothing else... they're right. This jacket is so well insulating and SUPER SUPER light. I would 100% bring this hiking or camping in the winter... Now to go find someone to go winter camping with...

First rate Winter parka!

I have always been an advocate of layering [I have an excellent Gore-Tex shell and plenty of layers to stay warm], but this is so nice and warm and light: I love it! When it’s cold out, it’s nice to have this to just put on over a shirt and go. It is cut full enough to put on over a couple of layers [pile, sweater, vest, etc.] if it’s really cold out, but feels really nice and warm just over a base layer. The pit zips are a great design feature in a down jacket; overheating under exertion should not be an issue. The materials are excellent and the design/workmanship are impeccable. I love the hidden drawcords in the hood and at the lower hem. Great fit for me: and 5’9” 150lbs Medium. Well done, REI. Five stars.

Fear no evil; weather

I live in Minnesota where gear like this cowers if not suitably insulated. But this jacket is astoundingly warm for its weight (and price) and it appears extremely durable despite breaking a zipper in the first month. This explains the one star deduction, along with kinda ugly secondary fabric on the black version. I was given another jacket with no questions asked, of course, and my new one has been a champion in temperatures from zero to 30Âş. I love the super warm hood and chin guard that provide tremendous shelter from the wind. Yes, the zipper's stubborn but the rest of this jacket is so good that it's well worth the price, and considerably more. I couldn't imagine what "Pat" or "Arc" would charge for this gem. REI wins.

great cold weather jacket

Without getting too technical, I have to say this jacket is great. It's very warm and has all the features I need and nothing I don't need. Yes the hood is large but after tinkering with it for a few minutes, I got it to where I want it to be. I'm 5' 11" and 250 lbs. The XL fits perfectly which is very psychologically refreshing considering I have to get everything else in XXL. A previous reviewer listed its "pot belly" characteristics as a "con". I completely disagree with that. To me it's a "pro". It's nice to see not all companies have slimmed down their clothing lines. Also, I don't know how people can wear this jacket in any weather above 40 degrees. It's 15 degrees here today and it kept me warm & toasty.

Great Down Jacket

I bought this jacket for use on Colorado 14ers in winter and a winter summit climb to Mt Washington in New Hampshire. I’m pleased to report that it has handled drenching rains, howling wind, blizzards and sub-zero cold like a champ. I have the same issues with the finicky zipper but it’s manageable. The hood fits a helmet and goggles. I don’t think there is anything waterproof with this much down for the price. When I shovel snow in balmy Denver by comparison (at 25F), a T-shirt underneath will do just fine. I’m 6 ft tall and 165# and the large fits well and allows me baselayers and fleece underneath. The jacket also compresses nicely in luggage.
