Based on the aesthetics and performance of the Gi pants I purchased over 4 years ago, the Gi IV pants are a disappointment. The sizing is bazaar. Large is very tight and XL is very loose. The material is heavy and does not breathe.
These pants are not everyone's style, but I absolutely love them. Besides the adjustment at the waist, there are also draw strings on each pant leg making it easy to slide them up when you're crossing a creek or if it's hot out. They are baggy around the thighs so you have ample range of motion. I have used these pants for running, climbing, hiking, traveling, (break dancing!) and just lounging around. One of my favorite features of them is that they are so versatile--there are a whole slew of pants available for outdoor use, but they are really only each intended for one purpose. These are pretty rugged and are good for just about everything except interviews and swimming. I inherited a hand-me down pair of pants very similar these that were about 30 years old when I finally retired them. The design here looks robust and the material looks to be of equal quality. Looking forward to wearing these on adventures for the next many years.
I have another pair of Patagonia pants in size large, but had to buy these in XL. I usually wear size 34-36 jeans, depending on the cut. I can't speak to the Gi IV's durability, just make sure you try them on. The fabric feels nice, especially after I washed and dried them. I like how the back pockets have snaps to help retain items, and the zippered thigh pocket is a nice bit of added security. I think the stretch fabric and integrated belt will make these my go-to pants for air travel.
Pants are very comfortable, love the material and construction. They are slightly long for me. I wear 36 x 32, and these are slightly too long. My main complaint is that the belt buckle is made of cheap plastic. After one wash, it fell off the pants and was lost in the laundry. Now I have to tie the belt to keep my pants around my waist. Would prefer a traditional belt-loop option for these pants.
