Is it production consistency that kills this?
Probably the best filter for 1 - 2 person backpacking this side of $200. Unfortunately it has fatal flaws. I have had two of these now. The first had the intake quick disconnect pop out. No broken plastic, just the glue/epoxy "let go". The second was misshapen at the top where the filter screws in. So there was never a good tight seal and it leaked water the whole trip on North Manitou. Lot's of good reviews for this filter. I want it to work and last. There just isn't another that matches it's weight, pumping speed, field service, or form factor in this price range.
Bulletproof and Rapid Filtration
This thing is a tough, effective, and quick filtration system! I'm not sure what has caused so many negative reviews, but I have had this filter for at least five years and have never had an issue! It has filtered every type of water from Sequoia/Kings Canyon, to the Timberline Trail in Oregon, to the Wind River Range in Wyoming, to Isle Royale in Michigan without issue, breakdown, or any sort of problem. The Nalgene adaptor works incredibly well and the filter can fill a 32oz Nalgene in about a minute, making it perfect for a group of hikers. I highly recommend this filter based on my own experiences, so don't let the negative reviews scare you!
Convenient and fast
I first saw this filter being used by a friend. She just sat down next to a stream, dipped the hose with the float end and operated the pump, filling up 3 bottles in no time, while I, with my "S" brand filter struggled to reach down into the water to dip and fill my collapsible bottles that never want to stay open. That day I was sold on getting one. Three weeks ago I used it for the first time at Long Lake in the Cottonwood area of the Sierras. This time, my "S" filter equipped friends struggled while I filled my and my wife's bottles in no time. I ended up filling all our bottles for the rest of that trip because this pump was so much faster.
Easiest water filter I've used
I got this water filter on accident but turned out to be the best mistake ever. My friend had a version of the same filter but it wasn't the Hiker Pro. From what I understand, the Hiker Pro is lighter and has easier attachments for bladders. I was able to pump some pretty silty water(which was crystal clear after the pumping) directly into my 3L capacity bladder in less than 2 mins. It even has the wide-mouth connector if you need. Pretty awesome!!! Clean up is super easy also. Just pump some water with a little bleach and take it apart to air dry.
Nectar from the Gods
This Katadyn filter works wonders. I used it on a 40 mile segment of the PCT and had zero issues. From a product assembly aspect, the instructions could have been a little better. Even if you lost them, however, putting the whole thing together was rather straight forward. I filled water bottles with this Katadyn, but it can provide easy solution hook up to an Osprey backpack camelbak without removing the bladder. The only true improvement I'd suggest lies in the weight. My kitchen scale has the pump and attachments showing 14oz. If it were wet, the filtration device probably comes in at exactly 1lb. Functions as intended though!
Intake valve breaks off easily
The second time we used the filter, the intake nozzle snapped off. The filter was not dropped or stressed in any way. We were filtering from a pristine creek. The intake valve is held by a thin layer of epoxy/glue, so it is not at all surprising that it is so flimsy.
This is a lifesaver
My kids and I did the Dismal pass at Caesars Head in late July. We thought we brought enough water. We did not. It was horrible. Especially seeing how we were walking by water a majority of the time. This is when I decided to buy a filter system. I did my research. I talked to friends. I talked to other hikers. I absolutely love this filter. I’ve had it for a year now and I haven’t had any of the complaints that I’ve seen others talk about. I love that I can disconnect my reservoir at the quick connect and plug this filter in and fill up my reservoir without taking off my pack. And to me, nothing tastes better than icy cold filtered stream water.
Solid Choice
I used this for 35 days/500 miles backpacking on the Colorado Trail. Pros: Never doubted the quality of the filtered water this produced. Cons: Packed size, filter life. This filter is rated for many hundreds of liters before needing replacement. I got less than 50 liters filtered before the pump became challenging to press. I followed the trouble shooting directions, which indicated that the issue was a clogged filter, the only solution to which is to replace the filter. Bottom Line: I still recommend this product, because the water produced is unimpeachable. But still disappointed in such a highly rated product that was supposed to last much longer than that.
Bring a Backup, Katadyn Pump will Break
I used this Katadyn pump in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area last week. As others noted, mine broke during the second day. The black intake port broke off from the clear plastic where the two pieces come together. The break was so clean, where there is some kind of molding seam or where the parts are joined. I had an older version from the same company that was used for several years without issue. This newer one is made of a less sturdy plastic and is not up to the task without careful handling. I had to boil water for the next three days. Very frustrated and disappointed in the Katadyn pump.
Hands down best option for groups
I have to write this review because I can't believe the ratings here. I have owned and used the same Katadyn Hiker Pro water filter since 2006, and it has never failed me and always provided me safe, clean, and great tasting water, even from some questionable sources. If you are hiking solo, it is probably more than you need and a little cumbersome. Better options exist. However, if you are in a group and sharing the water filtration, I can't think of a better option. You can filter large amounts of water in a very fast amount of time. I recently did a 4 day backpacking trip in the rockies with my family of 4, and my same hiker pro from 2006 was able to quickly fill 4-6L of water at a time with ease and without fail.
