Could be stickier but overall good
Trying out some dessert for when we go camping. I used a little less water than what was recommend as from previous Backpacker's Pantry meals tend to be a little on the wet side.. After the first half of cooking, all the water had been absorbed and I added a a tad more water (still less that max amount). After the last half of cooking, looked good, didn't seem to have that full sticky rice look, but I mean its a camping meal. Taste wise, there are bits of coconut and mango throughout each bite. There will always be other desserts out there, good to see that there will be more options to choose from.
Easy to cook and very tasty!
I brought this with me on a chilly fall hike so I could enjoy something warm while enjoying the view. It was just me, so I was easily able to pre-measure ingredients and cook in my stove. The instructions for how much water to add were for the whole package, so I had to do some math but that was fine. Because the bag is resealable I saved the rest for another hike. It cooked up easy and quick and surprised me how tasty it was! Not too sweet. Hit the spot on a windy, chilled day in the North Cascades.
Mango sticky rice
Took it to a cabin up in Big Bear, easy to make most definitely. It was took sweet for my taste and gets cold after 2nd closing of pouch. Reheated when I got home and added onions and much better the 2nd time!
This is NOT mango sticky rice!
no, no, no, no, no, no, NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! This is NOT mango sticky rice. It’s a savory salty turmeric curry rice. Save yourself, your palate, and your money!
Tasty enough to try once
Just like my title says, it is tasty and interesting sounding enough to try once but I wouldn't try it again. The mango flavor is pretty much overpowered by the coconut. The smell is also pretty much just coconut too. The coconut flakes that were used to flavor the meal also added an undesirable texture to the meal. The black sesame seeds added no noticeable difference to the meal. The meal is also at the lowers end of calories at 570 calories and the 8 grams of protein leaves much to be desired. Overall, I would not pick this one up again. If you like coconut, then this might be a meal for you. Also, because of the low protein and low calories it provides, it might serve better as a breakfast item.
Great taste - but fairly low on calories.
At 570 calories per package and 2 servings in the package that is only 285 calories per serving. That is about the same as most trail/snack bars and certainly not enough for a backpacking meal. I always taste test meals before I actually use them in the field. And I have to say this is a very tasty dish. However, to address the low-calorie issue I set aside part of the meal to modify with some additional ingredients while staying in the Asian-Pacific sort of theme. By adding some teriyaki jerky and/or freeze dried meat, almond meal, and coconut milk powder, I estimate I at least doubled the calories while still having a savory and light-weight meal. My recommendation is to add your own ingredients to bolster the calories or use two of these packets for a single meal.
Not as good as expected, but not bad
I followed the directions exactly (add boiling water, stir, wait 8 minutes, stir again, wait 7 minutes) so of course those 15 minutes felt like an eternity when you are hungry, but it was simple enough. We didn't bother with dishes - made in the bag, eaten in the bag! It would be nice to have a fill line so you don't have to bother with measuring the water. My first impression was that it was actually pretty yummy, but it does taste watered down and not milky/creamy like you would expect. The rice also seemed a little tougher and less sticky than it should be; I waited the full time and the water was boiling hot so I'm not sure if waiting a little longer would have helped? My husband remarked that he would eat it again while camping but wishes it had more spices. I agree that in general, it's a little bland but pretty filling.
terrible
Just cooked this tonight. First of all, it uses the wrong type of rice. With long grain instead of short grain, you don’t get the proper level of starch to actually make it sticky (think of this more like rice soup). Then comes the flavor. It’s bland at best, and really left me disappointed. I’ve had a lot of really good freeze dried meals on the trail, but this one was so disappointing that my friends at camp immediately asked how bad it tasted when they saw my face after the first bite. I muscled it down because I needed the calories, but I’ll never bring this with me again. There are so many better options. Buy something different!
Not Mango Sticky Rice - Should be renamed.
This is not mango sticky rice. I understand that freeze dried food is always a little bit different than you expect, but this was horrible. It tasted more like coconut curry rice with sour gummy bits of mango in it. I bought this expecting a dessert and it was more of a dinner meal due to the lack of sweetness and lack of mango flavor. To top it all off the rice wasn't even sticky! I've previously had the backpacker's pantry Creme Brulee, Chana Masala, and Three Cheese Macaroni and all of those were great.
Could be sweeter
Making it was easy and simple like all of Backpackers Pantry items are, however, with this being a dessert, I expected it to be sweeter than it turned out to be. The rice on its own was a bit bland despite the coconut powder, turmeric, and black sesame seeds in it; none of those flavors were tasted while eating this. The flavor of the rice came across as more of a suggestion of those flavors. The mango chunks added the sweetness to the dessert I was expecting, turning it from a pretty bland rice into something sweet and yummy. If more coconut powder or chunks were added, this could be a great coconut rice with mango chunks in it kind of dessert. Also, despite the name, this is just regular rice with some powders added in, it is not sticky rice. Overall, did not live up to my expectations of it, and left me disappointed with what I actually received. I had high hopes as all the other desserts I've tried from Backpackers Pantry have been a hit.
