Miserable engineering
This seemed to be the best idea when I looked it over in the store. It fits my water filter, and packs down nicely. However, regardless of how finger tight I tried to tighten the top (small) cap, it leaked. All over the contents of my pack the night prior to a climb! A couple hours in the motel laundry and all was dried out. Fortunately I found a small silicone gasket at the trailhead which fit a water bottle cap, and I used that with success. That speaks to the short sighted engineering (or accounting) of whoever at MSR who thought this was a good idea to omit o-rings. Letter to them in in the works.
MSR left me disapointed again
With the exception of my MSR stove I continue to be disappointed. The bag has a funny taste. The original cap leaked after a year or two. The replacement cap I bought for it works but it is annoying with the string they attached. This year some how a 1" slice appeared in the bag. not sure if I did it on a sharp rock or it just split on it's own. Either way I won't buy this bladder again. The new design looks to be difficult to hang with no point of attachment on top where the older version has one. I reached out to MSR last year on another matter related to my MSR water filter and they didn't even respond. So hence I'm looking elsewhere for my purchases now.
Bomber & worth the effort to prepare for service.
Tough as nails and 100% worth the money and effort to prepare this tough bag for your service. Here's the 2 things to do regarding that brand new taste and smell. 1.) Baking soda and lime. Let it sit in the direct sun a full day (or more) then rinse out 2.) Take the darn lid completely off and hang it outside and leave it outside for a week or more if you can. Your new bag will not have any funky taste or smell. It's like new anything that has been manufactured from multiple materials, it needs to air out! We took this back-packing and it was so helpful and you can just throw it up on the granite rocks or hang it on a pine tree with not one worry!
The bag is pretty good but the cap is a total loser
I've bought several over the years and I will not buy another. First the old bags have a slightly different thread so the new caps don't fit properly they leak. It is sad that MSR doesn't back their older products, part of the throw away culture. The bag gives a chemical taste so I use it for washing. The old bag had an on off nozzle like a spigot which is not made any more. It was very useful for filling a pan with water, rinsing etc. Now all they have is a tiny spout or risk the entire bag empting on you, very ineffective especially if you hang the bag. What used to be a product I enjoyed using is now something I will never buy again.
Working great, as expected
Absolutely no spillage, wich was my fear from reviews. Quite rugged, no surprises having it resting on the soil and dirt, but always handled with care. The particular plastic taste indeed wears off after several -several- uses. I washed it lot of times before first use alternating sodium bicarbonate and vinegar solutions, wich I think helped. I use the smallest spout cap to release air when half full to reduce overall volume and reduce air bags inside. One thing I would like to know is if there is some official guidelines or tips for long term storage of the bag between outdoors seasons. The manual or the web doesnt give any clues regarding that topic.
Heavy duty waterbag
I have used the 4L bag now for approx 4 years without any issue, the 3-in-1 cap gets worn over time but is still functioning witout any problem or leak. The rest of the bag is as good as new. Two minor thinks that might have to be considered: 1. Then trying to dry the bag something needs to put in to allow it to dry completely. 2. The bag is black. Together with sunsine the water in it will get quite warm. This can be good or bad depending on the situation. In genereal I actually like this so I can double-use it as a solar-shower bag :) Most of the time when using that bag I do cycle tours and attach it on top of my rear bicycle rack. Definitive a ""would-by-again""
Fantastic water container with one caveat.
I love this bag, but be forewarned that you may have to work on the small cap. I took my new 4L Dromedary on a two night trip in the Guadalupe Mountains this last weekend and unfortunately it leaked from the seam made by the small cap's mating surface with the large cap. I lost approximately a liter of water and had to watch my already rationed water supply a bit more closely. For a bit, I thought that this seam was supposed to be the the sealing surface and that it wasn't flat enough to allow the necessary seal. When I returned home, I sanded the open face of the small cap until it was flat, reinstalled it, and to my dismay the seam still leaked. After studying the cap for a few minutes, I realized that I was looking at the situation wrong; the sealing surface is where the inner small cap meets the top of the threaded portion of the large cap. The real problem is that the small cap was too deep to allow those two surfaces to meet. I simply took a Dremel and sanded off a bit more of the open face of the small cap to make it shallower so that the two aforementioned sealing parts now meet, confirmed by the fact that there is now a gap in the original seem that I thought was the sealing surface. After filling the Dromedary again and putting on the caps, I put a great deal of my weight on the bag and wa-la, no leak. One shouldn't have to work on an expensive piece of gear to get it to perform as it was intended to do, but, all frustrations aside, the Dromedary bag is the most rugged water container that I have seen for its weight. I am not willing to send it back and go to something else, but I do hope that MSR sees my review and fixes the problem for future buyers. I have since seen where other buyers have the same apparent problem that I did. I hope that they, too, see this and decide to repair their otherwise great piece of gear.
Cap options
This water carrier is incredible. It’s durable, practical, versatile, I wanna but 3 more. But I have a silly issue with the cap. The little spout is useless. Takes forever for the water to run out. When you try to unscrew to the medium cap, water sprays out everywhere. I have a silly plastic water carrier from your local hardware store that has a fantastic nozzle about 14mm in diameter and a rotating tab for almost tap-like use. If I could purchase a separate cool cap for this product I would throw the other product out in a second. As a result I’m only using using the dromedary as a backup water source.
A good bag, a bit leaky from nozzle, pro tip for flavor
I would have given 4-5 stars if it came with a couple caps, one with the nozzle for use at basecamp, and one that completely seals the drom for putting in your pack or something. The little nozzle that flips up seems to be a common leak point for these MSR Droms. Its useful for drinking straight from the drom but for little else since it fills water bottles quite slowly. Why not include a solid cap for secure stowing? Also a tip for the plastic-y flavor: before first use, fill the drom with water mixed with baking soda and let it sit for a bit. Then empty and rinse thoroughly for a more neutral flavor.
the lid leaks.
The lid leaked the first time out. No amount of tightening could fix it. After hiking in, I spent the following 6 hours drying out my gear so I wouldn't get hypothermia overnight. And then I had to figure out a new strategy for getting water to camp. Few reviews mention this problem, so maybe I got a lemon. But I don't trust this product at all.
