Light and sticky
These shoes have great traction and excellent grip on rock. The "VT" stands for vertical terrain and I found these shoes excellent for Sky Running across rock slabs and scrambly ridge lines. I use these shoes for approaching climbs too and they climb well with a uniques lacing system that allows you to tighten-up the forefoot and improve edging. On the descent you can run or speed hike down since you are wearing a running shoe. The heel toe drop is moderate. Its not a minimalist shoe by any means but it definitely keeps you lower to the ground than a traditional shoe. Support is good with an inner sock piece around the ankle that adds proprioception and helps prevent rolled ankles.
Great walking, hiking, and trail running shoes
Overall great shoes. They have a quick wear in period that is best accomplished by wearing thick hiking socks. I wear these every day and they are the comfiest shoes I own. Super grippy in snow, ice, rain, and dirt and clean easily. They are fairly water resistant, but the shoes will soak through if you go trudging through snow for more than a few meters.
Inferior to 2019 Norvan VT 2
The Norvan VT 2 (2019) has been a great 8mm drop trail to complement my ASICS Nimbus road shoe. Sadly, the clearance “VT 1” is an inferior predecessor. Wore once while doing errands. Now my feet hurt. Terrible. Wait for the VT2 to go on sale. $170 SRP but occasionally 25% off
