I bought this as a larger day pack for when I'm doing "cool hiking uncle" duties and need to carry extra items for the kids. It's a pretty simple pack - top loading, usable hip belt pockets, side water bottle pockets, and a large front pocket. I appreciate the simplicity. I also appreciate the adjustable torso length that allows you to really dial in the fit. I also love the hydration sleeve that is on the outside of the main compartment. This makes it really easy to refill a bladder at a water source without having to unpack the pack or risk wetting the contents. I liked this pack so much that I bought the 22 liter version for solo day hikes when i don't need to carry stuffed animals and Cheerios.
Typical excellent Osprey quality. Only 4 ounces more than the Talon 22 so provides 50% more capacity at negligible additional weight. Even if you think you don't need the capacity, it was nice not to have to force jam my expensive down shell into a tiny pack. Used it on long day hikes in Wrangell Nat. Park for a week and it was very comfortable. Weighs less than the Stratos which I had also looked at. Waist belt pockets more trim than on Stratos line and my arms did not rub against waist belt when walking which was the case for me with the Stratos. Really nice pack overall.
Genius move on Osprey's part to put the hydration pocket outside of the backpack itself. It fits perfectly in the frame. The rest of the pack is loaded with pockets, straps and other good stuff. The frame is comfortable and secure. There is a little whistle on the chest strap that is conveniently placed for annoying fellow hikers. This pack is awesome. No regrets, except from my companion who had to listen to me test-driving the whistle.
I bought this a couple months ago and have used it on two recent climbs, one on Baldy and the other on Whitney. Worked excellent on both occasions. Pack has plenty of room for any day hike where warming layers are needed and has shown no signs of wear so far. Would recommend a smaller pack if cold weather wasn't an issue.great piece of gear.
This is the best backpack I've ever owned. I tried all the REI branded ones and found this one more convenient and way more comfortable than any REI pack. Took it on a two week backpacking (in the mountains, not cities) trip to Tour de Mont Blanc and it performed spectacularly. I customized my top pouch by adding a couple of extra clips to it so the whole top can come off easily. This way you can make it more "ultralight", but also if you have your phone, kindle, whatever else, you can clip all that stuff off and bring it into the tent with you easily.
Awesome pack, and it fits under the seat as a personal item on the flights!
Only been on one hike but pack has great compartments and zippers, comfortable on back, and a little more room than typical day pack. Recommend.
I am a novice who did a 19 hour hike with a full pack. It weighed about 17 pounds. The pack fit perfectly and was extremely comfortable. It was slightly hard to keep organized.
Had it for a couple of years. Never let me down climbing, skiing, hiking, or biking. Best pack I've ever owned.
I got this pack to use as a daypack on longer hikes. And for that use, it is nothing short of awesome! One of the very best attributes of this pack is its light weight. At a little under two pounds (for the S/M version), it is actually LIGHTER than many 20 liter packs. Yet, it has SO much more room for extra layers, food, water, water filter, and anything else you might carry with you on a 15+ mile dayhike. But even if you don’t completely fill it up, it is MUCH more comfortable than a 20 liter pack that is stuffed to the brim. The extra compartments are nice as well. I particularly like the small compartment on the shoulder strap for a flashlight and the small compartments on the waist straps. These free up space in your pants pockets and allow you to carry things without rubbing on your legs. As far as durability, it is hard to say at this point how it will last since I have only taken it out a couple of times. But if it lasts at least a season, it is a winner as far as I’m concerned.
