Another Great Osprey
I am 73 years old and have been playing this hiking game for over 60 years so, I speak with just a little experience behind me. Of the five packs I own three of them are Osprey; 60L, 38L and this, the Talon 22L. The construction, comfort and adjustability are excellent which relate to both a durable backpack and a very comfortable carry in the 12 to 20 lb range. I do find that on this pack that the water bladder is a better choice than carrying water bottles. The Platypus 3L bladder is a perfect fit and rides very flat for comfortable, convenient carry. If 3 liters is too much weight just don't fill it all the way up. Easy. I do highly recommend the Osprey Talon 22.

Every hip belt needs a good internal frame
It's really difficult to make a low-volume pack with a hip belt for a tallish person. The hip belt is great for transferring loads to the hips, but it needs a relatively stiff backpanel to keep the load well controlled, and the back panel needs to be fairly tall for hiking comfort...and to let the load lifters work properly. The Talon 22 is a very sophisticated pack with a lot to offer. I really wanted to like it, but was stopped by its too-floppy back panel. Laterally rigid but vertically flexible, with 10 lbs distributed throughout the lower 2/3 of the bag I could feel the pack pulling backwards on my shoulders as the upper 1/3 of the bag bent outwards. By comparison, a semi-rigid framed daypack like the Stratos 24, Gregory Z30, or Patagonia Nine Trails 20 or 28 are much more comfortable for a long day on the trail. They're also higher volume and heavier, which points out the really tough design tradeoffs a bag manufacturer has to make at this bag size. The Talon 22's great feature set and fitting comfort encourage overloading. Consider this a short-trip, 8-10 lb load pack at most.

Beautiful Backpack

This backpack is wonderful. I use it for hiking and day-to-day activities; really, I bring it with me everywhere I go. I first tested out by filling it with as many heavy things as I could, e.g., my laptop and textbooks, and summited a nearby mountain with the pack feeling comparatively weightless. I am rather small, but the pack fit me perfectly and required no adjustments. The hip belt pockets are wonderful and I've had no trouble opening them with one hand while moving. I ran the last quarter mile of my hike and found the pack to remain pretty stable, though I wouldn't go for a run with it. 10/10 Osprey never disappoints.

Better than I imagined

I was eyeing this backpack for about a year before purchasing it. It seemed pricey, but once it went on sale I decided it was finally time to buy. I had heard great things, and now about a month of using it, I LOVE it. I bought the men’s though I am a women because I liked the color choices better. I use this backpack for field work where I work outside 10 hours/day. I need to carry 3+ L of water, a full days worth of food, and equipment. This bag does it all! There are so many handy pockets to organize my stuff and the hip-straps keeps this bag comfortable with several pounds of gear inside. Would very much recommend it to anyone- totally worth the $

Almost perfect

This is a great pack, and a good replacement for my >12 year old daypack that was falling apart. Pro's: - easy to attach your hiking poles to either one of the straps if you're not using them - comfortable fit, both for me, being 6'7" as well as for my 5'9" better half. - perfect size for a day pack, with ample room, even for an overnight hike Con's: - waist pockets are unreachable with the pack on. And due to their position, relative to the shoulder straps, the zipper is extremely hard to fully open while wearing the pack. - no rain cover - just one zipper pocket on the inside of the main compartment.

I'm a woman, I like this men's pack

I'm a woman and I love this men's pack (sm/m - I'm 5'3" size 16). It's my first pack so I don't really have any comparisons. I went in-store and just started trying on EVERYTHING (with the generous help of an associate). I even tried really hard to like something cheaper since I'm just getting into hiking and don't want to break the bank. At the end of it all, this one just felt the best, with and without weight. I've been on a couple short day hikes and it worked well, comfortable the whole time, easy to use with my hydration bladder. I also use it during the week for work and my laptop fits nicely too. No regrets on this purchase.

Worked Great for Half Dome

I purchased this a few months ago to use when hiking Half Dome, which I did last week. The more I use this pack the more I like it. It was a great size for Half Dome and easily carried a full 3L bladder, an additional 64 oz. of water, plus food and other gear for the hike. The weight was distributed well off of my shoulders and onto my hips. On other day hikes in the Sierras I included a collapsible fishing pole and a pro-level DSLR with a couple of lenses and never had an issue with fitting it with everything else I needed or the pack being uncomfortable.

Pretty good - could be better

Pluses: This is very comfortable pack to carry, of a good size for most day hikes. Minuses: 1. The strap system for both shoulder and waist straps seems needlessly complex and of questionable utility. 2. Water bottles can easily slide out of the side pockets. No closure. 3. Hard objects can easily slide out of the big back pocket - no closure. 4. The top pocket is of a good size and accessibility, but takes away room from the internal main compartment of the pack. Besides the two small hipbelt pockets, It is, however, the only "safe" pocket accessible from the outside of the pack. 5. The pocket on the shoulder strap is too small to be of much use.

My first high quality day pack

I have about 30 miles miles of trails with this pack so I feel I can give a decent initial review. So far I am very happy with my purchase. The Talon 22 is very comfortable on the shoulders and hips with the average amount of gear needed for a day in the mountains. Lots of pockets, webbing, and rings to get very creative with your packing. I used a 70 oz hydropack I picked up off Amazon for $15 with great success. I was a little leery about the way hiking poles are held to the pack but it has worked out great so far . The 22 liter size is perfect for long day hikes but I'd want a larger pack for over night adventures. Really cant go wrong with the Talon 22

My commuter pack

I go through several stages with small packs. I start my loading them lightly and then decide gradually how little I can do without through my workday. So far the Talon 22 has swallowed and carried everything I've put in, comfortably. Construction seems high quality and materials well-chosen. I probably could have gotten it cheaper elsewhere or online, but you've got to support local brick-and-mortar stores, don't you? I'm worried, since this was the only Talon 22 at my local REI, that this may be headed for "discontinued." Hope not, because you should try it on.

great day pack...amazing company

This is my go to day pack. I used it for everything from day hiking in Joshua Tree to commuting to work. The only problem I have had with the pack is that I was without it for a month. I was driving through Alabama early one morning when I heard a loud thump, and my dog barked. I looked up in my rear view mirror and saw that my Talon 22 flying through the air. I quickly pulled over and hopped out of the car, it was then I noticed that my roof box was open. In my haste to get an early start I had not ensured that it had been properly closed. I jogged down highway 20 and there is was laying on the asphalt, shew what a relief. It was a little banged up, no big deal. I was about sprint over and pick it up when I saw a white work van coming around the curve, and then it happened BOOM a direct hit on my pack, it was more then a little banged up to say the least. There was nothing but a single contact lens that survived. I drove on to Louisville Kentucky where I stayed with some family. The following evening I called Ospery support to explain to them what happened. I told them that I did not think the pack could be repaired, and explained the folly/misfortune in Alabama. They ask me to mail the pack to them and follow up with an email, a week or so later I was contacted by Osprey support. They informed me that the pack could not be repaired. BUMMER! I was ready to go out and purchase a new talon 22. It was then I was told I would need to pick out a color for a new Talon 22. Wait? What? The all mighty guarantee covered even my stupid mistake and my new Talon 22 goes everywhere with me. I don't normally provide reviews, however due to the quality of this product and the all mighty guarantee I will not purchase a pack from another company.
