Versatile adventure bike
Bought 2 Salsa Woodsmokes (his and hers) as a ride that could do both challenging single tracks and bikepacking trips, which are typically mixed double/single track and gravel grinding for us in the southeastern US. In summary, it does both very, very, well. For single track, it’s quick, cuts well, and rolls when you need it to. There is some adjusting your climbing position due to the short chainstays, but overall, very fun and easy to handle. For bikepacking, we rigged it with a Salsa front bag, a custom framebag, PDW Brindle rack with dry bags, and a jerry and gas tank bags. We did an 8 day trek, and the bike was solid, reliable, and comfortable. It performed well in wet packed gravel and sand, and rolled well on the trail, and was a pretty plush ride. The NX1 11- speed system works well and is nicely spaced, and wheels and hubs are solid and have taken all the beating we’ve given them. Brakes are adequate, and we’ve upgraded to thudbuster seat posts, tubeless, new seats, and Ergon grips. With these mods, it’s a really nice performing all-rounder that is comfortable in a wide range of applications. We have no regrets in this purchase after 6 months of use. I think Salsa achieved their design goal on this one; a versatile, high performing and comfortable do-everything adventure bike.
So far disappointing
I decided on this bike for versatility, but components have frustrated me. The wheels are tubeless ready, but it comes with Nobby Nics that are not tubeless friendly. I was unable to get them set up tubeless until I got some tubeless friendly tires and then they were relatively easy. The WTB stock seat is one of the worst mountain/road seats I have ever seen. It literally came off the rails in less than 10 rides and I am NOT an aggressive rider at all (ie I never "get air"). The rest of the bike seems ok. If I can only keep it working (the down time to get tubeless set up working was on the order on 6 weeks or so).
