Temperature ratings are intended as a guideline to help you compare products, rather than a guarantee of warmth, since many different factors contribute to your comfort while you sleep. Our backpacking bags are rated for temperature according to an independent testing protocol: International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 23537. Testing is based on a person wearing one base layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38.

Each bag then gets 2 ratings: the Comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "cold sleeper" comfortable, and the Lower Limit rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "warm sleeper" comfortable. For REI Co-op brand nongendered sleeping bags, we provide an overall temperature rating that falls between the Comfort and Lower Limit ratings.

I love this sleeping bag, I bought it with the sister bag magma 17 women's thinking that it would be perfect for zipping together and making a nice double bag for my wife and I. I wasn't impressed with the way that these fit together and the zippers kept on unzipping throughout the night. I love this sleeping bag for its standalone purposes. It's nice and warm/comfortable, very compact and extremely light. It does slip around quite a bit because of the soft outer fabric. I am curious if this bag will be too warm this summer as this is really made for shoulder seasons and since I am in British Columbia it might be just perfect. Great price for a 850 down bag. Nice work REI!

Great Quality Bag, Several Drawbacks In Design

TL,DR: Not as warm as advertised, so buyer beware, but still a great bag if you can get over that. I would rate it at 20 degrees instead of 10, which is also what Outdoor Gear Lab decided, meaning that the comfort limit is right at 32 degrees. On nights that were below freezing, I started waking up chilly. This bag is very well made, and for the price/weight/warmth is a great deal. However, in order to achieve this REI had to make some compromises. I took it on a 5 day backpacking trip in the smokies in late February, with lots of rain and snow and nighttime temps getting down to the low 20s at higher elevation. Based on that, these are the shortcomings I could identify: -Instead of full zipper baffles, a stiff piece of excess fabric folds down over the zipper, insulating it with the down from the main part of the sleeping bag. This works pretty well for the most part, but I found that it would open up if I spread out and stretched the bag horizontally. This made me really cautious about laying any way but straight and narrow in the bag on the colder nights. -Variable baffle spacing sounds great in theory, but in practice it left me with cold legs in the lower temps that made the bag feel less warm overall than it was, even when I was overheating around my head and shoulders. I wish the down/baffles were evenly distributed through the bag - that said, for a minimalist backpacker, a down jacket zipped up around the foot box could probably make up for the difference. -The draft collar was the least impressive part. Because the zipper curves up towards your face, the draft collar covers your right side very well but stops several inches short on the left, leaving a grapefruit sized hole in draft protection. I definitely noticed cold air flowing through here and had to plug it with extra clothes to stay warm, which was really annoying and seemingly an obvious issue. If not for this I would have given the bag 4 stars, in spite of the temperature rating issues. -This is my first down sleeping bag, but it seemed somewhat clammy/nonbreathable in comparison to the synthetic bags I've used in the past. Not sure whether that's the treated down, the pertex fabric, or just the temperatures. -The down seemed a bit underfilled, so I had to be careful of not pressing on any of the exterior walls of the sleeping bag for fear of compressing the down. I woke several times to cold spots formed in this way. For reference, I am 24, 6' tall, 165 lbs, probably an average warmth sleeper but I'm lean so I don't have much built-in insulating ability. The regular fit comfortably snug but I got the long to have room for clothes and water bottles in sub freezing temps. Since I'm not likely to go much below freezing in this bag in the future, I wish I would've gotten the regular.

Sleep in a cloud

Compared this one to the igneo 17, and actually liked a few features on the igneo better. It has waterproof material on the sides, feet, and hood, and I liked the zipper/neck collar configuration a bit better. In the end, I bought this bag because it is extremely comfortable, and quite a bit warmer for it's weight. I haven't been disappointed. Nit pick: stuff sack is the same material as the shell of the bag, which makes it light and water resistant, not waterproof. I would rather carry an extra ounce or two of weight to get a waterproof stuff sack.

Keeps you warm but won't last

I bought the bag in May, excited about the features and bang for my buck. The bag did keep me warm and it was pretty light, but it has a severe achilles heel that should be made aware of. I used it for about 60 nights at my job throughout the summer, and time after time I noticed holes forming in the fabric with feathers coming out. By the end of the summer, there were about 40 holes with small 1x1" duct tape patches I applied over them. Keep note: I only ever slept in a protected tent, on a sleeping pad (No thorns, needles, etc.). It was also protected in a SealLine Baja bag of thick material when not in use. Over the long term, like even just a few years, this could turn into an easy 100 holes or more. If REI wishes to improve the product, they should put a tougher fabric on the outside.

Easy to move in

Very happy with my new bag! Comfortable, roomy enough to move without sacrificing warmth. Hood is great; neck guard for draft works well. So glad I took the time to check out multiple bags before making this purchase. The Backpacker review was helpful and the REI staff very knowledgeable about the product. Looking forward to years of fun! I bought the mens regular vs the womens' version - I sleep warm and this bag felt very warm in the store. I'm 5'4" and weigh 122.

Excellent Purchase

I have used many high end bags throughout the years and this is my favorite. The zipper is snag free, the fit is snug but still comfortable and the hood fits like a cozy winter hat. Best of all it is relatively light and I have not noticed any loft lost when the outer bag is soaked in condensation. I have used the bag down to 15-20 degrees with an XTherm pad and stayed incredibly warm. Very happy with this purchase!

Lightweight, Warm and did I mention lightweight?

This is an awesome sleeping bag! It was very compact and warm. I am a cold sleeper and I decided to go with a warmer bag and this one caught my eye due to its weight-1 lb 13oz. I only slept in ~25F weather but I was always warm, as compared to my 20F ba at the same temperature. Super soft lining and great cushion around the head. I had no issues with the width, though I am small, and I was able to roll around in it with ease.

OUTSTANDING! Bag of the year!!

I hike and backpack camp in the Rocky Mountains. Year round and alone. Only my second full winter here and still learning winter mountain camping I’ve made some mistakes. Gear has to be reliable. This sleeping bag is extremely light and compact and very warm. It is also very roomy and I easily move and toss and turn as is my sleeping style. An absolute must if you want to be warm in freezing temps. Also I recommend a good bag liner and insulated sleeping pad. My last bag was The Furnace by Northface. I froze that bag anywhere under 35 degrees. This bag I’ve been out in 10degrees tent camping alone on top of a foot of packed snow and stayed toasty warm. See pic. First Night Review

Just bought my bag yesterday and was anxious to try it out right away. Last night was 15 degrees and clear sky, so I slept out under the stars on my deck. I wore base layer and beanie and slept on top of a Thermarest SOLite pad. Needless to say I was warm all night. Very happy with my purchase and can't wait to to get this bag inside my pack and be on the trail.
