Toasty gloves
Full disclosure, I talked my mom into buying these gloves for me. The $150 price was a shock to me but not her. She said, if you want quality gear, it’s not cheap. It’s been 5 weeks of consistently wearing these in 30 to 9 degree windy Alaskan temps and they keep my hands toasty. Do I get tons of compliments on them, absolutely! They have a super luxurious inner liner and external leather outer. Would I wear them chopping wood or working on my car, heck no. For a fancy, warm weather glove for a bit of coin...these sure are niiiiiice. Thanks ma!
A little of luxury every time you pull these on.
So, while I do feel that these gloves have been poorly marketed, they are really nice. These are part of Hestra's Alpine Pro line, and they are positioned as being appropriate for skiing and snowboarding. I don't see how these gloves could be ideal for that, they are not waterproof and not warm enough for mountain work, but as comfortable, warmish, general purpose gloves for wearing around town, they are really, really nice. Super soft and supple with a comfortable, warm liner, and really robust construction. They feel like an investment piece that will last for many years with a little care. They are beautifully cut with a nice palm size and finger length ratio. They fit, well...like gloves. Snug, but comfortable. They are warm enough for walking around, but I would absolutely not snowboard in them. I've been using them as everyday gloves commuting around Chicago and every time I pull them on, they remind me to appreciate the finer things in life. The leather is so soft, and they are a classy alternative to the standard nylon or stretchy gloves most people seem to wear. Expensive, but not overpriced for the quality.
Nice quality gloves
These gloves are very comfortable and well made. I have only had them for one season but they seem like they will hold up for a long time. They are expensive, but you get what you pay for.
A suprising miss by Hestra
I just can't recommend anyone buy these gloves. These wakayama gloves look really nice and feel good when you put them on in a store but thats about all they're good for. Despite being pretty bulky, they just arent warm. In just 32F weather I cant keep my hands out of my pockets without my hands getting cold. It really doesnt make sense given how bulky the gloves are. They're basically the same warmth level or less as the REI polartec gloves while being 2-3x the bulk and 3x the price.
Major shrinkage
These gloves are very well built, look amazing and lovely to wear, until they get a little wet and then shrink two sizes smaller. Bummer since they’re so expensive. Got 2 pairs because I liked the first one so much, one in the Eco finish and one in brown, and they both did this. Maybe buy 2 sizes bigger? Wish I had returned within the time limit.
Maybe Even Worth It!
Actually bought from Backcountry.com last Winter but it's too difficult to post a review there. These gloves are astonishingly well-made. The leathers and other materials and workmanship are sumptuous and might even be worth the ridiculous price. The removable merino wool liners are buttery soft and warm. I'm only awarding four stars out of five because these won't be magic and keep your hands warm in any and every circumstance just because of the cost.
