Perfect for an icy commute
This was the only studded tire I could find for my Specialized Diverge, which I use for year-round commuting. I was unfamiliar with this brand, and I was worried by the relatively low price. After two seasons with these tires, I can confidently say they've been everything I've wanted for a winter commuting tire. Sure, they can't really do depth of snow, but as long as you can contact the road surface, they're great. There have been several mornings when there's been black ice and I haven't noticed until I stopped and had to put my foot on the ground. Of course, go slowly in treacherous conditions; I'm sure I would have had incidents were I not careful.
Good for nasty Minnesota Winter!
I've only rolled on these for about 20 miles but it's been about 50% heavy rutted ice, 25% sloppy wet but mostly clear street and 25% slippery snowy slush on top of old smooth ice. I've only ridden a few winter seasons. I gave up biking all together in 2014 actually when went over the front and severely separated my shoulder. But I got into electric bicycles this summer and couldn't stop! I was hesitant to start up naturally. My last season on ice was on a Trek mountain bike with massive klondikes. I never had a problem with those. I tentatively attempted road bike studs with klondikes again but never felt comfortable in the road bike position on ice. so those got rusty and have sat for 5 years. My Electric Bike is a Populo V3 and the clearance for the tire didn't allow me to use my trusty old klondikes. The hub bike co-op in Minneapolis carries the Xerxes and recommended them for my low clearance needs. Going online I see SO MUCH HATE for these tires! I have NO idea why! Granted a lot of those reviews are 2+ years old maybe they've changed the design??? I grant you that these do not handle ice ruts lol but NO road bike tire is meant to! They're skinny! They slide down the side of ruts that's just how it is! My electric bike can go a max 20 mph with a regular (slow) cadence. I have these tires pumped to the minimum 35psi... Maybe that's why they grip perfectly for me?? I've grabbed my front and rear brake moderately hard on rutted THICK ice and they stop on a dime. I would 100% recommend these tires to anyone. Granted I've only run them a handful of miles, I've hit probably the worst road conditions you can get (I'm in MINNESOTA remember) so if you know how to handle ice, these will be fine. As always if you grip the handlebars for dear life and don't let your tire guide you through the ice, you're already halfway to a spill. Be safe out there!
Great for Ice
I have a Surly e-LHT-D that I use primarily for hauling home repair materials. I had converted my bike to a front hub motor drive with a 450watt battery system. The reason for the conversion is so that I could use throttle to ride through snow in commutes at a constant speed. With the tires, I found that it made the bike more controllable while standing up, and shifting my body weight to the left pedal to keep the bike from sliding into the curb. The tire is rated to 75 psi, I used 60 psi on commutes, and I haven't had any issues with pinch flats while riding through mush ice, and snow. I also have SKS fenders, and it has plenty of clearance so the studs won't scrap the fenders.
Work Amazing
I have a Trek road bike that I put these one. The barely fit, but they work amazing. I haven't slipped once, even on slick ice. If you can get these to fit on your road bike, I highly recommend. They will keep you upright much better than standard mountain bike tires.
