Not QUITE as advertised
45NRTH's Dillinger 4.0 **120 TPI** tires feature the concave studs, which is what I was after. These (Dillinger 4.0 60 TPI) have standard flat-crown carbides. All in all, it will still be a better ride for ice, than studless fatty rubber, but I thought I would mention that one little thing. I suppose if I'm feeling really squirrelly, I can purchase some concave carbides and swap them out, one of these days. I specifically wanted the 60 TPI for overall toughness, and the concave studs for their surefootedness. It's a shame one cannot find both in the same package. All that said, again, I think this set will do for the icy breakup junk that is gripping the bike paths around my commute. Any traction aide is better than none - just ask my ribs.
45NRTH Dillinger Studded stands up to NH Winter!
I have now spent about 20 hours riding these tires. I have ridden them in the following conditions: fresh snow pack, hard gray ice pack, intermittent ice/snow/NH Granite. I had to select the 4.0 Dillinger since my Trek Farley will not accept a wider tire. Previous to mounting the 45NRTH Dillinger, I was using Surly Nate non-studded tires which worked exceedingly well in everything except pure ice. The 45NRTH Dillinger Studded tire is well worth the money. Great traction on iced-over single track and on snow pack as well. The aggressive tread design is as good as the Surly in soft snow cover. This tire will give you complete traction confidence on the trail. I have lost a few studs, but that is not the fault of the tire design - no studded tire will stand for constant wear (abuse?) over granite rocks. I would recommend these tires to any serious winter fat bike enthusiast!
Fast winter tire
I ride 10 to 15 miles daily on dirt roads with snow and ice. These tires roll great and feel faster than my studded 29er tires. However, they give up a little stability for that speed. With no studs in the center of the tire they tend to slide on hard glare ice, more that my studded 29er tires do
Great winter tires on icy surfaces
I commute to town on icy dirt roads and trails. These tires are amazingly fast (by fat tire standards) and stable.
Fear not the ice!
Great tire for winter fat biking. The tires take command grinding over ice.
Extended Season!
I haven't used studded bicycle tire before but I took a chance on these, hoping to extend my riding season. The traction over ice and packed snow is amazing and I can keep riding my trails throughout the winter. The surprisingly soft compound helps grab the trail and the studs grab everything they touch. They will scratch the heck out of your garage floor, I recommend having a mat down if you have a coated surface. I run them around 10psi in the rear and 8psi up front for optimal traction and ride comfort, the ice can get real choppy if you go too fast. . . . so hold on!
Huge Fan of 45NRTH Dillinger Studded Tires
These tires were a game changer for me. I recently put them on a fat tire e-bike and my confidence level on ice and snow has ratcheted up significantly. Except for the snowiest of days, I am able to fully commute via bike. Cheers to 45NRTH and REI!
Worthwhile purchase
Have installed on my Fat Tire Bike - was an easy swap out - I ride all winter on snow covered, icy back roads, 2 track and some singletrack if the snow isn't too deep. Very satisfied so far and well worth the cost for safety sake.
Good grip on packed icy trail. Easy mounting
Haven’t used them a lot yet but so far I really like them. Rode on hard pack icy trail and they really seemed to grip. Also, very easy to mount tires on rims.
Studded Snow Tire
I got a tire for the back to help with traction on the snow and ice for ice fishing and it has completely made the ride easier and uses less battery on the ice when I pull my sled with my Ranger 1000
