Great Bike
For the price you won't find a better deal. The brakes are wonderful, shifting is easy, handles great and very sturdy but still lightweight thanks to the aluminum frame. Good 1st bike if you're looking to get into trail riding. Took it to Letchworth state park a few times and I can't wait to go back for more! If you're a more experienced rider there's a lot of room to upgrade to suit your needs. I ordered some replacement pedals and larger handlebar grips, stock are good but I have big hands like a wider grip. I'll be getting some new tires once these wear down a bit. Love this bike!
Great beginner bike!
Bought this as a gift for my girlfriend so we could explore some trails together. She is a absolute beginner and this is her first quality bike. She adapted very quickly and we crushed a 10 mile singletrack loop on our first outing. Other than shortening the bars (they are pretty wide) to suit her riding preference the bike has been plug and play.
MTB DUB
Thought I'd never part with my original REI hardtail but then I saw the future, it said 27.5 and Go. I plum forgot about that bike. Can't beat a CO-OP as far as components, performance and price.
Great bike, not only for beginners
I'll start by saying I'm definitely not new to bikes, however I recently decided to move on from BMX to MTB. I recently purchased my Co-op DRT 1.1, and I'm very pleased. In the past two weeks I've put about 45 miles onto the bike on multiple types of terrain, including a lot of single track riding. I just went and rode the single tracks at Riverbends in Michigan today, and am very impressed. It handled all of the trails, small jumps, and log piles with no issue. I did some riding last week in some more sandy loose trails and had some difficulty getting traction from the rear during climbs. The tires are actually pretty decent, however are a hard compound, so don't do great in dry loose terrain. I'll probably order some nicer tires from REI when these wear out a bit. I replaced the pedals with nicer alloy flats that have serviceable pins, and grab much better. The stock pedals are fine, but can get a bit slick when dusty, or wet. Although the current trend is a 1x gear setup, the 3x has been around for a long time and has been tried and trued. I typically just stick in 2nd gear in front and transition between gears in the rear. The other front gears can act as a crank ring protector I guess! Overall this bike is very capable. I'm confident that it'll perform well in just about any trails in South Eastern Michigan where full suspension isn't typically necessary. Although this is likely aimed at beginners, I think you'll be able to start with this and perform upgrades as you progress. Many will probably be able to simply ride this with no changes and do great.
First Bike
This is my first mountain/trail bike. I got to say I am loving it. The 27.5 inch tires are a great size. The shifting is smooth, tires really grip the trail and honestly do all the work. Pedals are plastic and will need to be replaced. One of mine broke while riding around the house. Called my local REI and they replaced them with upgraded XLC pedals free of charge. Great bike with all the essential components to get you going at a Great Price.
Great bike for the price!
I ride bmx and road bikes and have a lot of friends that ride xc and are always bugging me to buy a bike. So I finally found a bike with decent components that fit into my budget. First thing I did was change the pedals. Everything is holding up very well. Bent a brake lever but that's going to happen. Overall I am very happy with the drt 1.1. And would strongly recommend it as a entry level bike!
Fun Bicycle
First day I bought this bike I rode it down Mt. Elden, in Flagstaff, Arizona.. It was extremely durable and handled really well on numerous technical obstacles. It's a fast bike easy to shift and the breaks will slow your speed unhesitantly.
exceptional beginner bike
My wife and I each bought this bike three months ago. We took the Intro to Mountain Biking class at REI (highly recommend it) and loved it. Both of us had avoided mountain biking because of the high cost of entry. But we figured we could get a starter bike for $500 and see how we liked it. We were looking at local bike shops in Denver and were considering the Trek Marlin 5 2017 and the Specialized Pitch 650B 2017. For as much as we shop at REI I didn't think of them for bikes. What made this an easy decision for us was: 1. The hydraulic disc breaks were the only ones we found at this price point 2. REIs 12-month return policy is incredible and made this zero risk 3. We love REI so might as well support them when all bikes we considered were comparable We have ridden A LOT since purchasing them - season passes at Steamboat Springs bike resort, and about 3x per week in Denver. We LOVE our bikes - zero complaints and they've been incredible. I'm not sure what the complaints were about the pedal. We haven't experienced any problems. At this point compared to renting we've got this to about a $5 per use basis if anyone is in a similar, beginner position and thinking about buy vs. rent. Would highly recommend this.
Great first mountain bike
We recently purchased this bike for my 11yo son, and is his first geared and off-road bike. Despite some early concerns about the 27.5" wheels, the size small fits him great and he's able to handle the large wheels with ease. Great quality and materials for the price. I couldn't match this quality anywhere for the same price.
Great bike for the price!
Picked up my CO-OP DRT 1.1 yesterday. A beautiful bike with quality components. Put in some good miles today and I have to say that for a commuter/trail-rider like myself this is an unbelievable ride for only $500. Hydraulic disc-brakes! I'm in love.
