Great device, requires practice
I really love this belay device; it locks easily and reliably, and the stainless steel construction ensures it’ll last a lifetime. It’s great for top rope. I’ve yet to lead belay with it but I’m pretty sure that’s what most people use these for. The only downsides are that because of the steel construction, it’s heavier than my ATC and wears on my aluminum carabiners rather quickly. Also, it requires finesse and a little bit of practice to lower smoothly, but it’s really smooth once you get the hang of it. Because of this though, when I try to share this device with my friends, they usually say they dislike it because they only use it once or twice.
Belaying Simplified and Safe
The Jul2 is perfect for sport climbing. It's light, ergonomic and easy to use. If you are used to using a GriGri it will take a session to get used to the feeding methods but the learning curve is short. I find that there is no slippage when someone is taking on the rope or dogging up a route. Lowering is also smooth and easy to manage. Works great even with the skinniest ropes.
Great Gym Device, Incredibly Smooth Payout
Top rope: This was originally purchased because my wife is so light I have trouble lowering her smoothly on a top rope that's double-wrapped. It works amazingly well for this purpose. The auto-lock feature is quick and effective. While the thumb release takes some getting used to, it was very easy to figure out and it quickly became second nature. Once I showed the auto-lock ability to my wife (I am +65 lbs from her) she immediately began stealing it as she has been dissatisfied with the braking capability of her ATC if I need to hang for any amount of time. It likes to catch while lowering, but like a Grigri you start to feel the 'sweet spot'. Lead: Payout is super easy and smoother than an ATC, just keep your brake hand thumb in the hook and pay out with your other hand. Falling is auto-locking, and it works very well. Lowering on lead is very 'catchy.' I will probably use an ATC belaying my wife when she is leading, but she is planning to use this exclusively.
great sport device
The ropes at my gym are extra thick, so I was having a hard time lowering and paying out slack with my GriGri2 and my Mega Jul. The mouth on the Jul 2 is nice and wide. Even better, paying out slack is almost as easy as an ATC. Outside the gym, this works great for belaying, but runs into some limitations. I wish there were a guide mode for belaying from above and you rappel off of two strands with this device. I would suggest this device as a complement to an ATC or GriGri
My favorite belay device
Smooth and easy action for TR and lead belaying. Handles fat gym ropes and skinny sport ropes equally well. Everybody who borrows it wants one. In my opinion, this is better than the GriGri in every way for single pitch applications.
Best Belay Device!
Incredible for all the reasons above. Excels for single pitch applications, however I would like to add that it is also amazing for multipitch purposes as well. I find when dealing with cramped belay I never accidentally short-rope my partner, in comparison with using a grigri, but still have the added safety of a brake assisted device. It is also half the weight and a forth the cost of a grigri.
I Really Like the Design
My gym required this device or the Gri Gri, and I have been using the ATC-XP for years. I was annoyed that I had to get another belay device but was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this device and how easy it is to control the descent of the climber. I would never use this outdoor since you can't repel off of a double strands with it, but for the gym it's a nice device.
Perfect for the gym
This is perfect for belaying in the gym. I wouldn't use it outside if I had to rappel. But for gym climbing it's perfect. It handles a wider range of ropes and some of the thick ropes that my buddies struggle on with their GigaJuls are handled by this with aplomb. It's just so smooth and light.
Good but a couple issues
I am not a GriGri at all, so always interested in passive braking options I can use at the gym. For top-roping, I like the ATC pilot - comfortable and smooth rope control. I do not like it for feeding out rope to lead belay. I like the full thumb loop on the Jul 2 for easy rope feed, but find the steel hard on the thumb. It needs either more ergonomic shape or padding. When lowering, the steel really heats up - making gloves a necessity.
Autolock works when you don't want it to.
I am really struck by how many people are rating it highly. It works great with stiff gym ropes but with lighter more supple ropes that you use outdoors it is constantly locking on me. I had to return it after two attempts as I couldn't belay a lead climber without constantly short roping him.
