Good idea but they just don’t last.
I love the idea of these tips since it’s hard not to loose a rubber cover every now and again. That being said, these tips just can’t hold up to high miles and rough terrain. Both sets I purchased lasted about 100 miles (maybe less). For the price and durability they’re just not worth it in my book. Maybe they’ll be updated to larger, rubber screw in tips.
They can't handle AZ mountains.
I purchased them August 26, 2017, and started to use them on the 27th. I replaced them August 30, with my carbon tips. I was tempted to ask REI for a copy of my receipt to send Black Diamond as for proof of purchase along with the tips. I don't want the money back nor would I like a replacement set of them either in return. I'm probably not your average hiker, logging 5 plus miles daily using the poles daily. I have completed 2 R3's this year with one month seperation, so I'm probably not average.
No match for northern Penn
I bought two sets of these trekking pole tips before I hiked the northern half of Pennsylvania. These rubber tips were no match for the rocky AT trail of northern Pennsylvania. My hike this year was to finish this 114 mile section of Pennsylvania. By the time I reached Palmerton, these tips were toast. They were worn down to smooth round metal tips that would regularly slip on the rocks. Luckily I had packed a set of carbide tips that held up well to the NJ border. I am giving this item a mixed review because I believe they will work well on a less demanding section of trail. For that reason I will not return the second pair. Perhaps I will use them on the sandy Florida Trail.
Black Diamond trek pole rubber tech tips
I'm about to purchase my third pair of rubber tips. This is after owning the same pair of BD trekking poles for 7+ years. They helped me on 500 miles of Camino France, 400 miles of Camino Portugue, Nakasendo Trail, Kumano Kodo trail and part of Shikoku Island pilgrimage plus trails at home. They were wonderful on the very hard and wet rocks on the Kumano Kodo trail, which I put a lot of weight on the poles because of very steep trails. They are quieter than the metal tips and grippy on rocks. I read another reviewer who also dips the tips in Shoe Glue. May try that.
Wore out after one month
Loved these initially, as no danger of them falling off like the larger tips that you slip over the pole end. However they wore down within a month of purchase. (Did 6 days of hiking in ADK, and a long weekend of hiking in NH, probably probably 80 total miles? I had also purchsed the slip-over rubber tips and placed those on (work great!) and sure enough one pulled off in my last hike. Since they are only $7 to $9 I guess the advice is to buy a few sets and keep replacements on hand. I'm going back to the regular metal tips, with rubber slip on tops (and extras in my pack).
Quieter than carbide but wear out quickly
I started using trekking poles recently and tried several different tips. I also used the poles almost daily in order to get used to the poles and test the different tips available. Of the tips I tried (carbide, larger rubber covers, screw in rubber tech tips) the rubber tech tips wore out in one month with almost daily use.
Bad product description as to compatibility
I bought Black Diamond (BD) Trail Explorer 3 Trekking Poles and BD (screw-on) rubber tips. REIs site said they were compatible with all BD poles and the two exceptions cited did not exclude mine. Not true. REI was most helpful in directing me to the non-screw ones. I spent another $10.99 and tried to return the screw-on ones. As a member, was given options for $5.99 refund delivery or free to store. An REI store is nowhere near me. Not worth it. I explained the problem to REI in my initial query, but no luck. I am out of pocket because of their bad product listing - still has not changed. 3 *s is not about product, but service. Usually, REI is so good.
Not for my kind of hiking
I was eager to try these tips to go with my new BD poles after the associate recommended them. I took them on a 14-mike trek yesterday in the Northeast but wherever the trail got soft these small tips would dig into the ground and occasionally get mildly stuck, forcing me to consciously give it a yank to keep moving. I will be returning to the store for a pair of slip-on rubber grips.
Met my Expectations
I use these rubber tech tips on rocky, desert trails where my poles are put to work on ascents and descents. The tips grip rock surfaces very well, they haven't slipped and they are quite. I have hiked every other day with these tips over the past two months and they have just got to the point of needing replacement. They lasted longer than I expected, considering what I put them through, and performed very well.
Great tips, not acceptable on Inca Trail
Got these to replace my carbide tips when doing the Inca Trail, but was told by our guide that rubber tips are needed, not just plastic. Needed to get the larger, rubber tips that go over the carbide tips instead. Otherwise great product.
