This lift works great
It took me a few hours to reinforce the framing, but It seems to be holding it pretty good. This lifting system does a great job and it gives your garage a great apparience.
Trust me: If I can install it, you can install it.
As others have noted, this is not sized for typical American frame construction; you’ll need some kind of blocking. Their idea seems to be that you can pull into your garage, slip the ropes under and crank it straight up. That may work if you’ve got a swinging door but it you have an overhead door it won’t work unless you have a really high ceiling. Also, the car can’t get out of the garage with the box on top anyhow, so placement wasn’t critical. There are seven points for the lift that screw into the ceiling so I used seven 2-foot long 1x6 boards to be sure to fully span the joists (see pic). Once that was up, you’ll also need 14 more screws (not included) to attach the lift to your blocking. I’d recommend #10s screws appropriate in length for your blocking. String it up, tie the loop shut, and you’re ready to rock and roll. We have about a 10-foot ceiling. The instructions recommend no more than 2 meters (78”) of hanging loop, so fully dropped, the box does not come close to the floor; maybe 4 feet up (see pic). It the rope did slide a bit, pretty much self-leveling the load on we got the box on it. Crank, crank, crank and up it goes no problem. This, BTW, is a Thule Motion XT XXL box and it works perfectly. Bottle line- looks good, not that hard to put up, and gets the job done. Would highly recommend.
Good general recreation hoist
I have two of these to stow my canoe and my kayak above the garage door. I am very pleased with the quality of the product. There is not a great deal of competition in the market, and the steep price is, unfortunately, about the going rate. Installation is not straightforward, and the perfunctory instruction sheet is of only the most basic use. You will have to know the orientation of your joists. If hanging your stuff parallel to the joists, then all of the apparatus must be mounted on boards (1x4 or 2x4) that are then attached to the joists. If perpendicular to the joists, only the center crank mechanism will require a secondary mount. The hand crank handle that comes with the kit is adequate. I have fashioned a hook that I attach go my drill motor to make lifting and lowering less tedious. I would recommend this product to a friend.
Well working hoist
Great hoist for cargo box but takes extra time and wood to install because US framing standards are wider spaced than global standards.
Excellent Product... I'm buying another
I am a female with moderate do-it-yourself ability and installed this myself. Yes, install is a bit extensive, as it requires bracing it to the studs with 1x4's (otherwise doesn't quite span the distance between studs), but the ease and convenience of this product, once it's installed, is worth it. Those who say that it doesn't lift the box evenly must not have properly installed the rope. You have to make sure the lengths on both sides are even before you tie it off. Not that difficult. I have a taped mark on my garage floor that I line up with the X on my rearview camera. Then I can lower the box perfectly onto the roof rack. I can get the box on and off myself without help. Yes, this product is pricey. But it's worth it. I'll be buying another one to hang my kayak and paddle boards.
Great lift kit
Not only does this work well but it looks good too and keeps the big box out of the way. The install is a little cumbersome and it doesn’t come with screws for mounting. I bought Spax screws which worked well
Not great instructions but good system
The instructions were not great. But it ended up being pretty straight forward and the pulley locations turned out to be able to be customized (the beams didn’t align perfectly — and with the Motion XT XL it just felt better to space them further away to angle the slings a bit). Just note that they make you buy the attached hardware and the pulleys and the cranking rack have two different sized holes.
Storing your Thule box
Very pleased with this purchase. Great instructions as with all other Thule products I've purchased. My only caution for U.S. buyers is you will need to add blocking between your ceiling rafters to hang this. It's not set up for our standard 16" on center construction. Not a big issue, just something to be aware of.
Safe storage when not in use
Product works as advertised. Keeps my Thule Motion XT XL out of the way where it won't get damaged. Read the other reviews about installation and it does take some thought since it's not designed for 16" on center joists. I probably over engineered it using 2 X 6 but it's what I had on hand. Would definitely recommend this.
So far so good
I’ve installed my motion xt L on this Multilift and so far does the job great
