Great convertible mittens, except for the metal
sundaesmile

I love convertible mittens, but it's hard to find ones that aren't knitted. These are very warm and do block the wind. However, the mitten part is held back by a magnetic metal snap. This makes it easy to keep the mitten part secure when not in use, but the snap inside of the mitten is covered by thin nylon, so it also means you have a cold piece of metal on the back of your hand, and one at your fingertip when the mitten part is in use. I'm going to buy some fleece to stitch on the inside to cover the metal/nylon since these are otherwise well made and warm. Black Diamond might want to consider using fleece instead of nylon to cover the snaps in the future, or use velcro or a button/loop closure instead.

Wind Weight Gloves

I bought these to work on my bike during a flat during cold weather. I found that my hands would become so numb changing a tire that I could hardly bead the tire. I haven't had to use them for that yet. However, when I do I will have to cut the thumb off. These are not cycling gloves, but I have used them for riding. They do a great job of blocking the wind, but there are two problems that I have while riding. One, they cause my hands to sweat feel swampy while not being very warm. Worst, there is a seam right on the webbing between the index finger and the thumb. This digs into my hand and is very uncomfortable. Again, these aren't cycling gloves so that won't matter to most people. These do have great dexterity even while in mitten mode. I have no problems shifting and breaking while wearing these in mitten mode. I have also used these on 6-8 mile walks with trekking poles. I found them to work very will this way. They are comfortable, warm without being hot, and I can easily use my phone to check directions or look for a place to eat.

Perfect convertible mittens

I have a pair of convertible mittens purchased years ago & looked at so many others to purchase another pair as a backup. Search is over & I’m patting myself on the back for waiting & finally deciding to get these. Glad I read on your website that the extra small fits someone with my hand measurement (I’m female/hand measures 6-1/4” from wrist to tip of middle finger). There’s just a slight room at the tip which is no problem at all; has a very good fit. These are exactly what I wanted & more! Very comfortable & I love the snap magnet feature too, so it stays secure. Comfortable, warm, not bulky, perfect for walking my dog. Thank you R.E.I.!

Great Gloves Arrive On Time

The convertible mittens are wonderful. I bought them for two of my friends. We take a 5 mile walk together every morning. The small size fit both of them and the convertible feature enabled them to free up fingers to tie shoes and cool off on warmer mornings without having to take off the gloves and need a pocket to stuff them in. REI Customer Service was superb! I ordered them early but the days were getting close to Christmas and they had not arrived via USPS. No problem, I called and the gal on the other end said they would be sent out the next day with UPS and when the ones from USPS arrived, all I had to do was return them!

I miss the open thumb

Overall the gloves are nice, comfortable and they have kept my hands warm. However, they miss a prominent featrue that my old convertable mitten style gloves had, the ability to expose the thumb. I thought I could get by without that feature but after wearing them only once I discovered not have the ability to expose my thumb was a deal breaker. While nice, these gloves have now be relegated to a back-up status and I have purchased another set from another retailer. I'll come back if the design is tweaked to have the ability to expose the thumb.

Great for around town, but cannot use a compass.

These are great glittens. (The industry term is "glomitts"? Missed opportunity, folks.) The fit is good and snug, the material is dense enough to keep out wind without being bulky, and the leather palms are great for abrasion resistance. The magnetic clasps are cool in that they let the mitten half stay flipped out of the way automatically, but if you are bothering to wear them, how long do you intend to leave the mitten part off that it will have time to get in the way? And I would just stop at "they're cool" and give it five stars, except... It is impossible to use a compass with these. Even with the mitten half dangling freely away from the hand, the snap stuck to the back of the hand is way too close to the needle, and the magnets can't be removed without compromising the integrity of the gloves. I will need to find an alternative for anywhere I need to navigate.

Too big, exchanging

Great gloves. The magnetic closure will be great when needing fingers to help my kids with their jacket zippers and such without taking my whole glove off. The small size was a bit too big, so will exchange for the extra small and hope that fixes it. Typically am a size small in women's gloves. Note that this is a unisex glove, so make sense they are a tad big.

Needs a thumb flap, too

I bought these because I lost one of a similar pair that I loved. I didn't realize at the time that the thumps don't fold back like the ones that I lost. Without thumb exposure it's really hard to do things that I expect with fingerless-ness. I ended up slicing a line so I can poke my thumb through, but without an overlap of a flap, they are drafty. Oh well.

Please Redesign the Thumb

I use these for hiking and climbing. So the convertibility is a great idea to expose the fingers to do detailed tasks in cold weather in the mountains. They usually keep my hands warm enough until I need to switch to my thicker and warmer mittens. The only suggestion I have is to please redesign the thumb. For me, the mittens could last much longer if they also expose the thumb. Because of climbing, the thin padding and the constant rubbing wears off the material very quickly. So I have gone through many pairs over the years. The pair I currently have, which I bought a little over a year ago, already has holes in the thumb. I keep coming back to this brand because it's the only one out there suitable for what I do.
