Decent lock
I got this for 3 bikes in a bike locker at my apartment. It is alright. I would never trust it outside or in public where anyone can get to it. The cable could be cut easily. It is good enough to keep honest people honest.
Thin cable, easily cut
Easy to use but also easy to cut, as I found out the hard way when my kayak was stolen.
Extremely cumbersome to lock a touring kayak
Every time I try to lock my boat to my rack I spend ten minutes struggling to get the cables taught enough so the lock doesn't flop around but loose enough that I can get the lock to close.
perfect
I’ve had these for several years and now own 3 of them. They are perfect for many items and sizes. Common sense says not to put a lock in dirt or sand. It is the easiest adjustable lock I’ve used for variable sizes. I definitely would not the cable itself to be any heavier or larger in diameter as then it would be too hard to use. If someone wants to steal something from you it doesn’t matter how large the cable is so why make it heavy, bulky and tough to use.
Good idea, poor execution
I purchased this for my canoe as recommended by an REI rep. On the plus side, it functions as a lock (as it should) and could be used on a wide variety of boat designs. However, there are some major dings (literately). It was very difficult to get it securely tied in or around my boat in a position where it wouldn't bounce around during transit. Because of this, I would lock/unlock when parking/entering my vehicle. Two of the ends of the lock are bare metal, though, so I ended up putting a pretty nasty paint chip in my vehicle one of the times I applied the lock. Because of this, I will be returning the lock. If the manufacturer would have a plastic dipped tip on the metal ends and would provide an option to tighten up the lock rather than having a fixed connection at the end, I think I would have kept it.
Problem with lock
The wire apparatus is excellent. It is thin and can fit easily around poles and through holes easily. However, the lock mechanism itself is very difficult to open. Sometimes it takes up to 4 minutes to try and open the lock. Very frustrating.
Good lock, but spare/replacement keys can't be had
No complaints about the lock itself. Like most locks, keeps honest people honest, but would be easily cut by anybody with half a mind to try. The real problem is that these used to come with just a single key (mine did, at least), and you cannot obtain additional or replacement keys. The first time I contacted Seattle Sports to ask about extra keys, they never even responded. After prompting them with a follow up, I waited two weeks to get a 1-liner email saying that spare/replacement keys can't be had.
Lock cannot handle dirt and sand
This may be ok on on top of the rack on the car/suv. However, we used while kayaking and camping on lake Powell. We would leave our kayaks on the ground at night and cable/lock them to the RV. The sand and dirt caused the lock to not function. We tried everything in a panic to get started and finally after letting the lock soak in water and shaking the lock in the water did it finally free up. We were then very careful wrapping the lock in plastic the next night but the sand still made its way to the lock and again it would not disengage. Same solution but a bit longer on the 2nd day. 3rd day we used multiple plastic bags and plastic wrap and it was jammed again. After an hour of soaking and shaking it finally freed. I had to return it. If this is just in the garage or on top of the car I am sure it is fine but not in the dirt.
A pain to use
I haven't found anything better, but as another reviewer wrote, locking a touring kayak with this lock is a serious pain. One end easily snaps into place with the lock unlocked, but getting the other end through the cradle is extraordinarily difficult while trying to pull cable taut around the boat. It takes me as long to rig this lock up as it does to get the boat on/off the car and deal with the other tie downs.
Multiple uses!
Works as instructions recommend but loop will also fit through the scupper holes and you can secure multiple kayaks by using it that way.
