Love that they fold down to fit in the backpack
Love the poles, am buying my second set. I've had the first set for years. Only problem was, after years of use when the tip wore out, I couldn't unscrew it to replace it.
poor quality
I got these as a present. Green accents. Thought I would love them. I had a different time figuring them out. REI gear support helped me with that. I was on a month long hike in Spain. The first day the bottom section of one of the poles feel off. I thought I had them fixed, apparently I didn’t. The bottom section keep falling off. Happen several times till I lost the bottom piece of the one pole. I was so angry that I ditched them and bought some cheep poles since I had 3 more weeks of backpacking.
Great Poles - But No Instructions How to Deploy
Like other reviewers, I too struggled figuring out how to properly deploy these poles and could find no information on the subject on Komperdell's website or anywhere else on the web (in fact, I couldn't even find these poles referenced anywhere on Komperdell's website - I'm assuming because they've been discontinued). And REI's answer on their website was to go to REI for a demonstration. I was about to return them, but then I think I figured it out, and they're super easy to deploy and are very beefy, sturdy poles once you know how to put them together. Since no one seems to want to answer the question of how to deploy them, here's what I figured out: just remove the velcro strap, hold the handle and let the sections of the pole hang down, and then pull all the way down on the small section of tube just below the locking clamp until it clicks into place (about 9 inches or so - a locking button will reveal itself once you pull the tube all the way down). The pole will assemble itself if you pull the tube down all the way until it clicks and the locking button reveals itself - literally takes a fraction of a second. You can then adjust the length with the locking clamp by unclamping and extending the handle section to your preferred length and then re-clamping. To put the poles away, unclamp and shorten the handle section, push the locking button in, reinsert the tube into the handle section and then pull the lower two sections apart and fold and re-velcro. Hopefully, this helps.
Poles will not stay connected
I purchased these poles from REI, with the intent of being able to easily pack them in luggage. One pole worked great. The second pole would not stay connected after about 3-4 steps. I spent more time reconnecting the pole, than I did walking with them.
Well built hiking poles
Komperdell poles are built strong and last a long time. The previous pair I have too is the REI branded komperdell poles with the shocks and they've served me well over the past decade. I was looking for a compact folding one that could be carried *inside* my travel pack or duffle bags for my overseas hiking trips and glad to have stumbled upon it. The poles are built strong and deploy super-easy. The attached Velcro readily wraps around for stowing. The color and the finish is so good the poles are did the
Follow the instructions from the reviews.
I just received the poles and followed the instructions from the previous reviewer. It’s super easy! One of my Black Diamond Z pokes was stolen, the other one is non-functional, so this is the replacement to take overseas. It weighs 550 gm and fit in my carry on. Super excited!!
Great
I loved these poles, especially for the price. Their caps fell off quickly (like all other poles) and it includes no extras. I felt they were good poles not as good as my Black Diamonds but perfect for the price.
Great trekking poles
Love these. Have been hiking in CO and really find them helpful on steep up and steep down.
broke within 2 months- don't expect a refund
I thought i would love these after receiving them. They seemed to be a well built pole, but broke on me within 2 months. the aluminum part that goes into the carbon shaft bent, causing extra pressure on the carbon shaft, causing it to fail on me during a creek hike. I took them back to REI for a swap, and thankfully, was allowed to, but was told in the future not to expect one. Thanks REI
