Trail-Running Shoes Buying Guide

On or off road, these waterproof Saucony shoes perform. They deliver the same foam innovation and comfort as the iconic Ride franchise but with a more rugged design. The lugged soles are grippy.

I purchased the Ride TR2 GTX to complement my Ride 18's. I use these to run in wet and snowy conditions in the Northeast. Also light trail running where it could be muddy. They are super comfortable to walk or run in. The goretex holds up to it name. The traction is much better than the regular 18's. I ran in mud, rain, etc. and waterproofing does the job. They are as light as the regular Ride 18's and fast. These did take some time to break in as other reviews stated. I thought the fit was true as is. Would recommend if you are not running on technical trails or like to run on trail/gravel and paved road mix.
The good: Shoe seems like it’s good in quality. Good stability and cushion. Good looks. Waterproof so far. The bad: the laces are terrible for holding a knot of any kind. The stuff you want to keep in mind: these are a little narrow. They are also tight across the top of my foot. The narrower toe-box was expected, but the tight fit over the top of my foot is something completely new for me with Saucony. I’ve taken a 10.5d since the exodus 6 gtx but the new sizing (circa peregrine 12) is leaving me lost with this brand for the last couple of years. I’d suggest ordering 1/2 size up if you have a slightly wider foot, or a higher arch. Oh…and look for better laces! Wish the 11’s were in stock.
Outstanding shoes. I have very large flat feet and the insoles come out so my orthotics can fit in. I’ve never had waterproof shoes that I forget to take off because they’re so comfortable. A+ in my book.
I purchased these as my winter running shoes. The traction is wickedly good. I have worn these mostly on snow covered roads and gravel here in Northern Wisconsin. The Gore-Tex upper provides more warmth than regular synthetic mesh. I have worn these shoes in 2F conditions and they kept my feet comfortable. The cushion is dialed in perfectly - good even on the short pavement sections on the way to gravel road or trail. Good right out of the box, but supremely comfortable after about 30-40 miles.
Bought for colder weather. It’s been warm and surprisingly faster than I expected. I have about 50 miles in them. It felt a little heavy in early runs - not unexpected for a trail shoe - but I like its performance and it fits tractor size. I chose over the Triumph 22 GTX because the Ride TR2 feels closer to the Triumph 21. Triumph has long been my favorite trainer.
I walk in an urban setting about four miles each day. I've been wearing Saucony GTX shoes for years. I noticed a change for the worse about five years ago and the process Saucony is using for waterproofing is failing--not even water resistant. The heel to toe drop of 8 mm is perfect for me and they remain wind resistant. This last pair arrived on a day when the snow was melting and lots of little puddles on the sidewalks. I gingerly walked through the puddles and arriving home, removed my custom orthotics and found them wet corresponding to the toe box--same old same old. The cushioning of these is excellent as is the fit--very comfortable! According to the online robots Saucony changed the Gore-Tex from a bootie liner to Gore-Tex Invisible Fit technology. That technology is a bust! You can't even walk through wet grass without failure! In the past I could walk submerged in water and not a drop of water inside the shoe! Very disappointing.
I worked in Running specialty for a long time but I have not worn Sauconys in a few years. The shoe was extremely well constructed and well cushioned and I have no doubt it would perform very well on the trail in wet and cold weather. Unfortunately it is far too narrow for me through the mid foot and i step. I had to return them
This shoe is warm, which is what I was hoping for. It is a little bit too stiff, which makes sense considering its construction and purpose. I hope it will soften up a bit with more wear. But overall, I am very happy with the shoe. It is comfortable within its parameters and purpose.
My only gripe about the shoe would be that the lateral side lugs seem to be fairly aggressive at kicking my foot to the medial side of the foot. I might try shaving some of the lugs down if I can figure a way to do that. Maybe finding a thicker softer insole will help.
I have a few runs totaling more than 10 miles in light to moderate rain in the Pacific Northwest. Each time my right shoe has had water leak in the toebox area. Seemed like the perfect shoe on paper but not all that waterproof in real life.
