Between sun hoodies and waffle fleeces like the paradigmatic R1, I (and probably all of us high-output athletes) have a quiver of base-to-mid weight, slim-fit hoodies. I gave into the temptation to add this new article because it was wool, thinner, had the quarter zip, and the all-black is passable as a foundation piece for more urban activities, like beers on a patio on a fall evening or whatever. So far it has performed as expected--both on trails and on patios. It's my only top garment on runs between 25 and 40 degrees fahrenheit. If you are wearing a running vest or maybe a Cirque-series ski pack, you can operate in even colder temps with this piece alone. Medium fits great for me (6'1", 165 lbs).
The Solution 150 (with hood) has to be my favorite base layer so far! Hiking the AT on a cold day I can wear this all day and night, minimal odor, keeps me warm and wicked. And I like the way the green looks!! Best piece of gear I've picked up this year
I work on snow in these base layers. I'm 5'10" 2000 athletic. Ordered the Large. Initially thought they were too form fitting but they relax immediately and feel great. Not too tight, not too loose. They fit perfectly. Very comfortable. Much warmer than I expected for a thin base layer. Hood is great, don't always put it on my head, but fully zipped up it keeps the drafts from going down my jacket. Best of all with BD base layers, is so far, they are very durable and seem to last quite a while without thinning in spots like other brands. Really impressed and fully recommend.
I've used the Solution 150 hoody as my main go-to base layer for ski touring for a few years now. The NuYarn has held up really well, the quarter zip helps manage ventilation and the hood fits well (not loose like a sun hoody but not a tight scuba fit either). I consistently take a large in BD tops and the large Solution fits trim but well. I run hot, so I would love it if they made the same quarter zip hoody in a lighter NuYarn as well, I would buy a Solution 130 in a flash.
Sherpa had a merino hoody--great piece, but this one goes farther. The hoody allows you to micro-tune your layering, saving time and weight. Superb quality, great fit that looks good in any situation. Patagonia Air Hoody is a good one, but it is a heat blowtorch and limited; use of this one stretches from winter ice climbing/skiing to summer mountaineering/through hiking. As much of a "must-have" piece as exists.
Sherpa started with a Merino hoody--great piece that was, and was so glad when BD made one and improved it. The hoody on a base layer allows you to micro-tune layering so as to drop weight and really perform across mountain sports. Well-made, tough, perfect-fitting, great-looking, super performer that must be in your kit and used constantly. No one else has one like this--BD champion.
Amazing pc of clothing. Light weight feeling. Next to skin is super soft. Doesn’t stink after being soaked in sweat!!! Then breathes and dries fast. I purchased a second after putting my first one through the wringer. Also purchased a rhythm t for the same reasons! Only reason for the second is to change the color scene mojo for the day😁🤘
I love the colour combo on this one - and after wearing it, it absolutely is the perfect base layer for cold weather sports. The only reason I gave it a four star rating is that I’m not a good guy on base layer stuff. I wear a puffy and a shell, both with hoods - so it gets a little excessive! I’d love to see this in a high collar version.
I use this all winter over a merino tee and in warmer months for alpine starts or overnights. Appreciate the light weight, but warmth and the hood is great to keep a bit warmer when the wind blows. Super flexible with the hood, half zip and thumb holes. Lightweight and packable when things warm up and needs to get stowed in the pack.
This has quickly become my go-to for mountain biking and alpine hiking. It moves really well, wicks moisture like a champ, drys relatively quickly and looks good!. Haven’t noticed if it smells yet.. so that’s probably a good thing. It does fit a tad snug…. I prefer a bit of a loser for but I understand the reasoning.
