bad experience with these shoes
I wore these shoes on a single 3.3-mile hike over moderately rocky terrain, and unfortunately, I was disappointed. After just one use, the glue on the bottom of the right shoe began to separate. On top of that, the laces didn’t stay secure. They kept loosening throughout the hike, which made the fit feel unstable. I also noticed a large number of reviews seem to be from Influencer.com, many of which appear to be based on first impressions rather than real-world use. I’m sharing this to offer more practical, tested feedback for anyone considering these for actual trail use.
Better city than hiking shoe
I was looking for a shoe that could be used for hiking but still look casual enough for city walking while traveling and this one hit the goldilocks spot! This shoe is very similar to a new balance 740 in terms of feel and build. Its rather plush and thick but still offers some breathability in the toe box. Made it great for my time spent in the city. However, this shoe compromised on the hiking side. My foot always felt loose, with the upper portion that was missing an extra set of holes for a final round of laces, and the traction was rather poor. Walking downhill on a gravel path, I was the only one sliding within my group
Shoes stay cool, but still 2 small issues
Good overall shoe—I was looking for lightweight, strong shank for long & rocky trails, breathable. But there are 2 issues I hope Keen fixes: 1) the tongue is only secured near the top of the laces near the toes so it *always* slips to one side; they should have another location for securing with the laces and 2) the sole of the shoe is flat so the cords securing gaiters wear out much faster than they should—there isn’t a way to lace them under the shoe to avoid wear-and-tear on the cord.
comfortable everyday summer shoe
I purchased a KEEN waterproof shoe this spring as some of our trails were either muddy or with water over the boards of the walkway. Came back to purchase its not waterproof companion shoe for summertime walking. But noticed the toe was designed still as waterproof and I was reluctant to have hot toes as that's what I was trying to get away from. Sales rep recommended to try this KEEN shoe as it still has the signature larger toe box and is well ventilated. Happy with them.
Light and fast
Great fit. Super lightweight. Better ventilation than my previous keen vented hikers.
Comfortable but will not stay tight or tied
I’m not an influencer and I was not paid to write this review—here’s the honest truth from the field. These shoes are very comfortable and durable, and they look great. But they will *not* stay tight, no matter how much I attempted to fix it. Be advised that you will be re-tying these shoes every 10-15 minutes. Not a huge deal if you are only wearing them to work or to pad around town running errands, but for actual trail use? Sort of a dealbreaker.
Replaced my old Merrells
My Daughter invited me on a 5k walk around town. I'm 78 now and usually get a couple of 2 mile walks per week on my 6 (or so) year old Merrells. While my cardio did fine on the 5k, my hips hurt afterward. I opted for new shoes (these Keens). They feel “spongy” to walk on and the extended heel makes me cautious going down stairs. However, no sore hips on all of the 5k walks I’ve done this month.
Picky Spouse Loves Them
I bought them for my husband who hates shoe shopping and will wear his favorite shoes until they fall off his feet. It was time. It has become embarrassing. Right out of the box he exclaimed, “My new favorite shoes!” No breaking in time. The wide Keen toe box did the trick. Although he has very narrow feet, he likes lots of room for long toes. He loves them.
Excellence in Comfort
I've been wearing Keen shoes for over 10 years now. I've worn them for work and I walked all over Europe in them. They were the only pair of shoes I took with me. They're comfortable, stylish enough for a casual night out, and they're water resistant.
