Amazing fabric; seams stiff and unbearable
The fabric was super cozy and I could see how this could keep you really warm. But the seams keeping it all together, especially running down the length of the arms, were truly unbearable. Stiff, scratchy, and uncomfortable. I've never actually experienced this in a shirt before, but it makes it unwearable.
Bought for my wife, super uncomfortable
I'm a big Patagonia fan, and their stuff is high quality and functional. This was high quality, functional, AND uncomfortable. The seams were so stiff and rough. They were very far off the mark with this one.
Snugly and warm
Once washed, this fabric is super soft, much softer than the midweight. I've been wearing mine all winter and it has kept me toasty for early morning commutes and 14ers in the snow.
I just purchased my 3rd
These thermal base layers are awesome. I also have the matching long pants in two colors. These are super cozy and very soft to the skin, and because they fit snug there is no bunching when you layer. I am 5’-6” and 140 pounds, and the medium fits perfect. I would highly recommend this product!
Patagonia falls short. Rough and itchy!
I just received the Capilene thermal weight top. For spending $90, I’d expect something to be smooth and comfortable. Patagonia really fell short on this product. The interior of the fabric is bumpy and not smooth or soft in the slightest. I can only imagine the ridges that would be imprinted in my skin if I slept in this. The flat seams are rough and itchy. I will be returning for something else.
soft and warm
I don't understand the reviews that say this is scratchy! The thermal capilene is vey soft and stretchy! I'm a size 4 with a small bust and got the XS, although a S would have been fine too -- I went with more form fitting for better thermal effect. Smooth on outside, fuzzy little squares on the inside. The smooth base is an open technical weave that allows breathing; it's really quite brilliant fabric design. I paid full price to have this for my NW beach trip for storm watching in 40mph winds+rain (along with a fleece top under an REI down jacket under my REI ZeroDry GTX rain shell and Kokatat GTX kayak pants -- stayed warm and dry). I'm waiting for other colors I like (such as true navy, regen green, dusty purple, or rusty brown/orange would be nice dear Patagonia) then will buy more of these in addition to the black I purchased. I loved this so much that I did order the black 1/4 zip version for neck warmth; love that too. I think I may give up Smartwool for this product!
Fantastic shirt all the time for hiking
This is an awesome layer. It does initially feel scratchy (I'm super sensitive to that with wool etc.), but somehow that feeling goes away fast and you forget about it. You are left with a perfectly comfortable shirt that is breathable but keeps you warm - but not too warm! It really is quite miraculous. Somehow this shirt just knows what temperature I want to be and keeps me there. I just wish there were more fun colors available because I would like to buy more.
maybe if it cost $5
material is see through thin, a tee-shirt would provide more insulation. complete disappointment. I will be returning this item.
Seam location on arms is of poor design.
Upon reading other reviews, I kept seeing "the seams are scratchy" or other reference to the seams in the arms of the shirt, but was wondering truly what that meant to folks. I'm not particularly sensitive to fabrics or textures, and have wanted a heavier weight capilene for under my dry suit. I bought one to see what the fuss was about, and I better understand the problem. It's a design issue. Unlike the midweight capilene, which has its seams located under the arm and forearm, this heavyweight capilene designer chose to place the seam along the inside of the bicep. I do not believe the seam itself is any different than normal, however it is located along the bicep which receives the most flexion and movement, and the seam slides uncomfortably along the muscle when moving. Not a good design. Like the others, I did not appreciate the garment and returned it. The midweight's design is more functional & appropriate for comfortable movement. I hope this gives more context to all the reviews about the scratchy seams.
