If you were a fan of the Oboz Sawtooth 2 like I was, then you have found a suitable replacement! I order the same size in this Ascent as I had for the Sawtooth 2 and they fit about the same. The great features that I like for the Ascents is the sturdy soles that seem like they can handle a rough trail and take some abuse; a well-ventilated toe area to keep feet cool; a snug heel cup and a wider toe box for a secure and comfortable feel; round laces that stay tied; and good toe bumpers. They are also made in Vietnam, which was where the Sawtooth 2's were made. In terms of comparing the two, these have some heel cushioning whereas the old Sawtooths did not. I generally prefer some cushioning. These have a softer suede leather than the Sawtooth 2 so the uppers are a bit more flexible. Only time will tell if they hold up as well. Kudos to REI for delivering these to me so fast!
I've had 4-5 different Oboz models over the years, mostly for light hiking and everyday wear. The original Sawtooth model had been my favorite until now. These combine the softer, more breathable uppers reminiscent of Merrel's with Oboz superior support and comfort. Perfect fit and great hiking/walking comfort.
