Good little walkie
This is a solid walkie. We are happy with the size and the charging base. We used it during an overnight fishing trip to communicate between boats. There were no obstructions and we were ~.5 mile apart. The sound quality was very good and the battery lasted all night and into the morning. I liked the NOAA weather feature and multi channels. The clip is a good size for belts and straps and held tight. The headpiece was not used much but was comfortable. The volume of the headpiece was very loud even at low volume. We live in a densely wooded and hilly area, and found that we did not get very good range in this situation, <.5 mile range.
Clear reception/high quality
Camping in an isolated area behind a large hill was the perfect place to review these radios. However, with the hill as an obstruction our range was limited. The Midland's instruction booklet is easy to follow, buttons are easy to operate, radio is comfortable to hold, and the belt clip is very tight (exercise care unlatching to prevent breaking). The NOAA Weather Radio is a great feature too. The radios can be charged while positioned on the charging stand or via a charging cord plugged directly into the radio and to an electrical source (such as a portable power bank). We are very impressed with the clear reception and convenience of the Midland X-Talker Two-way Radios. We are looking forward to using these radios during our future no-cell service camping, fishing, and hiking adventures.
Good Walkie-Talkie with Decent Range
As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I am fortunate to receive products to review from time to time. I was pleased to get this walkie-talkie because it had an earphone, unlike ones I have had in the past. After I figured out that I had to press the button on the ear bud to talk when it was plugged into the walkie-talkie, it was great. The owner’s manual did not go into detail about that little feature. I was down the mountain, and my wife was inside about a quarter of a mile away when we first tried it. It worked perfectly and with no static. I liked that this model has sub channels. I have used two-way radios before that didn’t have sub-channels, and we always got interference. The sound quality was great—not excellent, but great for being so small. The best thing about this two-way radio is that it is rechargeable. I don’t have to worry about battery replacement. The one thing I would add to make it better would be a charging block. It came with a charging station and cord, but I had to use a charging block that was being used for something else. Other than that, I really liked this model and look forward to checking out the range at longer distances. I could see using this while kayaking on the lake when somebody is onshore or while camping when our group is spread out.
Be cautious, you may end up with 1/2 a pair
Bought from local REI in May of 2019. Within first year 1 unit has been acting up. Randomly would not power up. Battery verified as good. Even tried individual batteries versus the rechargeable pack. Then it would all of a sudden decide to power up. This has happened on and off until recently. The unit has finally decided just not to power on. Doesn't matter what I do. I have moved the known good battery to this unit and nothing. When it worked, it was great to give the kids for when the went hanging out in the neighborhood or ahead of us on the trail. Now I have one working radio and one dead one. Can't do much with that.
good range but short battery life
This product is good enough if you only need to use it for less than 10 hours. I was on the Cactus to Clouds trail and it took me 18 hours to complete. The included battery has only like 700 mAh. I replaced the included battery with 3 AAA rechargable NiH batteries, each 1100 mAh. Even so, the units' battery died after about 10 hours. Meanwhile my hiking buddy brought his Rocky Talkie which still had more than 90% battery life by the end of the hiking trip. I gave this product 3 stars for the clear communication and good range. I was able to hear others clearly from about 3 miles away.
Used Jeeping in Moab
I got these radios and love them. I actually got a three pack. My husband used them in replacement of his CB (which wasn't working) while on some jeep trails in Moab. The radios were awesome--had great clarity and were easy to use. He could even hear other people on the same frequency across the river as if they were right next to him. Obviously there was no interference but he could also change the frequency just enough to not hear the other people. Excited to use them in other situations this summer/fall--camping, hunting, etc.
Safety first
I use these walkies to talk to my climbing partners from the top/bottom of pitches. Huge peace of mind knowing exactly what we are saying without having to wonder, "Is he off belay?" Battery life is decent and the size is perfect. I originally bought the Motorola Talkabout but these are smaller, have a longer battery life and use AAA instead of AA, overall I like these much more. Climb on!
Will die out soon if your goal is skiing
Stay away from these cheap piece of radio, bought it from REI and now cant return after 90 days after exactly when I start getting battery problems. While skiing the battery will start showing low battery even after 3-4 radio transmission, sometimes one radio is stuck in TX mode and sometimes the battery will start showing charging without being even connected. I tried to reach out of Midland warranty and THEY DONT CARE. No response no email or phone NOTHING. HORRIBLE !!!
Unusable for cruising.
The biggest problem with these is the signal strength... I originally got these for a cruise hoping to be able to communicate with other people in our group, but we literally were only able to use them when a few rooms away. 6 decks apart right above each other wouldn't work. When we got home we tried them fully charged, in the suburbs of Columbus OH where it is pretty sparce housing and they would not work at 1.12 miles away. They get a second star because they did have several good aspects. The battery life was pretty good. I am a fan of them being rechargeable to save on battery waste. The privacy codes are a great. The big problem was just that we couldn't use them for what we needed.
Stopped working after a little over a year
We very lightly use these, occasionally. The lithium batteries only have around a 30 or 60 day warranty and they stopped holding a charge after only a few months. I thought, I'll just use AAAs. But even when the batteries are good (tested by my battery tester) one of them shuts off after a minute or two. About 15 months after I bought them, I now need to buy a new set.
