Pretty solid, but range is lacking
This walkie-talkie set is perfect for around the neighborhood, campsite, or for short range. It’s really easy to use, easy to set up, and the battery life is great! The included headphones were a really convenient option but there is no volume control on the headphone itself. Unfortunately, we found that the distance didn’t really hold up to the claims. In some situations, we were only half mile apart and lost connection completely. The sound quality after about a quarter mile seems to dip substantially. If you’re looking for short range, it’s probably a go to option for you! Disclaimer: This is a personal review in exchange for product. My honest feedback is my compensation for product usage.
Great radios
I am very pleased with Midland radios. My partner and I are avid hikers, but we hike at very different speeds. Since we have gotten these radios, we have been able to start out at different times and check in with each other until we get to the designated meeting spots. It has been a great game changer! I have used these both in "line of sight" as it mentions on the website and in wooded and rocky terrain without line of sight. They worked great. Even in the rocky terrain, when we were pretty far from each other, we were able to connect. They are lightweight and hook well onto straps and pant pockets. They have been holding a charge really well. I like that there are 22 channels to choose from, as other hikers use radios too. :) Would definitely recommend.
Range depends on channel
I already reviewed this product last year, but couldn't find how to edit a review. I just want to point out to those complaining about the poor range that these operate in two modes, FRS and GMRS, depending on which channel you select. In FRS transmission is limited to 1/2 watt and range will be quite limited. GMRS transmission is up to 2 watts. In particular, (according to Wikipedia) channels 8 - 14 are mandated by the FCC to be FRS only, and therefore low power. Channels 1-7 can be used by either FRS or GMRS, but I don't know specifically how this model uses those channels. And Channels 15 - 22 are GMRS only. So before complaining about poor range, make sure you have tried them on one of the GMRS channels.
Very light weight, excellent for the price.
My brother is a light weight backpacking fanatic, and refused to carry walkie-talkies. But when he saw how small and light these were, he agreed to take one with him. Turned out very useful when we split up looking for water sources on the Mogollon Rim in Arizona. I can't say what the real effective range is, but the sound is clear and loud, and they worked perfectly well up to the quarter mile or so we separated in hilly, forested terrain. They are not professional instruments, but they are not children's toys either (though they could be used that way).
Skip these, spend a little more for a better set
These were the cheapest radios at REI. I needed them for a cross country road trip to communicate on the road between our two cars. They worked fine for the first few days, but by day 4 in the road trip, one radio started having issues. Thankfully, by day 5 we were near an REI, and I went in and exchanged them for a set of Motorola radios. Though obviously more expensive, the motorola radios have held up since the road trip. I wouldn't waste time on these radios. When I first bought them I remember the REI associate saying, "just so you know, there is a one year return policy on these, for when they start acting up" LOL i should have known then. Thanks for your great return policy REI!
Great for weekend warriors and kids alike.
Took these radios on a weekend camping trip with the family. The kids loved playing with the radios so the adults didn’t really get to use them lol. They worked good but we did pick up other channels every 10 minutes or so even after switching channels but that’s to be expected. My only real complaint is the battery life. One radio ran down the batteries fairly quickly while the other still had plenty. I’m not sure if it was a better manufacturer issue or a radio issue though. Overall, good little radios for weekenders and kids alike!
Excellent low cost radios
We used these radios for short-range tasks--when backing or levelling a trailer on a cross-country trip, our daughter would take a radio and be the safety observer as my wife backed the trailer---eased communication so that my wife could stop the rig exactly at the correct spot when the trailer was level or in position. Made trailer set-up much quicker, especially when setting up in low-light or low-visibility conditions. Radios were clear and pretty inexpensive. Never tested the radios for distance, but they worked really well for the intended purpose--short-range communications.
Excellent
Received this March 2022 and they are FRS radios and no license is required so maybe they have changed. I found the range to be about half a mile across a small American town. A key takeaway from the instructions is that some channels are .5 watts and some are 2 watts and more watts means more range.
Great little walkies!
I got these for Christmas and had planned mostly to use them out in cottage country where cel reception is spotty. Used them when I was ice fishing and walking the dogs to communicate with my wife back at the cottage. Actual range in dense forest was about 1 mile, but on the lake ice fishing, I had perfect communications and did not reach their range. I even lost one while traversing a rough ice patch (fell and lost it) and found it 3 hours later after getting the other walkie and using the call feature! It survived a 3 hour freeze below a few layers of broken ice and snow at -11°C and still worked beautifully. Very happy with them!
Tough
Can't say how far these work but for climbing they are awesome. My wife is soft spoken and hard to hear when I wander on a multi pitch route. Today, I dropped mine roughly 200 feet down a slab and thought it was done. After the route, there it was in one piece and working!
