Nothing but trust for this pole
I had a bit of a harrowing experience using Leki Cristillo poles. Three times the shaft came undone while on a technical descent. I brought them back to my local REI store in Reno where they suggested that I try the Black Diamond Carbon Pole. It is super reliable. The clamping system grips the extending shafts very well. Also super light and comfortable. The cork grips are great. I rely on the straps to support me on technical descents as opposed to using the tops of the grip (unstable). I have come to rely on this pole. A side benefit: If you are using the poles, your hands will not swell. Highly recommend them.
Quality
They are light, study, and easy to adjust. The cork is great on long hikes. Black Diamond offers reasonably priced replacement sections in case you break yours (wedging it in a rock). Four stars for three reasons. First, you need to adjust clamps every few hikes. They can get loose and pop open when you need it most. Second, The clamps are pointed the wrong direction (forward). If you are hiking through brush, they can get snagged and open up. Finally, I have a pair of the previous model poles and the cork handles are far superior and easier to grip. The new handles are great if you have extremely small hands. Bring back the old grips!
Great poles, but like everyone else, those clips..
Bought these poles for the first good hike of the year on Mt.Manadnock to replace my older metal shafts but hey i felt like spending a little extra this year. its not the craziest hike but i noticed when i got home both of my bottom plastic clips were broken right off, pretty bad design flaw but a honest to goodness sturdy pole. i weigh 280 about these stood mint, id give them a 5/5 if those clips werent a problem. But i give them a solid 3.5
Thank you for your review. Sorry to hear you're having an issue with the plastic clips on your pole. You can reach our customer service at mountain@bdel.com. I will have them reach out to you so we can fix up those clips.
Clips already breaking
Ive used these 3-4 times and opened and closed them in that time a dozen times tops. The plastic on the medal clips is already breaking off most of them and completely broke off one clamp already. I barely used these i hope the rest of the poles aren’t made so poorly because i had only seen good things about the poles before purchase.
Strong, light, and comfortable
I've probably used my poles for close to 1000 miles of hiking and backpacking, and they are still going strong. Since I got mine, the rest of my family was won over and everyone got their own pair. I'm 6'1 175 and use them at about 127.5 cm, almost the max length. They have saved me from countless tumbles on unstable ground and creeks. I would highly recommend getting rubber tip protectors or the replacement rubber tips unless you are going to be using them in snow. The carbide tips are very loud and annoying, and scratch up rocks.
Awesome poles!
I used these on the Inca Trail in Peru. These things performed like a champ! They were lightweight but had amazing strength. These things saved me from unnecessary strain, scraped knees from slipping, and twisted ankles from awkward weight placement. The cork on the handles wicked away the moisture very well and left my hands comfortably dry even during the most hair raising parts. I am totally glad that I bought these, and look forward to years of use!
Great poles until they fall apart
Bought in May 2019, lightly used and worked great for the first 100 miles, but the cork grips began to crumble. Then around mile 125 this past week one of the tips snapped. The grips are still plenty usable, but the tip is pretty much a nail in the coffin. The worst part is I just started on a longterm hiking trip out of the country, so returning them to the retailer for replacement isn't an option. I honestly loved them at first, too bad they aren't built to last, especially at this price point.
Thank you for your review. Sorry the poles didn't meet your expectations. If you have any interest in replacing specific parts of the pole our customer service team can be reached at mountain@bdel.com and would be happy to let you know what your options are. We do offer spare parts for this pole if you wanted to look into keeping them going. In any case thank you again for your review.
Love them!
I was a little worried about strength being how light they are, with my pack I was almost 300lbs, on my last stroll (245 mi) they held up perfectly!! Saving me countless times from certain doom! Also used them on occasion as a stake for my tarp on rain days, and a prop for the backpack on standing breaks The clasps can be tightened/maintained on the trail if ever needed, and cleaning is a breeze! The individual sections are fully removable with no little parts to get lost..super simple! The padded straps help (also labeled "L" & "R") while going uphill holding onto the padded sections below the main grips. While going down, the top of the grip is also palm friendly.! The feedback you get on a ground strike while hiking is excellent too.! I swapped off a little with someone that had shock absorbing in their handle... I wanted mine back almost immediately haha. They are a little pricey but absolutely worth the investment..
10 years old
I was initially reluctant to buy the most expensive poles I saw online 10 years ago, but I don't regret the decision. After hundreds of miles in the mountains of Southern California they are not even close to giving out even after the abuse I have put them through. There are lighter poles, and cheaper poles, but not better poles. You will never need another pair.
Great Poles!
These trekking poles are fantastic. This is my first set, however I have used some on hikes before. These are light, quiet and comfortable. If I had to say anything bad about them, it would be the clips. I have had a bush get caught and un-latch the clips without me realizing it until I went to put pressure on the pole. So far, great poles!
