Comfy support! At first you need to break them in.
I’ve been eyeing birks for ages — I’ve even tried knockoffs that gave out quickly. Finally decided to commit, and I’ve been very satisfied with my purchase. At the beginning, they won’t be comfortable — you need to break them in by wearing and letting it adjust to your foot. Mentally prepare for that, since the sole pretty solid at first. Once you break them in they’re sturdy yet comfy. I need the extra support for my arch, and birks provide that (I usually wear insoles or have sneakers with extra support). If you prefer flat flip flops, these will definitely feel different. I wear them to work, errands, hangout, even mild walks and hikes. Great recovery shoes!! I recommend them if you’re in need of arch support yet freedom and nonconstricted recovery shoes + longevity. The sole starts to curl slightly but not significantly. Overall I’m satisfied with the quality for the price. One last advice is don’t get them super wet — but I’ve walked with them in the light drizzle and it was fine.
Rolls Royce of sandals
Thank you REI for finally carrying these!!! Considering the last pair finally died after almost 20 years there worth every penny. There are finely crafted sandals and Birkenstock has been doing it right for over 200 years. Take your time to break them in and they will last a LONG, LONG time. Give yourself a 0.25 inch of room on the toe and heel end and your set. I also suggest conditioning the leather (Bickmore, Bick 4 is the best) it will save you from stains and hasten the break in time—wear with wool socks also, for a bit. Run them into the ground and just send ‘em back for repair! Best sandals I have ever owned, never messed with the $20-$30 throwaways anyway.
Awesome everyday sandals
The fit perfect and are comfortable right out of the box, definitely will being buying more pairs!
Very Poor Quality
REI is the absolute best. What happened to Birkenstock? I bought 4 pairs of Birkenstocks for my family and 2 pairs are coming apart within a month. I've now ordered 3 pair of Birkenstocks for myself and I've had to send them all back. Glue everywhere. Leather totally discolored brand new. Sole is coming off of a pair I never even put my foot in. Actually I have yet to put my foot in any of them. Sole and corkbed are not aligned. The list goes on and on. Years ago I had a used pair that lasted me for 10 straight years. Just sad. Again, not REI's fault. REI is the best!
Sandal Color Different Than Online Photo
Love Birkenstocks - no issue with quality or fit - but was surprised that photo on REI site for Iron Oiled Leather looks more light gray than brown. I guess that makes sense for the name (iron) but the photo online definitely looks darker and more brown than gray. Luckily REI is awesome about returns so it's not a huge deal, but just not what I was expecting.
Patience
Ive read a lot of reviews of people complaining about these not being comfortable or giving them blisters. While of course not everyone foot will find these comfy, do some research before giving a product a 1 star rating. Birkenstock’s are not normal foam, cushy sandals. They are leather and cork. You can’t walk miles in them out of the box. Think of them as the leather boot of the sandal world. You need to break them in with some short wearing sessions before they’re ready for all day wear. The leather needs to break in and the cork needs to conform to your foot. This may seem tedious for sandals but once they’re broken in they are extremely comfortable. I have high volume fat feet and these are one of the few sandals that are comfortable. Have some patience breaking them in.
Misrepresenting colors
Not the color shown online at all. Wish I would have read other reviews.
Who doesn't love Birkenstocks?
Very comfortable; I expect to get many years out of this pair, like I did my last. If you've never worn Birkenstocks, it's possible you might not like them. They're a flat shoe, and they have a ridge behind the toes, ahead of the ball of the foot, and between the big toe and the others. I like that feel very much. Put some Barge cement around the edges of the cork, and they'll last forever. I think (but am not sure) you can even get them resoled. If you've had Birkenstocks before, well, they're Birkenstocks. Exactly what you'd expect.
Extremely disappointed - buyer beware
Cork started coming apart a mere couple months after wearing these sandals...worse yet, REI pointed me to Birkenstock for warranty and Birkenstock told me it's normal wear and tear. I've never heard of a $150 sandal starting to fall apart in 100 days of light use before...their customer service dept told me to pound salt when I asked for help/ discount.
Very comfy but lacking in longevity
I purchased these based on reviews suggesting these lasted a very long time but I ended up only getting a year and half out of mine and that counts multiple months wearing them with a completely worn sole in several areas. These are VERY comfortable and I love their looks but at their price I would expect a sturdier sole.
