great for 85% of situations
Weirdly enough I'm from the PNW but didn't own a decent rain jacket so bought this one a few months ago to help with the sometimes daily drizzle of portland/seattle life. Overall great purchase given the price to quality ratio however I do have one complaint. I would classify this jacket as highly water resistant but not waterproof. In almost every situation I have used it in, it has performed admirably. it's size is perfect for stuffing in a pack on a hike and its a great windstopping layer that's light enough that you aren't fermenting in your own sweat for the rest of the day. However, a few nights ago, I was out in the wet (and cold) for several hours in what I would call moderate-heavy rain and the jacket seemed to hit its saturation point. Not only was it soaked through but my sweatshirt underneath was damp all the way through, my baselayer survived however so it wasn't all for naught. The jacket seems to work best when it has the chance to take a breather in between soakings and couldn't hold up to long term rain. Overall I will keep using this jacket and see no need to buy a replacement for now but when this one wears out I'll be looking for a replacement that while on the pricier end strays far away from protective coatings of waterproofing vs actual water proof material. This is a great jacket, but it doesn't cover all of my lifestyle needs.

Not a rain jacket
I bought this 3 days ago and fell inlove with the light and airy feel of it. But once l got home, l read some of the reviews and got concerned wether it would stand a good rain storm as l plan on using it during a hike. I contacted Patagonia and customer service was beyond nice. She called me back after checking with engineering group. They claimed it had passed all waterproofing tests. So still not convinced, l wore the jacket in the shower and stood under my rainfall shower head. Within less than 5 min my shoulder and back was wet. Took it off and inside of the jacket was wet and it's defiantly going back since its NOT doing what l bought it for. Sad because l truly wanted it to work and still need a decent light and breathable rain jacket.

Tight fit

My husband originally bought this style of jacket on Patagonia’s website as a gift for me. We were going to return it when I saw this one for a much better price. However, after trying it on, I’ve decided to go with the full-priced original directly from Patagonia. REI’s was about 2 inches shorter in width around the waist/hips, making it feel way too tight around the hips and hand pockets. It fit but was just too tight. I would only be able to comfortably wear a t-shirt underneath but not a sweatshirt. The rest of the jacket (chest & arms) felt fine. I’m 5’0” 123lb & wear a small in Patagonia clothing, and 26 in jeans

Convenient for England, Ireland, Scotland

Wore throughout England Ireland and Scotland. Conviniently folds into small triangle pouch that is chest pocket. Hood visor a bit too short for strong rain. Wrinkles easily, however wrinkles seem to magically disappear for the most part after awhile of wearing. I did not want to wear or carry a raincoat all Day after day in areas with intermittant daily rain. I would pop the pouch into my purse for entry into museums and tourist attractions. Worked well for my purposes. Also gave a little extra warmth, and pit zips came in handy for rainy warm day walking tours.

So far, so good

I read a lot of reviews of many brands/types of shells before buying this one, and this one really has proven to be great. Its super lightweight, comfortable and stylish, too (LOVE the dark blue color). I tested the jacket out in the snow and rain in the So Cal mountains and was pleasantly surprised by how well it shielded the wind and how it kept me dry.

lightweight jacket

This is a good looking jacket, but it doesn't come close to being waterproof. This jacket was worn only twice before I returned it. I have had water resistant jackets that have performed in the rain better. The second time I wore this jacket in moderate rain, I walked for 25 minutes. By the time I got home, the fabric on the inside of the jacket was wet in the shoulders and upper back. If you are looking for a waterproof jacket, look elsewhere.

Great knee jerk purchase

Bought on a whim at the Seattle store for a trip to the Galapagos Islands. It's lightweight, a little stretchy and the pit zips were great on the plane. One con is the stiff material at the back of the neck is uncomfortable and bugs me, but overall a positive purchase.

Not a rain jacket

Bought this jacket last spring with great hope.. I read the reviews but figured Patagonia would never call something a rain jacket if it was not waterproof.. it is not and has not been since I began wearing it... it does not even keep you dry in a light rain .. don’t buy this as a rain jacket... it does fit well and does work a awndbreaker to,some degree

Cute!

Soft, flattering and repels rain like a champ. I tried on a bunch of spring rain jackets and almost walked out with a different one. This one is the gold standard. I adore it and I look forward to it keeping me dry on hikes and backpacking trips for years to come.

testing, testing

I bought the jacket for backpacking purposes and haven't been able to test it out. Wore it on a wet, rainy morning walk and stayed dry. The jacket is light, and fits like my Patagonia Houdini. I use a size L to accommodate a warmer layer underneath. I'm 5'6" and 145 LB
