I live in NW Montana near Glacier. I bought these boots last November and wore them a lot in the snow during our heavier than usual winter. My feet were always comfortable and dry. This past summer I've done over 60 miles of trail hiking mostly in Glacier National Park. They are lightweight, never caused blisters, and give good ankle support. The only modification I've made is to replace the Vasque insoles with Spenco green insoles. I've crossed mountain runoff streams 2 inches deep and my socks have stayed dry. The Merrell Chameleons I've worn for years were comfortable but not as durable and supportive as these Vasque mid-high boots.
I went to my local REI store and the associate in the boot department spent a solid hour with me. I have a very high instep and depending on the boot cut I am in between sizes as well as in between standard and wide. After much back and forth and trying other boots I selected the Vasque 1/2 size larger than normal and in wide. I broke in the boots over a 2 week period with local street hiking and wearing them on the weekends for the day. Last weekend I hike Mt. Baldy (10,040 ft), an 11 mile hike, about 4800' elevation gain. The Vasque Talus performed incredibly well for me. No hot spots and no blisters. Everyone's feet are different, and what I really recommend is getting properly sized and fitted. For me, this hiking boot will bring many unforgettable hiking adventures.
These boots were amazing! I didn't have time to break them in before my Canadian hiking trip, but you really don't need to. They form great to your foot, are super comfortable. We walked through ice patches, snow, water, hard surfaces and it did great in all textures. My feet were never wet and it was a great waterproof boot. I like the ankle support too! I am a female with a large foot so had to buy a men's show, still looked great and was more narrow than most men's shoes- so didn't feel clunky! I say it runs small- but really for hiking boots they recommend you buy 1/2 to 1 size larger than your true size- I found that to be true and was able to hike comfortably!
I wore these through about 6 hours of heavy snowshoeing and they held up just fine with no leaks! They stand up to water no problem! They also provide tremendous grip on virtually any surface - ice is slippery for every shoe, but these felt more sure-footed than anything else I've tried outside of metal cleats and/or crampons. The soles are also very durable and really grippy. I also owned a pair of LOWA Zephyrs but promptly returned those as I felt the Vasques provided better grip/support and were more durable. They are a little bit toasty, but name a waterproof shoe that isn't... The fact that Red Wing owns and manufactures these boots in the same Minnesota facility as their iconic boots is also a huge selling point for me - you know you're getting top of the line quality.
I have neuropathy in my feet so I'm pretty picky about shoes and boots. These felt fairly good in the store, but I needed to wear them several times before passing judgement. I broke them in on a treadmill a couple of times for an hour each time. Then began hiking and snowshoeing. They have been great. The snowshoe hike last week was late April, so the snow was heavy and wet. These kept my feet dry inside, although the outsides of the boot were wet. I use them with the heavy cushion version of SmartWool hiking socks.
Amazing boots right out of the box. Lost my previous pair of boots and purchased these 2 days before hunting trip, so no break in. Trekked about 10-12 miles a day (3 days) through some very rocky and steep terrain and the boots were fantastic. No blisters, jammed toes or sore ankles. Great balance of support, breathability, grip and comfort. Couldn't be more pleased....will update again on durability after a few months / year of wear.
These hiking boots are awesome. I bought them before going on vacation to Costa Rica. They held up very well even when we went up the Volcanic terrain, facing huge boulders and slippery hillsides. They are comfortable and not tiring. Not the lightest but you feel secure. Slightly pricy, but overall, I’m satisfied with the investment.
I purchased mine in Atlanta, GA in 2016 for a couple of hikes in the Smokies, they were absolutely fantastic. Very comfortable fit and perfect for the type of terrain they were used in at the time. I do however live in the south of Brazil where I own a small ranch in the Atlantic Rainforest, the terrain is extremely rocky, these boots do not hold down in rocky terrain, I would actually go as far as to say that they are downright dangerous, total lack of grip. Unfortunately they have now torn open near the toes, so will have to let them go which is a pity as I have several hikes planned, for less rocky terrain. Recommended for the intended use which is water / grass / mud.
Maybe too soon to rate but has good blend of support vs weight vs comfort. Did a couple 5-mile break-in walks with no problems. Why not 5 stars? Two reasons: 1. Th top of the tongue has no padding and when you cinch the laces tight and then walk uphill or downhill the laces cut into your ankle. Not painful but annoying. Another 1/4 oz of padding would have fixed this. 2. The insole is too thin at the ball of the foot. Having said this, happy with the purchase so far.
Purchased these and wore them for about 3 days to break them in before a 30 mile backpacking trip to Colorado. I had zero problems, blisters or anything. Very comfortable, and the leather helps break them in around your feet. I still wear them all the time on wilderness trails around Texas. It's one of those purchases that I've been very pleased with.
