Plastic cheap parts broke before first trip
This is not REI's fault. They collaborate with OldTown, but Johnson Outdoors (who owns OldTown) is the manufacturer. Long story short, this boat never even made it on to the water without beginning to fall apart. I took delivery from REI, and upon inspecting it before leaving the store it was already in disarray. Johnson Outdoors used plastic rivets to secure the grabhandles at fore and aft, and these plastic rivets had begun to back out of the hull before the boat even left their warehouse. The boat could not even be picked up without the grabhandles wiggling loose from the hull. Unacceptable for a brand new product direct from the manufacturer.
Only one complaint
I've only taken it out a few times but i've also banged it up, had 2 dogs running all over the inside, etc. Holds myself, a friend, and two dogs well. We tried 2 people and 3 dogss and the dogs throw the boat around too much. Only regret is I need help moving it on my own.
Love this Canoe
The husband, me and the fur babies are very comfy out for the day paddling
Saranac's have bad warpage!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Saranac Canoes are made with single layer construction. It more on the flexible/ flimsy side. Especially in hot weather or warm waters. Over short time these canoes warp and don't hold it's shape. The bottoms of the seats are support for holding the floor down. If you have small items on the floor. Stepping down on floor will create a gap under the seat support. Items get lost under there. It's also hard to flush, wash, and clean under these seats. I believe the warpage is the biggest concern. Warped bottoms add more resistance in paddling. I am not a big fan of these models. The Discovery series are much better in holding it's shape. They have 3 layer construction. I will try and attach a photo of a Saranac with warped bottom. Not sure how noticeable the warpage is in photo. Not good at all to store outdoors, especially if sun can get to it. These canoes should be a med gray or some lighter color. Not dark colors!
Great Canoe Purchase
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This canoe has been a great purchase. Its easy to get on and off the car and into the water. The seats are really comfortable and the built in storage is convenient. Once in the water, the canoe is easy to paddle and steer. All in all we couldn't be happier.
great canoe
we had a canoe for many years and it held up better than any of my relationships! fur sure its a blast to ride down the river and see all of the wildlife and calm water. i love to bring along the family while on a trip and just cruise along the river.
Great value, comfortable
I've had this canoe a year now after using an old Guide 160 of about 4-5 years before that. I downsized so it would be easier to launch, recover, and move the boat around in my backyard alone. The Saranac 146 is a lot better in that regard, and I don't feel like I'm losing THAT much space in the boat for what I used it for - fishing, duck hunting (just to get to my spot) and paddling with little kids. I haven't used it on an overnight camping trip but that might be pushing it with two people. On that point, I like how the center console/seat can be popped in and out pretty easily with a screwdriver. The seats and storage and other little options throughout are nice touches. My only complaint is this boat is a lot lighter duty than the old Guide. The hull is much more flimsy and is prone to warp unless you store it exactly how it likes. I haven't had any issues with durability yet, but I busted through some nasty oyster shell beds, rocks, and timber in the Guide and it was never worse for wear. We'll see how this one holds up over the long haul.
Great features...light enough carry it myself.
