Great fit - no over heating - Waterproof
I wore these for a 6 mile hike that rained throughout on varied terrain. Ankle high grass with slush/snow, forested trail with burr containing plants trailside, and then some paved path. It was about 39 degrees so I was a little worried about temperature, but with a synthetic base layer and wool under these I was perfect and stayed dry. The burrs didn't stick either. I wore these into town at a general store as well and while they are very technical they aren't bulky and I didn't feel like I was waddling in snow pants through the aisles. Very happy with this pants performance and on wet or snowy days I'll be sure to grab them again.
A must have!
Beside my Theta jacket, this is my best friend. It is a very well designed product and works perfectly. Been using it for 8 years now and I am very pleased with the product. The long zippers in the legs makes it easy to pull the pants on and off. They are breathing well and even is hot weather is it possible to wear them. The fit is very good and the inserts on the inside prevents wear and tear. Friends of mine using cheaper products are complaining about getting wet and cold due to their pants lack of breathing capabilities. The Beta AR pants are so good I often forget I am wearing them, I just dont want to take them off. Highly recommended! Tom
Looking good so far
Used these pants for the first time on a skiing holiday. Love the design, the look and the 3/4 length zippers which make it very easy to wear it over ski boots. Did not feel restricted during skiing at all. It feels really durable as well. However, when walking I noticed that the crotch part is somewhat under tension with every step I took. This made me wonder about the durability of that specific part of the pants. When walking up a hill this became slightly more obvious, as I somewhat felt limited in movement. Have not used it for a proper hike trip yet, but intend to do so in the future. Hopefully it will be durable enough to deal with this.
Great
I needed functional clothes for a trip to Iceland straddling winter and spring. The weather was certain to be unpredictable. Mid day through my first day (of 14) I put the Beta AR pants on and they never came off for the rest of the trip. I was trudging through snow, climbing lava rock, crossing rivers and climbing waterfalls. These pants are everything I hoped they would be. To stay warm I wore one base layer of long underwear underneath and that was plenty. When I first saw these pants, I scoffed at the price, but I'm glad I took the plunge. Cold conditions are nothing to mess around with and misery can ruin a trip. After washing them once (I followed the web site directions) they look as good as new. On another note, I am 6'3" and I bought the tall size.
Used these on three trips this year
I day hiked in intense rain, wind and 40 degree temps in the pants and was completely comfortable. Very solid feeling. Then I backpacked for 6 days in the Wind River Range and lived in them except for sleeping. Again, cold rain and 45 mph provided a good test - no problems. Finally, some hotter than expected days in the Himalayas this past week (mid-70's) and all I did was vent the legs about 8" with the side zips. I wouldn't want to wear them above 80 degrees, but other than that, I'd wear them any time. These are great pants. I've amortized the cost down to $20 per day already - the rest is gravy! Get a pair. Jeff
Very well made pants but had to downsize
I purchased these pants at SAIL two weeks ago and they are awesome. I worn it for snowshoeing and hiking. I even experienced light rain with it and they are really waterproof and windproof. Keep you warm and confortable with a good base layer underneath. You can feel they are well made and strong. Very compactable too. However, be carefull with the sizes. I was planning to order the pants online but finally went in store to try them due to the previous reviews mentionning issues regarding the sizes. I usually wear medium on Arc'teryx gear but after trying them, i bought a small, medium was way too big. I'm 5'11, 175lbs. Beside the size issue, they are bombproof pants.
Best fitting outdoor pants yet
While I am primarily a lift skier, I wanted a trimmer-fitting, minimalistic all-around set of shell pants and am very happy with my Beta AR in XXL Short. These fit true to my other brands without the excess bulk of most modern skiwear designs, I don't feel like a thug with my pants down around my thighs. The fit and the craftsmanship - especially the seams - is superior to any of the other top tier brands I've tried. In fact I sold my Patagonia stuff the week after I got this without any regrets, this is pant that does it all, full three-seasons. And I have been a Patagonia zealot since the late 70s.... The cuffs and internal gaiters are especially nice, the fit everything from bulky race boots to my low hiking boots. Be aware the heavier Goretex is not going to be as quiet as a soft-shell but it is more bulletproof. I was out in semi-freezing rain today and was perfectly comfortable with one layer of SV thermals and an Atom insulator jacket.
Didn't suffer a scratch
Last Friday I was riding my racebike through very heavy rain, wearing my Beta AR jacket and pants. Out of nowhere there was a fallen tree laying accross the road about 1 meter from the ground. I didn't stand a chance, I tried to duck underneath it. I hit the tree very hard with my head and shoulder. Next thing I know is that I'm lying on the gravel road on the other side of the tree. The saddle of my bike was broken, I had torn a tendon in my ankle and shoulder. But the jacket and pants didn't even have a scratch! I was really amazed by it. It was a rough tree and a rough gravel road. But apart of some mud there was no evidence on them that I had crashed. Really amazing how tough the fabric is!
These pants can take a beating
Had a chance to test out Beta AR pants in several different conditions in the Oregon area. First trial was in the Columbia River Gorge on a day with non-stop rain and temperatures in the lower 40's, next on Mt. Hood in freezing conditions, then on the Oregon Coast Range with light rain, high winds, and temps in the low 50's. The pants performed great in all conditions. I really like the construction, the articulated knees allow for a great freedom of movement and the reinforced areas around the seat, knees, and instep really allow these pants to stand up to hard wear. I never felt like I was overheating when making an effort, mostly due to side zippers that allow great ventilation. Great pants, highly recommend.
One Arrow In Your Quiver
I bought this pair of pants over 10 years ago and they are still going strong! When I bought them I needed something that I could use year round for a variety of different activities, and could only afford one pair of pants. With a built in gaitor these pants are a do-all piece. In warmer temps you are able to wear these with a pair of shorts or hiking pants, and for winter skiing / mountaineering all that you will need is a medium / heavyweight baselayer. Water repellent, breathable, and durable. If you have one arrow in your quiver, these are the pants to get.
