Great fork mount roof rack!!
I compared every fork mount roof rack I could find looking for one that would fit my Trek Slash (Enduro MTB) with a 50 inch wheelbase. The Kuat Trio was the only one I could find that went up to 50 inches (length). The rack works perfectly! It’s super sturdy for a simple design and comes with some decent security features when you leave your bike for the post shred brew. Security cable that you can wrap through the rear wheel and frame & proprietary bolts for mounting the rack that require a proprietary tool (included). Really well thought out rack that accommodates pretty much any bike. They also provide a few different mounts for different size axels. I have a small car as well, Volvo XC 40. It just fits without interfering with the hatch when open. I really dig this rack! Kuat stuff looks cool too.
Solid, stable, sleek. Highly recommend
Reviews on this mount were mixed, but I felt good enough to buy it. I have used it a few times now, and I felt compelled to express my positive opinions on it. I mounted it to Thule aero bars. I was replacing a wheel-on mount that grabbed the downtube. I wanted something that didn't need to grab the carbon frame, and something that was stable at highway speeds. The Kuat Trio is sleek looking, feels very sturdy, mounts up tightly onto the aero bars, holds the bike very firmly and stable, and has neat features like the wheel and frame lock. This is my first fork mount, and I am very impressed with it. I highly recommend it. (Note I am mounting a carbon road bike with 9x100 QR wheels. I also purchased front wheel mount separately for drives when the car is loaded up with family stuff and no room for the front wheel in the cabin.)
This rack is excellent
Typical REI reviews - only the people with problems bother to write in. I’ve had this on my roof for 5 years, without a problem. One of the bad reviews is because it’s too big for your roof? (Really they have a fitting guide). The other one is because the bike fell off the roof. While I can’t comment on Yakima or Thule roof racks, I can attest that this is a quality product if you take the time to ensure it fits your needs and use it properly.
Additional adapters required for road bikes
This rack is extremely well built, low profile, and looks good even without a bike on it. One this you should be aware is that the included axle adapters do not work with the unofficial road/gravel bike standard of 100x12 and require the purchase of an additional adapter. While its only a few bucks extra, they are not offered by REI, and are backordered for nearly a year direct from Kuat. Not a deal breaker if you dont have a bike that needs this standard but if you do, its worth knowing.
Beautiful Rack But Interferes with Rear Hatch
Beautiful, sturdy rack that is pretty simple to install. However, the length interferes with the rear hatch of my vehicle (5th Gen Honda CRV, 2017-2022). It can be mounted backwards (i.e. fork mount at the back of the vehicle and wheel strap at front) but I’m concerned about the force that would put on the rear strap, the moment force it would cause at the front fork, and overall stability. I’ll be returning this for a comparable rack (approx. 3 inches shorter) from a competitor. For what it’s worth, I have another Kuat product (NV 1.0) and love it.
Caution! Great rack, if it fits on your car...
Most roof racks are not good looking. They have extra bars, or sit up high, or have a dated look, or seem to be made to lowest cost. These roof racks are great. They are low profile, high quality construction. I was excited to find them, though curious as to why they are not more widely reviewed. After finally picking them up from the store during covid (an entirely different challenge) I got them home, to be installed on a compact Audi A3. The Kuat Trio has a floating rear mounting point and a fixed front mounting point. For smaller hatchbacks, this results in the rack preventing the trunk hatch from being able to open. The photos shows the clash, with the rack about 10" beyond where the hatch opens. in the photo I have angled the rack to stick off the side of the car. Very disappointing that the rack does not allow for adjustments. The length of the rack was easily much longer than necessary for any of my bikes. Ultimately, I'll have no choice but to return these. I'd still recommend these to those with larger cars, but be sure they fit. The integrated security is a great feature. For those with concerns about the attachment, the front is attached with pentagonal bolts, meaning a traditional hex key set won't work. It's a subtle but effective security solution. The built in cable lock is high quality and would provide decent theft deterrence. I have since found an alternative rack that looks similar, but both the front and rear attachments are adjustable. The alternative is absolutely a step down in both quality and security, for only a minor cost savings. I am disappointed the Kuat rack has not been designed to allow for a wider range of cars. If feels like a major oversight, given the number of smaller hatchbacks.
Simple rack, fits outback stock racks
Can confirm - it fits on stock 2018 outback roof rack without interfering with the opening of the rear hatch. I needed something slim to fit next to my rooftop box and this was the only rack that fit the bill. I was a little worried about getting my bike up there, only 5'3" tall but I somehow make it work.
Kuat Roof Rack Great but…..
Nice quality, easy to install, holds bike securely. Only issue is that its length impedes the lift-gate on my small SUV from fully opening, but that appears to be an issue with all the roof mounted racks from most manufacturers.
A decent roof rack. Not perfect by a long shot.
I installed two Kurt Trio racks on my station wagon recently and so far the process has been mixed. The racks come out of the box with everything you need to install them on the car. The install was easy. The rack comes with a series of pretty bulky adaptors that don’t include a 12x100 which is pretty much what every road/ gravel bike has come with for the last 5 years so I ordered that straight from Kuat, which was very easy and they were super helpful. The main isssue with the adapters is they are not labeled so you need to make double sure the adapter works before you put a bike up there and have it possibly drop the fork legs onto the roof of the car or through the sunroof. Kuat really needs to label the adapters. I labeled my own so it’s easier now but it really should be done from the factory. You need to be careful when loading the bike because fixing the fork to the rack can be touchy.
Very Happy
I have come to really like Kuat products (function, style and affordable). The Trio is no exception….it’s solid, easy to operate and looks great on my hatchback.
